Yes—OpenAI’s Sora app really was designed to put you and consenting friends into realistic AI-generated scenes. You created a verified “character” from a short video-and-audio recording, controlled who could use it, and prompted short videos with generated dialogue and sound. That description is now historical: OpenAI discontinued the Sora web and app experiences on April 26, 2026.
What Sora was
Sora was OpenAI’s consumer video-generation product. The later Sora 2 model powered a mobile-oriented app that combined video creation with a social discovery feed, remixing and sharing. OpenAI said Sora 2 improved physical behavior, visual realism, steerability, synchronized dialogue and sound effects compared with earlier systems. Its product pages describe those capabilities; they are not an independent guarantee that every result was photorealistic or physically correct (OpenAI’s Sora 2 announcement; Sora 2 system card).
The distinctive idea was not simply typing a text prompt. The app let people cast approved likenesses into short fictional videos, then publish or remix the results in a social environment.
How the “characters” feature worked
1. Record identity material
A user completed a short video-and-audio recording. OpenAI described this as a way to verify identity and capture the person’s appearance and voice for a character (OpenAI’s Sora 2 announcement).

2. Set permission controls
The character owner decided whether and how the character could be used. OpenAI said access could be revoked, so a likeness was not intended to become a permanently public asset (Creating with Sora safely).
3. Prompt a scene
Once approved characters were available, a user could describe a cinematic, comedic, animated, surreal or photorealistic scene. Sora generated the visuals along with audio such as dialogue and sound effects.
4. Add friends through consented access
Friends could appear when they participated in the character and permission system. If an uploaded image contained another person, OpenAI required the uploader to attest that they had consent and the rights to upload it. Consent to upload a photograph should not be treated as permission for every possible scenario, voice line or distribution of the resulting video.

5. Review, remix and share
The app encouraged short-form creation, remixing and sharing. A generated clip could be entertaining while still containing continuity, identity or audio errors, so review before sharing mattered.
What people could make
- A group comedy sketch set in an impossible location.
- A fictional travel or adventure sequence featuring a consenting group.
- An animated version of friends for a birthday or event.
- A short music-video-style scene with generated performance and sound.
- A cinematic interaction between several approved characters.
- A remix of an existing Sora creation with a different setting or action.
Earlier Sora materials covered text, image and video creation, while Sora 2 emphasized short social videos with synchronized sound (Sora overview; Sora launch announcement; Sora 2). OpenAI’s earlier documentation also acknowledged that long, complicated actions could break down and that physics was not always realistic.
Why the results could look convincing
Sora 2 was designed to model movement, scenes and interactions more accurately than earlier video systems. OpenAI highlighted sharper realism, improved physical accuracy, controllability and synchronized audio. The character recording supplied recognizable visual and vocal cues, helping the system depict a participant rather than an unspecified actor.

Those are OpenAI’s stated product and system-card claims, not proof that every frame preserved identity or obeyed real-world physics. A recognizable face could still drift, and a plausible-looking event was never evidence that it happened.
Consent, safety and provenance
Access was meant to be permission-based
OpenAI’s design gave the character owner control over use and the ability to withdraw access. The stated goal was to reduce unauthorized likeness use, not to make misuse impossible.

OpenAI described tighter controls for recognizable real people than for ordinary fictional content. Public figures, sexual content, deceptive or abusive scenarios, and many requests involving minors or young-looking people were restricted or blocked. Image-to-video requests involving real people also received additional safety scrutiny (Creating with Sora safely; Launching Sora responsibly; Sora 2 safety mitigations).

Watermarks helped identify origin
OpenAI said Sora videos included visible and invisible provenance signals, including C2PA metadata. These signals can help establish how a file was produced, but they do not prove that an unmarked video is real, that a marked video depicts a true event, or that provenance survives screenshots, edits and re-uploads (Creating with Sora safely).
Moderation was part of the workflow
OpenAI described automated moderation, user reporting and additional monitoring for likeness and deception risks. A harmless prompt could still be blocked if it included a real person, a minor, a sensitive event or a combination of actions that triggered a safety rule.
Where Sora could fail
- Faces could change between shots or lose a person’s recognizable features.
- Voices could shift in tone, pronunciation or timing.
- Lip movement and spoken dialogue could be out of sync.
- Hands, fingers and object boundaries could appear distorted.
- Objects, clothing, logos, signs and text could merge, disappear or change.
- Several characters might receive the wrong action or line of dialogue.
- Audio could sound plausible without matching the visible scene.
- Long sequences with many interacting actions were less coherent than short, simple clips.
These limitations explain why “realistic” described an intended style, not a guarantee of reliable identity, continuity or truth.

Why a request might have been rejected
- The character owner had not approved access, or had revoked it.
- The prompt requested a public figure, minor, young-looking person or sensitive real-world scenario.
- The image upload lacked the required consent or rights.
- The scene suggested sexual, abusive, deceptive or reputational harm.
- The prompt combined too many complex actions for consistent generation.
- The service or particular feature was unavailable.
Do not try to work around a block by using a friend’s photo or voice without explicit permission. Consent should cover both appearance and voice when synthetic dialogue is involved, and sharing a fictional clip can still create privacy, harassment or reputational harm.
Is Sora still available?
No. OpenAI says its Sora web and app experiences were discontinued on April 26, 2026. Former users were directed to export creations through sora.chatgpt.com/sunset, subject to the available export period. OpenAI’s notice also listed September 24, 2026 as the scheduled Sora API discontinuation date; check the notice for any subsequent status change (OpenAI discontinuation notice).
Consequently, old articles telling readers to sign up for the Sora app or presenting the character feature as a current consumer service are out of date.

- Label fictional or AI-generated footage clearly, especially when it could be mistaken for news or a real event.
- Keep the original file and provenance information when authenticity matters.
- Do not use synthetic footage as evidence in legal, political, employment, journalistic or reputational decisions without independent verification.
