Yes—but the headline refers to Google’s April 25, 2025 restoration, not a new August 2026 announcement. Google TV’s redesigned Freeplay guide, first introduced in September 2024, was withdrawn after Google found a problem that could increase crashes for some users. The redesigned experience later reappeared on non-Streamer devices, including a Chromecast with Google TV 4K and Hisense televisions tested by 9to5Google.
Freeplay is an integrated Google TV experience rather than a conventional standalone app you must download from Google Play.
What happened to Google TV Freeplay?
Google began rolling out a redesigned Freeplay interface in September 2024. The update replaced the limited one-channel-at-a-time experience with a fuller guide and easier browsing. By late October, many devices had reverted to the older interface or lost the new guide.
On November 1, 2024, Google said it had disabled the updated guide after discovering an issue that could increase crashes for some users. Google described the change as temporary and said the guide would return to Google TV devices after a fix. The April 25, 2025 report from 9to5Google documented the redesigned experience back on several non-Streamer devices.

Google did not publish a precise restoration date, complete model list or detailed public changelog. The return indicates a later rollout after the rollback; it does not prove that every Google TV model received the update at the same time.
What the redesigned Freeplay experience changed
The redesign made Google’s free, ad-supported television easier to browse instead of treating it like a single stream of channels.
- Full channel guide: See more channels at once and move between them faster.
- Categories and genres: Browse programming by type, although category names can change with later interface updates.
- Recently watched: Return to channels you viewed recently.
- Popular channels: Find commonly viewed options without scrolling through the entire lineup.
- Favorites: Select a channel in the guide and mark it for quicker access.
These are navigation improvements, not a promise of a fixed channel lineup. Freeplay programming, advertising and availability can change.

Which devices received it?
The April 2025 report specifically confirmed the redesigned experience on a Chromecast with Google TV 4K and at least two Hisense Google TV televisions. The Google TV Streamer had retained the redesigned experience during the rollback testing described in November 2024.
That evidence is narrower than a complete compatibility list. Google TV software can roll out by model, manufacturer, firmware build, market and server-side account setting. A Sony, TCL or Hisense television may support Google TV yet still show a different Freeplay layout or receive it later. Google’s earlier statement expressed an intention to bring the guide to all Google TV devices, not a guarantee that every model updated simultaneously.
Is Freeplay available outside the United States?
Google’s support documentation identifies Freeplay live television as available in the United States, subject to availability. Google TV itself is sold in multiple markets, but that does not mean the built-in Freeplay service is available everywhere.

Outside the United States, you may see a different Live tab, local partner services or no Freeplay option. Pluto TV, Tubi, Plex and similar services are separate products even when Google TV surfaces some partner channels in its Live interface.
How to find Freeplay
Google’s Google TV product page says Freeplay can be opened from the Your apps row or the Live tab. Exact labels vary by device and software rollout. Depending on the interface, the shortcut may be called Freeplay, Free channels or appear only inside Live.

- Confirm the platform: Make sure the television or streamer is running Google TV, not an older standard Android TV interface.
- Check location: Freeplay live TV is primarily a U.S. feature.
- Restart the device: Use the normal restart command in the device’s power menu.
- Update Google TV apps: Open Google Play Store, select the profile icon, choose Manage apps & games, then Updates or Update all.
- Install a system update: Open Settings → System → About → System update.
- Look again: Check the home screen, Your apps row and Live tab.
- Power-cycle a frozen device: Disconnect power for one minute, reconnect it and wait for Google TV to restart. Google documents restart guidance for Chromecast devices at support.google.com/chromecast/answer/6292664.
A missing redesign can simply mean that the device, region or account has not received the relevant rollout. Clearing app data or resetting the device cannot force a server-side feature release. A factory reset erases installed apps and device data, so reserve it for persistent failures after less destructive steps; Google’s general troubleshooting guidance is at support.google.com/googletv/answer/12360626.
Freeplay in 2026: related, but not the same story
Freeplay has continued to expand beyond the 2024–25 navigation redesign. August 2026 coverage from Android Central and TechRadar described a much larger free on-demand catalog. Those reports concern content volume, not the April 2025 restoration of the guide, and catalog counts can change.
Freeplay versus other free streaming services
Freeplay’s main advantage is placement: it is built into Google TV and requires no separate download or subscription for the built-in service. It is ad-supported and tied to Google’s interface.

- Pluto TV is a separate free, ad-supported app with its own channels and guide.
- Tubi emphasizes free on-demand viewing through a separate app.
- Plex combines free streaming with optional personal-media management, but requires more setup.
Buying a new device is not required merely to obtain the redesign. The Google TV Streamer may be useful if you need new hardware, but an existing supported Google TV television or Chromecast can receive the experience through software. Model, firmware and regional support still determine what appears.
