YouTube and SESAC reached a new licensing agreement on September 30, 2024, after some songs and videos disappeared for viewers in the United States. YouTube said previously blocked content would be restored across YouTube and YouTube Music over the next day or two, so the return was gradual rather than instantaneous.
What happened to the music?
Beginning around Saturday, September 28, 2024, users in the United States found some music videos and YouTube Music tracks unavailable. A common message read: “This video contains content from SESAC. It is not available in your country.” Albums and artist pages could remain visible while individual tracks failed to play.
YouTube said it was negotiating a new agreement with SESAC. Coverage described an existing contract deadline around October 1, 2024; YouTube blocked access while negotiations continued. The incident was a licensing dispute, not a platform-wide technical outage.
On September 30, YouTube announced that a deal had been reached and that the previously blocked material would be reinstated over the following day or two. 9to5Google reported YouTube’s restoration announcement, while Digital Music News published SESAC’s statement.

Why did YouTube block the songs?
The disagreement concerned licensing rights for musical works represented by SESAC. YouTube appears to have carried out the blocking as negotiations approached the reported contract deadline. SESAC said its affiliates’ works had been removed unilaterally and before the stated end date.
That distinction matters: SESAC did not delete every video itself. YouTube controlled whether the videos could be played in a particular territory. YouTube’s help documentation explains that contractual music agreements can require videos to be blocked by country: YouTube’s explanation of territory-based contractual blocks.

What SESAC does—and what it does not do
SESAC is a performing-rights organization representing songwriters and music publishers. It is not a record label such as Universal Music Group, Sony Music, or Warner Music Group.
Composition rights versus recording rights
- Musical composition: the melody, lyrics, and publishing interests in a song.
- Sound recording: a particular recorded performance released by an artist or label.
- SESAC’s role: licensing public-performance rights for works in its repertory on behalf of represented writers and publishers.
A recording can therefore be blocked because of rights in its underlying composition even when the artist’s label or official channel is not a SESAC entity. Co-writers and publishers may also belong to different rights organizations. SESAC Music Group describes its rights-management and administration business in its company statement.

Reports identified examples involving:
- Adele
- Ariana Grande
- Bob Dylan
- Green Day
- Jack Harlow
- Kendrick Lamar
- Neil Diamond
- Nirvana
- R.E.M.
- Rush
This is an illustrative list, not a complete catalog. SESAC’s rights can apply to individual songs, writers, or publishers, so not every track by one of these artists—and not every version of an affected song—was necessarily unavailable.
When did the songs return?
YouTube’s September 30 announcement said restoration would occur “over the next day or two.” Catalog databases, regional rights systems, caches, and the separate YouTube and YouTube Music services may update at different speeds. A user could therefore still see an unavailable track for a short time after the agreement was announced.

The public statements said previously blocked content would be restored across YouTube services. They did not establish that every official video, alternate upload, cover, remix, live performance, compilation, or user-uploaded video returned simultaneously. The TheWrap and Engadget reports described the staged return.

“This video contains content from SESAC. It is not available in your country” indicated a territory-based licensing block. It did not mean that the video had necessarily been deleted, that the viewer had received a copyright strike, or that the account was in trouble.

YouTube’s ordinary copyright-removal process is separate: a rights holder can submit a takedown request that may affect an uploader’s channel and produce a strike. The SESAC event was reported as a platform-level contractual block. See YouTube’s copyright-removal guidance for the different process.
Why did viewers see different results?
- Country: The reported outage primarily affected the United States; viewers elsewhere could see different licensing results.
- Work-level rights: An artist’s catalog can contain songs administered by several organizations.
- Upload type: Official videos, catalog tracks, covers, remixes, and user uploads can have different rights records.
- Propagation time: Restoration may reach services and regions at different times.
For that reason, an album page could be visible while one track was blocked, or two users could receive different playback results.
If a song is still unavailable
- Confirm your country and account region; the reported block was U.S.-specific.
- Search for the official artist or label upload rather than an alternate or re-uploaded copy.
- Check both YouTube and YouTube Music.
- If the agreement was just announced, allow time for restoration systems to update.
- Do not assume a current block is still related to SESAC. It could reflect a separate label or publisher dispute, a territory restriction, a removed upload, a Content ID limitation, a catalog change, or a technical issue.
What remains undisclosed?
YouTube and SESAC did not publicly disclose the financial terms, the detailed licensing conditions, or a track-by-track scope of the new agreement in the reports cited here. The verified incident belongs to September–October 2024; it should not be presented as an ongoing 2026 outage without separate confirmation.
The lasting lesson is that streaming availability depends on several overlapping rights: the recording, the composition, publishers, territories, and the platform’s license. A renewal dispute can make an official music video unplayable without the video being permanently deleted.
