YouTube’s Stable volume feature reached Android TV and Google TV devices in June 2024. It reduces abrupt loudness changes between quiet and loud parts of supported videos, but it is not available in every playback context and is not a replacement for your television’s own volume controls.
What Stable volume does
Stable volume is YouTube’s playback-level loudness processing. It continually reduces the perceived gap between quieter and louder passages, so you are less likely to reach for the remote when a video suddenly becomes loud or a new video starts much quieter than the previous one.
It does not set your television’s volume, promise identical loudness for every video, or comply with a specified broadcast loudness target. It also cannot repair clipping, distortion, poor microphones, missing dialogue or an inherently quiet upload.
YouTube describes the feature as reducing variation between quiet and loud ranges. Its official explanation is available at YouTube Help.

When it arrived on Android TV and Google TV
YouTube began expanding Stable volume to Android TV and Google TV on June 24, 2024. Reports linked some sightings to YouTube app version 4.40.303, but that build should not be treated as a universal minimum requirement or compatibility guarantee. Coverage of the rollout appeared at 9to5Google and Android Authority.
Availability depends on the device, installed YouTube app, account rollout and the video being played. The feature is not a new 2026 launch, and “now receiving” headlines describe the 2024 rollout rather than a current universal update.
How to find or disable Stable volume
- Open a video in the YouTube app on your Android TV or Google TV device.
- Press the remote’s Select or OK button to show the playback controls.
- Open the Settings gear in the video player.
- Find Stable Volume.
- Toggle it off, or uncheck it, to compare playback without YouTube’s processing.
Labels and placement can vary by YouTube app build, television manufacturer, region and rollout state. YouTube documents the television control path on its support page.

Is it on by default?
YouTube says Stable volume is enabled by default when supported YouTube playback includes the feature. That does not mean every device, video or player will expose a switch. A missing option may indicate unsupported content, an incomplete rollout, a different app interface or an excluded playback context.

- Stable volume is not available for all videos.
- YouTube says it is turned off for YouTube Music and official music videos.
For that reason, test the setting on several ordinary creator-uploaded videos before concluding that the app or television does not support it.
Stable volume is not the same as other audio controls

LG, Samsung, Sony, soundbars and AV receivers use different names for their own processing. If several automatic modes are active, their combined result can be difficult to predict. For a useful comparison, temporarily disable the television or soundbar’s leveling or night mode, then compare Stable volume on and off.

Stable volume and Voice boost
These features address different problems. Stable volume targets swings between quiet and loud playback. Voice boost is intended to make speech easier to hear by emphasizing vocals and reducing background sound.
YouTube says enabling Voice boost automatically turns Stable volume off. If Stable volume appears to disappear after selecting Voice boost, that behavior is expected. Voice boost is the more relevant option when the main complaint is unclear dialogue rather than sudden changes in overall loudness. Details are listed in YouTube’s help documentation.

What you may notice in practice
Reasons to leave it enabled
- Mixed creator videos regularly jump from quiet speech to loud effects.
- You watch casual, dialogue-heavy content and want fewer remote adjustments.
- Your television’s own leveling controls are limited or ineffective.
Reasons to turn it off
- Films, music or ambience sound flattened compared with the original mix.
- You want to preserve deliberate contrasts between quiet and loud scenes.
- Your TV, soundbar or receiver already applies loudness normalization or dynamic-range compression.
- You prefer Voice boost for dialogue.
Those are processing trade-offs and listener preferences, not evidence that Stable volume universally damages audio quality.

A reliable way to test it
- Choose a section of a video that moves from quiet speech to loud effects.
- Listen with Stable volume on while leaving the TV or soundbar settings unchanged.
- Replay the same section with Stable volume off.
- Repeat the comparison with a second video whose dialogue is quiet and effects are prominent.
Keeping the device-level settings unchanged helps separate YouTube’s processing from the television or sound system’s processing.

The toggle does not appear
Try several non-music videos. The current video may not support Stable volume, the feature may not have reached the device or account, or the app may present a different interface. Reinstalling the app, clearing its cache or sideloading a particular APK is not a guaranteed way to add the control.
The option appears but little changes
The source may already be well balanced, may not actually support the feature in that context, or may be dominated by another audio processor. Stable volume is not a promise of identical loudness.

Sound seems compressed
Turn Stable volume off and compare. Also inspect the TV, soundbar and receiver for Auto Volume, night mode, adaptive sound, dialogue enhancement or dynamic-range compression, and avoid stacking several leveling systems while troubleshooting.
Dialogue remains hard to hear
Stable volume is not a dedicated dialogue enhancer. Try Voice boost where available, or use the center-channel and dialogue controls on your soundbar or receiver. Remember that Voice boost disables Stable volume.
Official music videos behave differently
YouTube’s documentation says Stable volume is turned off for official music videos, so their different behavior is expected.
Should you use it?
For casual mixed viewing, Stable volume is worth trying because it can reduce annoying jumps between quiet and loud passages. For films and music, compare both settings and keep the one that preserves the presentation you prefer. If your sound system already normalizes loudness, begin with its processing disabled so you can judge YouTube’s feature on its own.
