The movie described as “coming to Prime Video this week” is Crime 101. That wording referred to its April 1, 2026 release; as of August 18, 2026, the Chris Hemsworth crime thriller is already streaming on Prime Video.
How to watch Crime 101
Amazon says Crime 101 streams exclusively on Prime Video worldwide and is included with a Prime membership, so members do not pay a separate rental or purchase fee. The film opened in theaters on February 13, 2026, then moved to streaming on April 1— a reported 47-day theatrical-to-streaming window. The “this week” framing was therefore accurate only in late March 2026.
What the film is about
Hemsworth plays an elusive jewel thief whose meticulously planned robberies follow Los Angeles’ Highway 101. When he pursues a score that could change his life, his plans intersect with an insurance broker played by Halle Berry. Mark Ruffalo is the detective trying to identify and stop him.

That setup makes Crime 101 a heist and crime thriller rather than a conventional action movie. Its appeal is the cat-and-mouse structure, criminal planning, noir atmosphere and the shifting pressure among thief, insurance professional and investigator. The article’s premise is drawn from Don Winslow’s fictional 2020 novella Crime 101; it is not based on a true story.
Cast and creative team
Bart Layton wrote and directed the adaptation. The principal cast includes:
Rank #2
- Mystery 101: When a college student is found dead, English professor Amy uses her crime fiction expertise to unravel the case faster than detective Travis, who ends up working with Amy to catch the killer.
- Playing Dead: The local theater is producing a mystery that crime fiction expert Amy unearthed. When one of the actress' life is threatened, Amy & Travis must uncover which character is playing for keeps.
- Words Can Kill: When a guest at the college book festival is killed, Amy and Travis clash after he arrests an unlikely person for murder. Amy must fight to prove he's got the wrong person behind bars.
- Dead Talk: Amy heads to the big city to give an address as part of a TEDTalk-style lecture series. When one of her fellow speakers, a genius inventor, is killed in a freak accident, Amy suspects foul play. But the local cops shut her out of the investigation so she calls upon Travis to help.
- An Education in Murder: A young writer's research prompts the police to revisit a famous murder case that convicted Amy's colleague at Elmstead, so Travis & Amy get a second chance at clearing the professor's name.
- Chris Hemsworth
- Halle Berry
- Mark Ruffalo
- Barry Keoghan
- Monica Barbaro
- Corey Hawkins
- Jennifer Jason Leigh
- Nick Nolte
Hemsworth and Ruffalo reunite outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time in a non-MCU film together. Hemsworth is the criminal and Ruffalo the investigator; no Marvel characters appear in Crime 101. Berry and Keoghan add further franchise familiarity, but the movie stands on its own as an adult crime drama.
What the reported $90 million budget means
Coverage reported a net production cost of about $90 million before marketing. “Net production cost” is not necessarily the final all-in expenditure, since marketing, financing, distribution and other expenses may be separate.
Rank #3
- Factory sealed DVD
| Measure | Reported figure | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Net production cost | Approximately $90 million | Reported production figure before marketing; not an audited total cost |
| U.S. theatrical gross | Approximately $36.4 million | Box-office receipts from domestic theaters |
| Worldwide theatrical gross | Approximately $71.7 million | Global box-office receipts, not the studio’s net revenue |
The worldwide gross was below the reported production figure, so the film underperformed theatrically relative to its budget. That comparison does not prove a specific profit or loss: theaters retain part of ticket revenue, and a complete calculation would require the studio’s marketing, distribution, financing and participation costs.

Critical response versus box office
A March 2026 report cited an 89% critics’ score and an 85% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Those percentages can change as the site adds or reweights reviews, so treat them as a snapshot rather than a permanent rating.
The available picture is therefore mixed in a useful way: critical and audience indicators were broadly positive, while the theatrical run did not cover the reported production figure on a gross-to-budget comparison. A weaker cinema performance does not automatically mean the film is poorly made, and streaming interest should not be treated as a permanent chart achievement because Prime Video rankings vary by country and date.

Who is likely to enjoy it?
Crime 101 is a strong fit if you like:
- Adult heist films and carefully planned robberies
- Los Angeles crime stories with a noir tone
- Slower, character-focused cat-and-mouse thrillers
- Star-driven ensemble casts
- Seeing Hemsworth in a role unrelated to the MCU
- The Hemsworth–Ruffalo pairing without superhero mythology
It may be a poor match if you want nonstop spectacle or a family-friendly adventure. The film is rated R in the United States; check the maturity rating and parental controls on your regional Prime Video listing before watching with younger viewers.
Is Crime 101 worth watching on Prime Video?
For viewers already subscribed to Prime, the film’s inclusion removes the need for a separate rental decision. Its polished cast, Don Winslow source material and high-stakes heist premise make it a sensible choice for a crime-thriller night, especially if you prefer tension and investigation to superhero-scale action. The most accurate description is not “a $90 million flop,” but a well-reviewed adult crime movie whose expensive theatrical gamble underperformed and is now available to a much larger streaming audience.
Release-date correction
Crime 101 is not still upcoming. It arrived on Prime Video on April 1, 2026, and is already available as of August 18, 2026. For additional release details, see ComingSoon’s report.
