HBO Go and HBO Now are legacy U.S. services. HBO Max is the current service. HBO Go authenticated customers who already received HBO through a participating television provider; HBO Now was a standalone HBO subscription; HBO Max expanded the catalog beyond HBO and became the migration destination for eligible users. Your next step depends on whether you paid HBO directly, received it through a provider, or subscribed through a third-party platform.

These were not simply three price tiers. The major differences were who paid, how the account was authenticated and how broad the catalog was.
What HBO Go was
HBO Go was a companion streaming service for people whose cable, satellite or other participating television provider already included HBO. You normally did not buy HBO Go as a separate subscription. Instead, you signed in with provider credentials.
For a former HBO Go customer, the relevant question was whether the provider’s current HBO entitlement includes HBO Max and whether it has been connected to an HBO Max account. In the current app, choose Sign in, then Connect, select the provider and enter the provider’s credentials. Follow the prompts to create or verify an HBO Max account. What HBO Now was
HBO Now was HBO’s historical direct-to-consumer subscription for viewers who wanted HBO without a traditional television package. Its catalog centered on HBO rather than the substantially broader WarnerMedia and Warner Bros. Discovery library later associated with HBO Max.
When HBO Max launched in the United States on May 27, 2020, eligible HBO Now direct-billed customers and eligible existing HBO subscribers could receive HBO Max access without an additional charge. Eligibility depended on the billing relationship and participating provider; it was not universal. See the May 27, 2020 launch announcement.
HBO Now is not the current U.S. signup destination. Do not install an old HBO Now app or look for an HBO Now plan; use HBO Max account recovery, provider connection or current subscription options instead.
What HBO Max is
HBO Max launched as the broader streaming service combining HBO with programming from across the Warner portfolio. The launch description included HBO, Warner Bros. films and television, New Line, DC, CNN, TNT, TBS, truTV, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Crunchyroll, Rooster Teeth, Looney Tunes Cartoons and selected TCM content.

Current Warner Bros. Discovery materials describe HBO Max as including HBO, Warner Bros., Max Originals, DC, Harry Potter and additional entertainment categories. The current brand description is available from Warner Bros. Discovery’s HBO Max page.
What happened to the Max name?
The service was branded Max for an intervening period and is again presented as HBO Max in current 2026 official materials. Warner Bros. Discovery’s support notice says the name change preserves the app experience, programming, plans and pricing. This is a branding change, not a return to HBO Go or HBO Now. What should you do now?
If HBO came with your cable, satellite, internet, mobile or live-TV provider
- Confirm that your package includes HBO Max, not merely another HBO entitlement.
- Open the HBO Max app and choose Sign in.
- Choose Connect, select your provider and enter its account credentials.
- Create or verify the HBO Max account when prompted.
- Use that HBO Max email and password on your other devices.
Having HBO does not always activate streaming automatically. A separate account-linking step may be required.
If you previously paid for HBO Now, HBO Max or Max directly
- Install or open the current HBO Max app.
- Sign in with the email address and password used for the earlier account.
- If the subscription is inactive, select Renew Subscription.
- Choose a plan and billing period, then complete payment.
Official support indicates that former subscribers can generally retain account information such as profiles, My List and watch history when they recover the correct account. Use the renewal instructions and former-subscriber account guidance.

If you are subscribing for the first time
- Go to max.com/product.
- Choose a plan and monthly or annual billing.
- Create an account, or enter your existing HBO Max/Max email if returning.
- Add a payment method and select Start Streaming.
If Apple, Google Play, Roku, Amazon, Samsung or another platform billed you
Check the original receipt and the platform’s subscription settings before changing anything. Cancellation, renewal and payment changes may have to be handled by that intermediary rather than at max.com. See HBO Max billing and subscription support. Current plan and price signals
The following prices were listed in official support materials accessed around August 18, 2026. Verify the live checkout price, taxes, eligibility, renewal terms and promotions before paying.

These figures are carried-over Max prices described in the official name-change notice, so they can change. Choose annual billing only if you expect to keep the service for most of the year and the renewal and cancellation terms make sense.
HBO Only
An official HBO Only page lists $16.99 per month and approximately 4,000 hours of HBO content, while describing Max plans as offering more than 13,000 hours. Because HBO Only and Standard are listed at the same monthly price there, HBO Only is a narrow choice for someone who specifically does not want the broader catalog. Warner Bros. Discovery announced a limited-time U.S. offer on June 18, 2026 advertising 40% savings on annual Basic With Ads, Standard and Premium plans versus 12 months at the regular monthly price. Treat that as a dated promotion, not a guaranteed offer, and check the current checkout page.
Troubleshooting and duplicate-billing prevention
“My HBO subscription does not work in HBO Max.”
- Confirm that your provider package includes HBO Max.
- Repeat Sign in → Connect with the correct provider.
- Try the provider’s own HBO Max activation page.
- Sign out and repeat the connection flow.
- Check whether a third-party platform is the actual billing source.
- Contact the provider if HBO is present but the HBO Max entitlement is missing.
“The app says I need to subscribe even though I paid.”
- Try the old HBO Max or Max email address and use password reset.
- Connect the provider if your HBO came through a package.
- Check Apple, Google Play, Roku, Amazon, Samsung or another intermediary’s subscription page.
- Do not purchase a second subscription until the original billing source is identified.
“I still have an HBO Go or HBO Now app.”
Treat it as a legacy app or account. Install the current HBO Max app from your device’s official app store, try the prior credentials, and use provider activation if the old service was tied to television service. Contact the original billing provider before creating a new account if recovery fails.
“My provider is not listed.”
Providers can appear under a parent company or alternate brand. Check the provider’s HBO Max activation instructions or contact its support team. Do not assume that an unlisted provider supplies HBO Max.

The migration steps above describe the United States. HBO Go and HBO Max availability, provider relationships, account migration and branding have varied by country. An old international HBO Go account is not evidence that the same U.S. activation path applies. Also, an account can remain recoverable even when its subscription is inactive; the correct email and billing path matter.

Bottom line
HBO Go was provider-authenticated HBO streaming, HBO Now was standalone HBO, and HBO Max is the current broader service. Check your existing provider or billing source first, recover the old account before registering again, and use the current HBO Max app rather than a legacy HBO Go or HBO Now app.
