First, identify which problem you have
You own the video
You see “Comments are turned off,” or viewers tell you they cannot comment. The fix is in YouTube Studio, not the ordinary video-watching menu.
You are watching someone else’s video
If comments are missing on one video, the creator may have disabled them or the video may be Made for Kids. If they are missing across many videos, a viewer-side setting such as Restricted Mode or a supervised account is more likely.
Turn comments on for one of your videos
Desktop
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Choose Content in the left menu.
- Click the video thumbnail.
- Scroll down and open Show more.
- Under Comments and ratings, set comments to On.
- Click Save.
You can also select a moderation level: no moderation, Basic, Strict, or holding all comments for review. Moderation reduces unwanted posts but means legitimate comments may wait for approval; holding everything requires the most review work. Details are in YouTube’s comment-settings guide.

Mobile
In the YouTube app, sign in, open one of your videos, tap Comments below the video (or beside a Short), tap Settings, then under For this video tap Comments and select the setting you want. Labels vary by device and app release; update YouTube or YouTube Studio if the controls are missing. See the current Android instructions and YouTube’s general help page.
Change comments on several existing videos
In YouTube Studio, open Content, select multiple videos, choose Edit, pick the comments-related setting, and apply it. YouTube can change the wording of the bulk-edit menu, so look for Edit after selecting the videos rather than relying on an old tutorial’s exact label.

Set the default for future uploads
YouTube Studio’s default comment setting applies to new videos and posts. It does not change existing uploads. Use the individual-video control for one older video or bulk editing for several.
Why the comments control may be unavailable
Made for Kids
YouTube disables comments on videos designated Made for Kids because children’s content has feature restrictions under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act and other applicable laws. The comments toggle will not restore them while that classification applies. Read YouTube’s audience-setting guidance and its explanation of the viewer experience.

Do not change the audience merely to get comments back. If the classification is genuinely wrong, appeal it:
- In Studio on desktop, open Content and find the video marked Set to made for kids.
- Open the audience notice and choose Appeal.
- Explain why the content is not directed to children and submit.
On mobile, use YouTube Studio app → Menu → Videos → select the video → Restrictions → Set to Made for Kids → Appeal. YouTube may set or override an audience selection; an unsuccessful appeal leaves the classification in place. You can check the status using YouTube’s audience-status help.

Private videos
Comments cannot be enabled on a private video. If you need limited distribution with comments, change visibility to Unlisted: anyone with the link can watch, comments can be available, and the video is not listed in public search. Private videos are limited to specifically authorized viewers and do not support comments; Public videos are discoverable and have configurable comment settings. See YouTube’s comment-setting documentation.
Supervised accounts
Supervised YouTube accounts have restricted engagement features. Depending on the account and content setting, a child may read comments but be unable to write them, while Made for Kids videos have comments unavailable. A viewer generally cannot override these limits from the normal YouTube settings menu; a parent or account manager controls the relevant restrictions. See supervised-account comment limits and the general supervised-account feature list.

Understand “off,” “paused,” and moderation
- On: viewers may comment, subject to eligibility and your moderation choices.
- Paused: existing comments remain visible, but new comments are temporarily stopped.
- Off: viewers cannot comment and existing comments are hidden from the watch page while the setting is off.
- On with moderation: comments can be posted but may be held for review under Basic, Strict, or all-comments moderation.
YouTube says comments that were hidden because they were turned off reappear when comments are turned back on, provided no separate restriction applies. Held comments are a moderation queue, not proof that commenting is disabled.
Restore comments when you are only watching
Turn off Restricted Mode
Restricted Mode can hide comments as well as filter videos. It may be enabled in one browser, device, profile, or network without affecting another. Follow YouTube’s current Restricted Mode instructions:
- Desktop: click your profile picture, choose Restricted Mode, and turn it off.
- iPhone or iPad: tap your profile picture → Settings → General → turn off Restricted Mode.
- Mobile website: tap your profile picture → Settings → Account → turn off Restricted Mode.
If the switch is locked or turns back on, Family Link, a school, library, workplace administrator, mobile-network filter, DNS rule, browser policy, or device setting may be enforcing it. You may need to change the setting separately in each browser or device. YouTube also documents the comments impact at this Restricted Mode page.
Check the video and account
- Test a different video. A single missing comment section usually points to that video’s settings.
- Check whether the video is marked Made for Kids; comments are unavailable there regardless of your Restricted Mode setting.
- Sign in and out, then try a private/incognito window or another browser and device.
- Update the YouTube app and clear its cache where your operating system provides that option.
- Ask whether the problem affects every account on the device or only yours.
These browser, cache, and app steps are troubleshooting suggestions, not ways to bypass a policy, parental, or institutional restriction.

Age restriction controls who can access a video; it is not the same as the Made for Kids designation. Age-restricted videos are unavailable to signed-out viewers and viewers under 18, and Restricted Mode can hide them. Do not assume age restriction alone always turns comments off. YouTube explains the distinction in its age-restricted-content guidance.
Quick Recap
When you cannot turn comments on yourself
- You are viewing someone else’s video; only the channel owner or YouTube can change its comment setting.
- The video is Made for Kids; only a valid audience correction or appeal can change that classification.
- The video is private; comments require changing visibility to unlisted or public.
- Your supervised account blocks commenting; a parent or account manager must control the restriction.
