It is a streaming box, an app-based discovery layer and, separately, Apple’s own subscription service. The 2016 criticism that Apple had created “another way” to watch television was fair: the TV app organized participating services but did not provide one universal catalog, bill or live-TV package. In 2026, Apple TV is a far more capable platform, yet it still depends on separate providers, subscriptions and regional rights.
What Apple was actually announcing in 2016
The title of Paul Thurrott’s October 29, 2016 article exposed an awkward naming problem. “Apple TV” could mean three different things:
- Apple TV hardware: the set-top box connected to a television.
- The Apple TV app: software intended to organize shows and films from participating services.
- Third-party streaming apps: services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Hulu, each with its own account, catalog and commercial relationship.
Apple’s own subscription service came later. The 2016 TV app was principally an interface for discovering and continuing programs supplied by other apps, not a conventional television provider.

What the 2016 TV app could—and could not—do
The app aimed to reduce the friction of fragmented streaming. It could bring participating services into a central watch and discovery experience, show available programs, continue supported viewing and surface live programming supplied by compatible apps.
It was not a DVR, cable replacement or guaranteed single-sign-on system. It did not make every service part of one subscription, and it could not integrate providers that declined to participate. Netflix and Amazon Prime Video were specifically absent from the TV app at launch, a historical fact that should not be confused with their current availability on Apple’s platform.
Why aggregation was a difficult business problem
Apple wanted to own the front door
A universal guide would let Apple control discovery, recommendations and the moment when viewers decide what to watch. That could make Apple TV the operating layer for television even when Apple did not produce or host the program.

Providers wanted to keep their customers
Streaming companies had strong reasons to retain their own brands, billing relationships, viewing data and app engagement. Participation in Apple’s interface could increase reach while reducing a provider’s control over the customer relationship.
Convenience depended on participation
The value of a central guide rose with every major service included. Missing catalogs created the exact problem the app was meant to solve: viewers still had to remember which app carried a program and sometimes leave Apple’s interface to watch it.
Thurrott compared Apple’s strategy with earlier attempts to make a central technology hub replace individual content brands. That is his analogy and criticism, not proof that the products were identical.

What Thurrott criticized in the 2016 product
Hardware limitations
His contemporaneous review noted that the fourth-generation Apple TV lacked 4K video support and criticized the Siri Remote. He also judged its app breadth and value less favorably than Roku and Amazon Fire TV. Those observations describe the 2016 model, not today’s Apple TV 4K.
A front end rather than a television service
The central complaint was that Apple’s TV app was only a front end for other apps. Without broad partner participation, it could not become a complete television service. The app made discovery easier where it worked, but it did not create a unified supply of programming.
What Apple TV is in 2026
Apple now presents Apple TV as both a premium streaming box and a broader platform. Apple’s current app page lists Apple Originals, movies to rent or buy, premium channels, selected streaming services and cable-provider programming. It also advertises live Formula 1, MLS and Friday Night Baseball in supported markets. Apple’s U.S. store lists an A15 Bionic chip, Siri Remote and power cord in the box. An HD-capable television, HDMI cable and network connection are required; Apple says the HDMI cable is sold separately. Apple advertises three months of Apple TV access with a qualifying purchase, subject to eligibility and terms. Verify current details at Apple’s buying page.
Apple TV hardware, app and subscription are not the same product

Apple explicitly says an Apple TV subscription does not include third-party branded subscriptions or separately billed rentals and purchases. A title appearing in search may therefore require another subscription, a separate app, or a rental fee. Apple explains these distinctions in its Apple TV support guide.

What the original argument still gets right
- Discovery is not ownership: finding a program in Apple’s interface does not mean Apple supplies it.
- One app is not one bill: provider subscriptions, channels, rentals and purchases remain separate commercial products.
- Integration varies: search coverage, watch progress, recommendations, playback handoff and authentication differ by service.
- Regional rights matter: sports, channels, providers and even app availability differ by country.
- Provider apps still matter: some features or catalogs require opening the service’s own application.
What changed—and what did not
Apple eventually addressed the 2016 hardware criticism with 4K-capable models and expanded the platform well beyond a video box. It now has its own subscription service, promotes more participating providers and offers live sports, smart-home control, music, games and FaceTime.
Those improvements do not turn Apple TV into a universal television subscription. Apple’s hub can simplify discovery and playback, but it cannot waive a provider’s subscription, erase regional restrictions or guarantee that every service exposes every feature inside Apple’s app.
Who should buy Apple TV 4K?
It is a strong fit if you:
- Already use an iPhone, iPad, AirPods, HomePod or other Apple products.
- Want a polished set-top-box interface for a 4K HDR television and compatible audio system.
- Value Apple services, purchased Apple media, Apple Music, Apple Arcade, FaceTime or Home control.
- Prefer premium hardware to the least expensive streaming stick.
- Need wired Ethernet or Thread support, available on the $249 model.
It is a weaker fit if you:
- Only need inexpensive access to basic streaming apps.
- Have no Apple ecosystem and do not value Apple-specific features.
- Expect one payment to include Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, live television and sports.
- Mainly want free ad-supported channels.
- Are satisfied with your television’s built-in apps.
- Need a service unavailable or only partially integrated in your region.
Alternatives and the simplest decision
Roku (roku.com) is a platform-neutral alternative with lower-cost hardware tiers. Amazon Fire TV (amazon.com/fire-tv) suits households invested in Amazon and Alexa. Google TV devices (tv.google) fit Android and Google Assistant users. A smart TV from Samsung, LG, Sony or Vizio avoids buying another box, although interface speed, app support, updates and advertising vary by model.
Choose Apple TV 4K for its hardware quality and Apple ecosystem, not because it consolidates every streaming service into one subscription. Before buying, check whether the services and sports rights you care about are available in your country and whether playback stays in Apple’s app or moves to a provider app.

Apple did not create a single replacement for television. It created a high-end operating layer for modern television—considerably more capable than in 2016, but still dependent on the fragmented services it was designed to organize. Thurrott’s original insight remains useful: a convenient interface is not the same thing as a complete television service.
