When a YouTube video shows a picture but no audio, the cause is usually muted playback, the wrong volume control, audio routed to another device, a stuck app, or a TV and soundbar format mismatch. Follow the checks below from least disruptive to most involved; most problems can be fixed without buying anything.
Try these one-minute checks first
- Play two or three unrelated YouTube videos. If only one is silent, its uploaded audio may be damaged, inaudible, or unusually quiet.
- Tap or click the video to show the controls and check the speaker icon. Unmute it and raise the player volume.
- Raise the volume for the device actually playing sound: media volume on a phone or tablet, the TV remote, or the soundbar/receiver remote. Ringer volume does not necessarily control YouTube.
- Temporarily turn off Bluetooth and disconnect AirPlay, headphones, speakers, USB audio devices, or other cast destinations.
- Play sound in another app. Try a music app, a TV broadcast, or another streaming service.
- Force-close YouTube, reopen it, and restart the phone, TV, or streaming device.
- Install available YouTube and system updates. YouTube’s guidance also recommends checking browser or device sound settings and restarting the browser or device: YouTube Help.
- Only then clear the app cache on supported Android devices or reinstall YouTube where the platform allows it.
First identify where the failure is
| Test | Result | Most likely area |
|---|---|---|
| Other YouTube videos have sound | Yes | The original video has defective or extremely quiet audio. |
| Other TV or phone apps have sound | Yes | YouTube’s mute state, app data, or its audio route. |
| No app has sound | No | System volume, output selection, speakers, Bluetooth, soundbar, receiver, or hardware. |
| Phone playback works, casting does not | Yes | The TV, cast receiver, HDMI path, or TV audio output. |
| TV speakers work, soundbar does not | Yes | Soundbar/receiver input, cable, ARC/eARC, optical connection, or format. |
| PCM works but surround does not | Yes | An audio-format compatibility problem. |
YouTube recommends trying another device, connection, Chromecast route, or an HDMI-connected computer to separate an account or stream problem from a local device problem: YouTube troubleshooting.
Fix YouTube on an Android phone or tablet
- Start the video and press volume up. Open the expanded volume panel and make sure Media, not just ringtone volume, is raised.
- Turn Bluetooth off and unplug any USB-C audio accessory. Some Android phones offer an “app sound output” or per-app audio control; make sure YouTube is assigned to the intended speaker.
- Force-stop YouTube, reopen it, and restart the phone.
- Update YouTube in Google Play and install any Android system update.
- Clear the cache: Settings → Apps (or Apps and notifications) → See all apps → YouTube → Storage and cache → Clear cache. Labels differ by Android edition and manufacturer.
- If that fails, Clear storage/Clear data is a later option. It can sign you out and reset local app settings, so use it only after the lower-risk steps.
If other apps are also silent, inspect speaker openings, headphone detection, accessibility audio balance, and hardware condition instead of assuming YouTube is at fault. Avoid a full settings reset as an early measure.
Fix YouTube on an iPhone or iPad
- Play a video and press the physical volume-up button. Open Control Center and raise the media slider.
- Open the output selector in Control Center and choose the iPhone or iPad speaker. Disconnect Bluetooth headphones, speakers, AirPlay destinations, or CarPlay temporarily.
- Check the device’s physical mute switch or Action button, then replay the video. Its behavior depends on the model and installed iOS or iPadOS version.
- Force-close YouTube, restart the device, and update YouTube in the App Store.
- Install an available iOS or iPadOS update. If only YouTube remains silent, delete and reinstall the app.
Fix YouTube on a smart TV or streaming device
- Press mute and volume up on the TV remote, then confirm the selected audio output.
- Open another TV app. If every app is silent, troubleshoot the TV or external audio system rather than YouTube.
- Close and reopen YouTube. Restart the TV or streaming device. For a full power cycle, YouTube advises unplugging the device, waiting at least 30 seconds, and reconnecting it: TV troubleshooting guidance.
- Check for YouTube app and TV firmware/system updates.
- Reinstall YouTube if the platform permits it. On Android TV or Google TV, supported models may expose Settings → Apps → YouTube → Force stop and Clear cache; exact menus vary by brand and model.
Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TV, and built-in TV software use different labels and capabilities. Use the device’s own restart, update, and app-management menus rather than applying a menu path from another platform.

When a soundbar, receiver, ARC/eARC, or optical connection is involved
Switch the TV audio output temporarily to TV speakers, then replay YouTube.
- Sound returns: the fault is downstream of the TV. Check the soundbar or receiver’s selected input, reseat HDMI or optical cables, and power-cycle both devices.
- Sound remains absent: continue checking TV mute, output selection, and another app before blaming the external equipment.
HDMI ARC/eARC handshakes can fail after switching apps or waking equipment. Confirm the soundbar or receiver is on the ARC/eARC input and that the cable is connected to the labeled ARC/eARC ports. As a compatibility test, change the TV’s digital audio format to PCM or stereo, then test YouTube again. TCL lists PCM as a possible remedy for certain YouTube audio configurations: TCL YouTube audio issues. PCM can remove multichannel or surround output, so note the original setting and restore it if it makes no difference.
If YouTube is silent only while casting
Casting normally makes the TV or Chromecast play the stream while the phone acts as a remote; the phone’s speaker volume is not the TV’s volume. Check the TV mute state, selected TV output, soundbar/receiver input, and HDMI connection.

- Stop casting and play the same video locally on the phone.
- If local playback works, start casting again and restart both the phone and cast receiver if necessary.
- Open YouTube directly on the TV, when available. Direct TV playback separates a casting problem from a TV-app or audio-output problem.
If YouTube is silent in a computer browser

Sony documents an Android TV case in which switching between YouTube and TV apps can temporarily create an audio-focus conflict; its model-specific workaround is pressing the TV button again: Sony support. Treat this as a Sony/Android-TV-specific edge case, not a universal YouTube fix.
When the problem is not YouTube
Contact the TV, phone, soundbar, receiver, or streaming-device manufacturer when all apps remain silent after a restart, both TV speakers and external outputs fail, ARC/eARC repeatedly drops audio, or there is evidence of liquid damage, a blocked speaker, or hardware failure. If the issue persists across multiple devices and playback methods, use YouTube’s in-app route: profile icon → Help and feedback → Send feedback. YouTube TV is a separate service and app context; these steps address ordinary YouTube video playback.
