Apple TV was not waiting until 2026 to support lossless music. Apple TV 4K has offered standard Apple Music Lossless (up to 24-bit/48 kHz) for years. The important change announced for tvOS 27 is Hi-Res Lossless: playback above 48 kHz, potentially up to 24-bit/192 kHz. That upgrade makes Apple TV 4K a more capable Apple Music endpoint, but it does not turn the video-first box into a straightforward, bit-perfect audiophile streamer.
Availability depends on the final tvOS 27 release, Apple’s regional rollout and the particular Apple TV model. Apple’s support documentation has also continued to describe a 48 kHz ceiling, so treat Hi-Res Lossless as announced or rolling out until your own Apple TV and receiver confirm otherwise.
Lossless and Hi-Res Lossless are different tiers
Apple Music uses Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC), which preserves the encoded source data instead of discarding information as a lossy codec does. Apple describes most of its catalog as available from CD quality through 24-bit/192 kHz. The labels mean different things:
| Apple Music label | Resolution | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Lossless | Up to 24-bit/48 kHz | Standard high-quality ALAC playback, already supported on Apple TV 4K. |
| Hi-Res Lossless | Above 48 kHz, up to 24-bit/192 kHz | The higher-resolution tier announced for tvOS 27; compatible hardware and an appropriate output path are required. |
A lossless file can still contain a poor master. ALAC preserves what Apple supplied; it cannot improve clipped dynamics, an aggressive mix or a recording that was never made at high resolution. Apple’s terminology and catalog details are documented in Apple’s lossless-audio guide and its Apple Music service information.

What Apple actually changed on Apple TV
Apple’s 2022 Apple TV 4K announcement already listed lossless Apple Music playback, so “Apple TV finally supports lossless” is misleading. The new development is the higher-resolution tier in tvOS 27, announced by Apple in June 2026 as part of upcoming software. It is primarily a software change, although the result depends on the Apple TV generation, tvOS build, HDMI chain, receiver or DAC and the speakers downstream.
Do not assume that every HDMI-equipped Apple TV receives Hi-Res Lossless. Apple’s final compatibility list should be the authority for Apple TV 4K generations, Apple TV HD exclusions, stable releases and beta builds. A feature visible in a developer or public beta is not proof of a finished, universal rollout. The announcement is described in Apple’s June 2026 newsroom release, while the support page may lag or retain the older 48 kHz wording during the transition.
How to enable and verify the higher-resolution path
For standard Lossless, Apple’s documented Apple TV 4K route is:

Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Play a track explicitly marked Hi-Res Lossless.
- Read the incoming sample-rate display on the receiver or DAC. A genuine negotiated high-rate output may show 88.2, 96, 176.4 or 192 kHz.
- Play a standard Lossless track separately and record what the equipment reports.
- Test a Dolby Atmos track separately; Atmos and stereo high-resolution playback are different formats.
- Repeat the checks with Atmos enabled and disabled if your system exposes that choice.
A receiver showing 192 kHz proves the negotiated output rate, not that the source was a native 192 kHz master or that no conversion, volume processing or channel remapping occurred. Apple documents supported resolutions and connections, but does not promise a universal bit-perfect mode.
The physical connection is the real catch
Home-theater system: Apple’s straightforward example
Apple TV 4K ↓ HDMI AV receiver or compatible soundbar ↓ Amplifier and speakers
This is the least complicated arrangement. The receiver handles HDMI audio and drives the speakers. Apple specifically recommends an HDMI connection to an AV receiver for lossless Apple TV playback.

Stereo system with an HDMI-capable DAC
Apple TV 4K ↓ HDMI DAC with compatible HDMI audio input ↓ analog RCA/XLR Integrated amplifier or preamp ↓ Passive speakers
This can be elegant, but HDMI inputs are uncommon on traditional two-channel DACs. Many audiophile DACs instead accept USB, optical, coaxial or AES/EBU.
Stereo system using an HDMI extractor
Apple TV 4K ↓ HDMI HDMI audio extractor ├─ HDMI video → TV └─ optical/coaxial/other audio → DAC or amplifier
An extractor can bridge the incompatibility, but it becomes part of the signal chain. Before buying one, check its maximum PCM sample rate, stereo support, EDID handling, HDCP compatibility, HDR and Dolby Vision pass-through, output type and whether it downsamples. Cheap or poorly specified units can produce handshake failures or lose lock whenever the sample rate changes.

Apple TV 4K’s relevant external connection is HDMI; Apple’s product information does not provide the simple optical or coaxial output found on many dedicated streamers. Its current store page specifies HDMI as the connection (the cable is sold separately): Apple TV 4K.

Why audiophiles remain frustrated
HDMI does not fit every two-channel system
Someone with a USB-only DAC, optical-input amplifier or coaxial DAC cannot simply plug Apple TV into it. The choices are an AVR, an HDMI audio interface, an extractor or another source device. That is extra hardware and another point where video standards and audio settings can interfere.
Lossless decoding is not the same as bit-perfect transport
Apple TV may decode Apple Music content internally and send PCM over HDMI. PCM is a normal digital-audio format, but listeners seeking a transparent transport may also require automatic sample-rate switching, no resampling, no volume alteration, no channel remapping and direct control of an external DAC’s clock. Public Apple documentation establishes supported rates and HDMI use, not those stronger guarantees. Enthusiast reports about a particular tvOS build or receiver should not be generalized to every combination.
Atmos is an alternative mix, not a resolution badge
Apple TV 4K can deliver Dolby Atmos through compatible televisions, soundbars, AV receivers and HomePods, as explained in Apple’s Atmos support guide. A stereo Hi-Res Lossless file and an immersive Atmos mix are different listening options. The Atmos master may be the preferred version even when the stereo file carries the higher-resolution label. A larger number does not automatically mean better sound.

AirPlay is a separate route
Playing music directly in the Apple Music app on Apple TV is not the same as sending it from an iPhone, iPad or Mac with AirPlay, nor is it the same as sending audio to HomePods or another AirPlay speaker. Do not assume that every AirPlay destination preserves 24-bit/192 kHz merely because the source track is marked Hi-Res Lossless. AirPlay behavior depends on the route and destination; Apple’s developer documentation describes the technology but does not establish a blanket Hi-Res Lossless guarantee: Supporting AirPlay in your app.
Televisions and older receivers can alter the result
If Apple TV is connected to the television first, the TV may limit or modify audio pass-through. An older receiver may also mishandle HDMI handshakes, 4K video, HDR or changing PCM rates. For Atmos setups, Apple recommends connecting Apple TV directly to a compatible soundbar or AV receiver when necessary.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Hi-Res Lossless worth pursuing?
It is sensible when
- You already own a resolving, wired stereo system.
- The Hi-Res version is a genuinely different or better master.
- Your receiver, HDMI DAC or carefully specified extractor accepts the required signal.
- You want one box for television, movies, Apple Music and Apple-home features.
- Convenience and ecosystem integration matter alongside transport purity.
Extra equipment is probably unnecessary when
- You mainly use built-in TV speakers or Bluetooth headphones.
- You cannot hear a reliable difference in a level-matched comparison.
- An extractor would cost close to a dedicated streamer.
- You primarily prefer Dolby Atmos mixes.
- Your speakers, room or amplifier are the dominant limits.
Apple says the difference between AAC and lossless can be virtually indistinguishable. That is Apple’s position, not a universal finding. In practice, mastering quality, speaker placement, room acoustics and accurate volume matching generally matter more than a resolution badge.
Choosing the right source for your system
| Source | Best fit | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|
| Apple TV 4K | Living-room users wanting TV, movies, Apple Music, AirPlay and smart-home integration through HDMI. | Video-first design, HDMI dependence and no guaranteed bit-perfect, sample-rate-transparent mode. |
| iPhone or iPad plus external DAC | Private listening, headphones, powered speakers or a USB-DAC stereo system; Apple documents this route for playback above 48 kHz. | Less convenient as a television-centered source; a suitable DAC and wired connection are required. |
| Mac plus DAC | Desktop systems needing more control over output format and sample rate. | Requires macOS setup and is less remote-friendly in a living room. |
| Dedicated network streamer | Listeners prioritizing optical, coaxial, USB, AES/EBU or balanced analog outputs and two-channel control. | Another device and ecosystem, with less Apple TV convenience; a higher price does not automatically mean better sound. |
| HomePod or soundbar | Simple, integrated Apple listening with minimal wiring. | Not a conventional external-DAC or upgradeable two-channel path. |
Practical failure checks
- No high-rate indication: Confirm the track is labeled Hi-Res Lossless, update tvOS, inspect the receiver’s input mode and test a direct HDMI connection.
- Audio drops or locks intermittently: Check HDMI cables, EDID behavior and extractor specifications; older AVRs may be the limiting device.
- Only optical output is available: Use an extractor that explicitly supports the desired stereo PCM rate, or choose an iPhone, iPad, Mac or streamer with a native compatible output.
- Atmos plays but stereo Hi-Res does not behave as expected: Test the two formats separately and check which output and sound-mode settings the receiver is applying.
- Downloaded files sound unchanged after enabling Lossless: Higher-quality settings can require deleting and redownloading existing downloads; lossless files also use more storage. See Apple’s download guidance.
- Bluetooth headphones are connected: Bluetooth is not the route for obtaining the full wired Hi-Res Lossless signal.
The bottom line for Apple TV owners
tvOS 27’s announced Hi-Res Lossless support is a meaningful upgrade over Apple TV 4K’s former 24-bit/48 kHz ceiling, provided your model receives the final software and your HDMI chain negotiates the higher rate. It does not add optical, coaxial or USB audio, guarantee bit-perfect transport or remove the trade-offs between stereo and Atmos. Use Apple TV 4K when you want an Apple-centered entertainment hub and already have HDMI-compatible audio. Choose an iPhone, iPad or Mac with a DAC for a simpler wired high-resolution route, or a dedicated network streamer when two-channel connectivity and control matter more than television integration.
