BBC iPlayer is officially available only in the UK. A UK TV Licence does not create an overseas streaming entitlement. If you are travelling, the main supported option is to download eligible programmes before leaving the UK and watch them offline before they expire. A VPN may sometimes make iPlayer load, but BBC terms prohibit using technical measures such as a VPN to access iPlayer from outside the UK, and BBC can block VPN addresses.
People already abroad should instead use BBC.com, the BBC app, BBC Player where locally offered, or a licensed service carrying the particular programme.
Why BBC iPlayer is restricted outside the UK
BBC iPlayer uses geographic controls and is intended for audiences within the UK licensing area. Programme rights are also commonly negotiated by territory, so the BBC may not have permission to stream a title worldwide. A BBC account, UK email address or UK postcode does not override those controls.
BBC Help describes iPlayer as a UK service tied to a valid UK TV Licence: BBC Help on iPlayer and subscriptions. The BBC’s terms also say not to stream or download iPlayer television programmes outside the UK: BBC Terms of Use (PDF).

Can a UK resident watch while travelling?
Not by simply signing in. A TV Licence covers use of iPlayer in the UK; it does not make live streaming or new downloads available overseas. TV Licensing identifies one practical exception: programmes downloaded before departure can generally be watched abroad until their viewing window ends, usually up to 30 days after the programme was shown live. “Usually” matters—expiry varies by title.
Use this process before you leave:
- While physically in the UK, open the official BBC iPlayer website or app.
- Sign in to the BBC account you use for the service.
- Open the programme page and check for the download control. Not every title is downloadable.
- Download over Wi-Fi and wait until the app confirms completion.
- Test playback before travelling, preferably with the device offline.
- After departure, play the downloaded file offline and check its displayed expiry date.
Starting a new download abroad is not an officially supported method. Offline playback is temporary, can depend on the app and device, and stops when the download expires. TV Licensing’s guidance is at BBC iPlayer and the TV Licence.

Does a TV Licence make overseas streaming legal?
No. The licence requirement and the geographic service boundary are separate conditions. Holding a current UK licence does not authorise streaming or downloading iPlayer programmes while outside the UK. Do not describe overseas VPN use as automatically criminal everywhere; laws differ by jurisdiction. The clearly established point is that it conflicts with BBC terms, may conflict with a provider’s terms or local rules, and does not create a new licence entitlement.
Can a VPN access BBC iPlayer abroad?
A VPN routes traffic through a server, and a UK server can sometimes make a website identify the connection as UK-based. That is a technical possibility, not BBC-approved access. BBC terms prohibit using a VPN or similar technical measure to access iPlayer from outside the UK. The BBC may also identify and block VPN or datacentre IP ranges, so no provider can guarantee continuing access.

VPN companies advertise support, but their claims are not proof of permanent availability. ExpressVPN advertises UK access and multiple device options while warning that users must follow platform terms: ExpressVPN BBC iPlayer page and ExpressVPN streaming terms guidance. Surfshark likewise says a VPN does not provide free BBC access or remove users’ responsibility to follow applicable rules: Surfshark BBC guide.
If a privacy VPN connection is not routing correctly
For legitimate privacy or security use—not as a promise of bypassing BBC restrictions—check that the VPN is connected, that the selected endpoint is in the intended country, and that DNS or IPv6 leaks are not exposing the real connection. Restart the browser or app, clear cached location data, disable conflicting proxies or private-DNS settings, and try another endpoint. iOS apps may require reinstallation rather than a cache-clearing option. A work, school, hotel or mobile network may block VPN traffic.

Why a VPN may fail even when it connected
- The BBC has blocked the VPN’s known IP range; another server may work temporarily, or none may work.
- Browser and app location caches can disagree.
- DNS or IPv6 leaks reveal a non-UK network.
- A smart TV, streaming box or router setup may leave some traffic outside the VPN tunnel.
- The iPlayer app may not be available in the device’s non-UK app-store region.
- Account, payment or postcode checks are separate from IP geolocation.
- The programme may have expired or have different territorial rights.
- Roaming mobile data, carrier-grade NAT and corporate VPNs can produce misleading geolocation.
What international BBC services actually offer
BBC.com, the BBC app, BBC subscriptions and BBC Player are separate from iPlayer. None is a worldwide version of the UK catch-up catalogue.
| Service | Main role | Availability | Includes UK iPlayer? |
|---|---|---|---|
| BBC iPlayer | UK television and radio live/catch-up service | UK only | Not applicable |
| BBC.com / BBC app | International news and selected content | Country-dependent | No |
| BBC.com subscription | Paid international BBC content | United States and Canada as listed by BBC Help | No |
| BBC Player | Provider-authenticated international service | Market-specific, including eligible Singapore arrangements | No |
BBC.com subscriptions in the United States and Canada
As listed by BBC Help in June 2026, the United States plan costs $8.99 per month, $49.99 for the first year, then $89.99 annually. Canada’s plan costs $12.99 per month, $69.99 for the first year, then $124.99 annually. Taxes may apply and prices or promotions can change. These subscriptions provide country-specific BBC.com benefits, not iPlayer. BBC Help also notes differences in available features—for example, a BBC News livestream is available in the United States but unavailable in Canada under existing rights arrangements. See BBC subscription pricing and the iPlayer subscription explanation.

BBC Player
BBC Player is a separate authenticated service offered through eligible local providers. BBC’s help page describes arrangements with StarHub TV and Singtel CAST in Singapore and says online streaming is unavailable outside Singapore, although previously downloaded programmes may remain available until expiry. It is not a general international signup: BBC Player help.
Legal ways to find a BBC programme abroad
Search by the exact programme title in your current country rather than assuming iPlayer exclusivity. Rights can differ by country, season, date and subscription tier. Check:
- BBC.com and the BBC app for international news and selected videos, podcasts or articles.
- BBC Player where an eligible local television provider offers it.
- BritBox, Acorn TV and other licensed streaming services in your country.
- Your national public broadcaster or a commercial broadcaster that bought the rights.
- Digital purchase or rental stores.
- Official programme pages and BBC social or video channels for clips and other shareable material.
Do not assume that a service carrying one BBC series carries every season, or that availability in one country applies elsewhere. Radio and BBC Sounds availability can also differ from television rights, and live sport or major events often have especially strict territorial restrictions.
Choose the best option for your situation
| Your situation | Most appropriate answer |
|---|---|
| UK resident taking a short trip | Download eligible programmes in the UK, test them offline and note their expiry dates. |
| UK TV Licence holder already abroad | The licence alone does not enable streaming; use valid downloads or local licensed services. |
| International viewer seeking BBC news | Use BBC.com or the BBC app, subject to country-specific access and any paywall. |
| Viewer in the United States or Canada | Consider the BBC.com subscription if its international features meet your needs; it does not include iPlayer. |
| Viewer in Singapore | Check eligibility through StarHub or Singtel for BBC Player. |
| Looking for one particular programme | Search the title across local broadcasters and licensed services. |
| Considering a VPN | Understand that it may work technically but is unofficial, blockable and contrary to BBC iPlayer terms outside the UK. |
Bottom line
There is no officially supported way to stream BBC iPlayer outside the UK. For a planned trip, download eligible programmes before departure and watch them within the displayed viewing window. If you are already abroad, use BBC.com, BBC Player where available, or a licensed local service. A VPN can sometimes produce a UK-looking connection, but it is not a licence, not guaranteed to work and conflicts with BBC terms for overseas iPlayer access.
