Spotify confirmed a real Premium price increase on August 4, 2025, covering multiple markets in South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Latin America and Asia-Pacific. It did not say that every country in those regions was affected or publish one global price list. Spotify later announced a separate update for subscribers in the United States, Estonia and Latvia on January 15, 2026. Your price and start date depend on your country, plan and billing arrangement.
The two Spotify price announcements
| Announcement | Markets named by Spotify | Date announced |
|---|---|---|
| International increase | Multiple markets in South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Latin America and Asia-Pacific | August 4, 2025 |
| Later update | United States, Estonia and Latvia | January 15, 2026 |
Read Spotify’s announcements at Spotify’s August 4, 2025 newsroom post and its January 15, 2026 pricing update. Spotify said occasional price changes support continued innovation, the user experience and value for fans and artists; that is the company’s stated rationale, not an independently established cause.

Current U.S. Premium prices
As listed on Spotify’s U.S. Premium page on August 16, 2026, the standard recurring prices are:
| Plan | Price |
|---|---|
| Individual | $12.99 per month |
| Duo | $18.99 per month |
| Family | $21.99 per month |
| Student | $6.99 per month |
These are the listed recurring prices, not temporary introductory offers. Check the official U.S. Premium page for eligibility and current promotions. Older reports quoting $11.99 for Individual, $16.99 for Duo or $19.99 for Family are outdated.

Why there is no single worldwide price
Spotify’s announcement referred to “multiple markets,” not every country in a region. Prices can differ because of:
- Country, currency and local taxes
- Plan names, features and availability in that market
- Student verification rules
- Introductory, trial and prepaid offers
- Billing through Spotify, Apple, Google Play, a carrier or another partner
For example, Spotify’s South Africa page currently displays Standard at R69.99 per month after the listed introductory offer, Student at R37.99 per month after its offer, and Platinum at R179.99 per month, plus prepaid choices. Those figures apply to South Africa only and cannot be generalized to Africa. See Spotify South Africa’s Premium page.

The frequently repeated €10.99-to-€11.99 example is likewise a market-specific report, not an official worldwide schedule.
When will the higher charge appear?
- Spotify emails existing subscribers about the applicable change.
- A one-month grace period follows the notice.
- The new price starts on the billing date after that period.
There is no universal effective day: your exact date follows your account’s billing cycle. Spotify’s price-update support page says trial users receive one month at the original price after the trial ends, then the new price applies. Promotion terms and local rules can affect the details.

How to check your own price
- Open the price-change email sent by Spotify.
- Open your account page and note the plan, next billing date and payment provider.
- Visit your country’s Spotify Premium page while logged out or in a private browser window to see the offer for new subscribers.
- Check whether tax is included on the checkout screen and receipt.
- Compare the displayed plan with your current plan; do not rely on a screenshot from another country or tier.
The local Premium page is Spotify’s stated reference for current market pricing. A traveler’s physical location does not necessarily change the account’s market; country, payment method and subscription setup can matter.
If you do not want to pay more
Keep Premium
Accepting the change preserves your playlists, saved music, listening history and Premium benefits. Depending on the market, those benefits can include offline listening, ad-free music, Duo or Family sharing, discovery features, and audiobook or other bundles.

Change plans
Check locally available tiers before moving. A smaller household may no longer need Duo or Family, while a student whose eligibility has ended may need Individual. Duo and Family plans can have household or address requirements.
Cancel before the next billing date
Spotify says you can cancel at any time before the next billing date. After cancellation, the account normally continues on the paid plan through the time already covered, then moves to Spotify Free. Free keeps your account content such as playlists and saved tracks, but listening is ad-supported and Premium features end.

Review third-party billing
If Apple, Google Play, a mobile carrier or another partner bills you, cancellation instructions and timing may differ. Cancel through the provider that actually charges you; canceling inside Spotify may not stop partner billing.

- Taxes: The advertised amount may not be the final charge where tax is added separately.
- Promotions: Keep introductory, standard recurring, prepaid and post-trial prices separate when comparing offers.
- Gift cards: Spotify says gift cards bought at a lower price can still be redeemed, but they apply only to Premium Individual.
- Plan redesigns: Names and combinations are not uniform worldwide; the U.S. page lists Individual, Duo, Family and Student, while South Africa displays Standard, Student and Platinum.
Should you stay, downgrade or switch?
- Stay if your playlists, recommendations, offline listening, social features or household sharing are difficult to replace.
- Downgrade or change tiers if fewer people use the account, your student eligibility changed, or a locally available plan better fits your use.
- Use Free if you listen occasionally and can tolerate advertising.
- Compare another service if a local competitor offers the catalog and features you need for less, or if you already value an ecosystem such as Apple devices, ad-free YouTube or Amazon Prime.
Do not assume another service’s price, bundle or availability from a different country. Verify local terms before switching, and do not rely on VPNs or foreign payment methods to obtain regional pricing.
