Kate Middleton, now Catherine, Princess of Wales, hosted the fourth Together at Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey on 6 December 2024. The Lover’s Knot Tiara appearance often linked to the phrase “after tiara moment” happened later, at a French state banquet on 8 July 2025—not before the 2024 service.
What happened at the 2024 Christmas carol service?
Catherine hosted Together at Christmas at Westminster Abbey on 6 December 2024, joined by Prince William and their children. During the event, the children hung dedication messages on a Kindness Tree outside the Abbey, according to ITV.
The service was filmed for a Christmas Eve broadcast on ITV. The annual gathering began in 2021 with support from The Royal Foundation, recognizing people and organizations that supported their communities during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2024 service’s message
The service centered on love, empathy, kindness and mutual support. In a letter to guests, Catherine wrote:
#1 Best Overall
“The Christmas story encourages us to consider the experiences and feelings of others. It also reflects our own vulnerabilities and reminds us of the importance of giving and receiving empathy, as well as just how much we need each other in spite of our differences.”
The Associated Press reproduced the letter and said the invitation list included 1,600 people recognized for helping others in their communities.
How many people attended?
Reports use different descriptions, so the figures should not be treated as one reconciled headcount.
| Source | Wording |
|---|---|
| Associated Press | 1,600 people were invited. |
| ABC News | Over 1,000 invited guests attended. |
ABC also described the 2024 broadcast as the fourth annual service since Catherine launched the tradition in 2021.
What Catherine wore in 2024
ITV identified Catherine’s red coat as a Sarah Burton design for Alexander McQueen. The coat had a large black bow and black buttons. This description confirms what she wore at the 2024 service; it is not evidence of an officially sold replica or an endorsement of a particular product.
When was the tiara moment?
The clearly documented tiara appearance associated with this headline occurred on 8 July 2025, when Catherine wore the Lover’s Knot Tiara at a French state banquet for President Emmanuel Macron. Town & Country reported that it was her first reported tiara appearance since she announced her cancer diagnosis.
A state banquet is a different occasion from the Westminster Abbey carol service, and the July 2025 date follows the December 2024 event. It therefore would be inaccurate to describe that tiara appearance as preceding the 2024 Together at Christmas service.

The Associated Press reported that the 2024 order of service used a cover image by British artist Charlie Mackesy and named his 2019 book The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse. That reference provides cultural context for the programme; it does not establish that the book was sold at the service or featured in a 2025 edition.
Why the headline can be confusing
Together at Christmas has been held annually since 2021, so a headline without a publication date can blur separate years. The documented December 2024 service and the July 2025 tiara appearance should be read as two chronological events unless a later annual service is explicitly identified.
