MSTY—short for “My Song To You”—was a London-based messaging app launched in August 2015. It let people pair a short, curated song excerpt with an image and a written note, then send the composition to a friend. Apple Music provided a route to the referenced track; MSTY did not send full songs inside ordinary messages.
What MSTY was
MSTY was a music-enhanced messaging app founded by Grant Bovey, who was identified in launch-era coverage as its chief executive. Its pitch was that a song could express a feeling—romance, nostalgia, celebration, apology or humor—in a way that text or an image alone might not. It was presented as a blend of messaging, greeting cards and music discovery, rather than as a new streaming service. Fast Company’s August 2015 launch coverage and Tech Times’ report describe the concept and its launch-era positioning.
Contemporary reports said the app was available for iOS and Android. They disagreed on the geographic scope of its initial rollout: reports cited both 127 and 155 countries, so neither figure should be treated as a settled count. Gadgets 360 and Fox News gave differing country totals.
How a music message was made
The reported workflow combined a track excerpt with familiar messaging elements. A sender picked a song, chose a mood, genre or themed playlist, selected a stock background or personal photo, added a short note, previewed the result and sent it through MSTY. The exact text limit was not consistently reported. A recipient without the app was reportedly prompted to install it to experience the message. Fox News’ beta-era account describes the workflow, while Gadgets 360 describes the combination of music, text and imagery.

What Apple Music did—and did not do
MSTY’s Apple Music connection was chiefly a way to connect a message to the song beyond its short excerpt. Reports described a clip of about 30 seconds embedded or played in the message, alongside a link to the relevant song or album. Depending on the recipient’s account, region and the Apple services available at the time, that link could lead to streaming or a purchase. Apple Music was therefore part of the discovery and commercial path, not simply a host for full-length tracks transmitted in messages. The Music Network, Gadgets 360 and Fox News reported on the clips and Apple links.
It helps to distinguish Apple Music streaming from purchasing a track through Apple’s store. Launch-era coverage sometimes used “Apple Music” and “iTunes” loosely while describing the broader Apple music ecosystem. A link to a track page did not guarantee that every recipient could immediately play the complete song: access depended on the recipient’s service, account and regional catalog. The integration also did not establish that Apple owned or operated MSTY.

Why the excerpt and curation mattered
A short excerpt could make a message feel like a tiny musical postcard: the sender paired a particular moment in a song with an image and words. That choice also introduced a limitation. A 30-second passage can land differently from the track as a whole, and the recipient may not share the sender’s association with it.
The strongest specific launch-era accounts describe the excerpts as selected by people, not generated automatically. Fox News said human editors chose emotionally effective sections, and Gadgets 360 likewise described human-cut clips. A Trend Hunter description instead mentioned an algorithm finding the best section, but that conflicts with those more detailed contemporary accounts; human curation is the better-supported description.

Licensing, catalog size and the business challenge
For MSTY, the difficult part was not only assembling a message interface. Commercial recordings needed permission for use as shareable excerpts, and the rights and catalog available could vary by territory. Contemporary coverage cited relationships involving Universal, Sony and Warner, though the precise legal scope of each agreement is not independently established here. Rights clearance was central to the product’s promise—and a source of operational complexity. The Music Network reported on the label relationships.

Those rights did not mean every title was available to every user in every market. Regional licensing, changes in catalog availability and the need to open a separate music service could all interrupt the path from a message to a full track.

MSTY’s distinction was its particular mix of licensed short clips, visual templates, text and direct music-service links—not the invention of music sharing. Contemporary coverage also named Rithm, Music Messenger, Tango, La-La and Facebook Messenger’s Ditty as competitors or neighboring services. The Music Network, Fox News and Gadgets 360 placed the launch in that broader field.

The concept traded plain-message utility for expressive intent: a song could carry mood, but it could also be ambiguous. Apple links offered a path to listening or purchase, but added friction for someone without the relevant app, account or regional access. MSTY’s human-picked excerpts made the musical moment feel deliberate, while giving the sender less control over the exact passage than choosing any point in a full track might.
Launch-era limitations and commercial plans
Fox News’ beta-era description reported that sent messages could not be deleted, users could forward them, and the app stored about 50 incoming messages, with older ones removed as new messages arrived. Group broadcasting and downloading favorite messages were described as future features, not confirmed launch capabilities. The same account said there was no advertising during the early adoption period. These are observations about the 2015 beta or launch experience, not statements about a current app.
Contemporary business coverage described potential revenue from Apple-related referrals: a payment when a user subscribed to Apple Music through MSTY, and a fee when someone bought a track through iTunes. The Music Network, citing VentureBeat, reported a figure of $7.50 per person who became an Apple subscriber through the app. That was a reported deal figure, not a verified general Apple commission rate. MSTY’s founder was also reported to be prioritizing user growth rather than advertising at the outset, with sponsorships around occasions such as Mother’s Day or Father’s Day mentioned as possible future opportunities. The Music Network’s account covers those reported commercial plans.
Does MSTY still exist?
MSTY should be understood as a historical 2015 launch, not a current Apple Music feature or a service readers can rely on today. A business-directory profile labels the company “probably closed,” but does not establish a precise shutdown date. No current official consumer product presence is established by the available record. The directory listing is the basis for the qualified status description.
