Spoiler warning: This is a full-spoiler recap of Squid Game season 2, episode 7, including the failed rebellion, Player 001’s identity, Jung-bae’s death and the mid-credits scene.
The season finale ends with Gi-hun’s armed uprising crushed from within. Young-il, the ally known as Player 001, is revealed as Front Man Hwang In-ho, who kills Jung-bae and leaves Gi-hun broken while the game continues.
How Gi-hun’s revolt begins
After failing to persuade enough contestants to vote their way out of the games, Gi-hun and his allies choose a more dangerous strategy: an armed revolt against the guards and the people running the competition. They seize weapons and initially make progress, creating the impression that the players might actually break through the game’s security.
The plan depends on coordination, trust and the belief that the guards can be overwhelmed. Those assumptions collapse because the Front Man is already inside the group, posing as Player 001 under the name Young-il.

Player 001 is really the Front Man
Young-il’s apparent partnership with Gi-hun is a deception. He is Hwang In-ho, the Front Man, who has returned to the game disguised as a contestant. During the uprising, he kills two rebels, stages Young-il’s death and then switches to the guards’ radio frequency. From that position he helps the security forces identify and defeat the remaining players.
The reveal reverses the trust built between Gi-hun and Player 001. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk describes the season as beginning with the Front Man’s mask off and ending with it back on: the disguise briefly allows In-ho to act like a fellow player before he resumes control of the system.
Why the rebellion fails
Front Man’s position inside the group
The revolt is not defeated only by superior security. It is sabotaged by someone who knows the players’ plans, understands the guards’ response and can move between both sides. In-ho turns the rebels’ reliance on Young-il into a tactical weakness.

Gi-hun’s second failed strategy
Gi-hun has now tried two ways to end the games. Voting did not convince enough players to leave, and force cannot defeat the organizers. The finale therefore closes off both his political and military solutions without resolving the larger conflict.

Once the uprising is broken, Gi-hun and Jung-bae surrender. Front Man puts on his black mask and cloak again, confirming to the audience that the apparently helpful Young-il was In-ho all along. He then shoots Jung-bae in front of Gi-hun and walks away, leaving Gi-hun screaming over his friend’s body.
Jung-bae’s death is more than a battlefield casualty. Hwang Dong-hyuk says Jung-bae represents the optimism and warm heart Gi-hun once possessed, and that he is the one person in the games Gi-hun can fully trust. Killing him attacks Gi-hun’s moral center as well as his attempt to organize resistance. Actor Lee Jung-jae frames the aftermath around a single question: how much pain can a person endure while pursuing a goal?

Does Gi-hun know Young-il is Front Man?
No. Gi-hun does not understand that Young-il betrayed him or that Young-il is the Front Man. He is consumed by self-blame after the revolt fails and Jung-bae is killed. The audience receives the identity reveal, but Gi-hun is left without that explanation, which makes his grief and confusion more severe.

The finale places Gi-hun at a moral crossroads. He still wants to believe that people can act together and leave the game, but every attempt has ended in failure. In-ho represents the opposite conclusion: that the system is permanent and that hope only makes people easier to control.

Season 2 ends before Gi-hun chooses between those positions. He could continue trying to persuade contestants to resist collectively, or the accumulated losses could push him toward the Front Man’s belief that change is impossible. Jung-bae’s death is designed to make that choice personal rather than abstract.

What the mid-credits scene shows
The mid-credits image shows three players walking, the giant doll Young-hee, a mysterious boy doll and a green light. It does not explain the boy doll’s identity or provide a complete new game, but it signals that the contest and its imagery will continue into the next chapter. The scene functions as a direct bridge toward season 3 rather than a resolution of Gi-hun’s defeat.
