Dying for Sex is an eight-episode FX comedy-drama on Hulu about what happens when a Stage IV metastatic breast cancer diagnosis forces Molly to reconsider her marriage, her desires and the time she has left. Its sexual frankness gets the attention, but the series’ real subject is the sustaining power of friendship. The result is often funny, frequently sad and, in Mary McNamara’s phrase, “deeply humane.”
What is Dying for Sex about?
The official synopsis follows Molly after she receives a Stage IV metastatic breast cancer diagnosis. She leaves her husband and begins exploring the breadth of her sexual desires. That premise makes sex the show’s most obvious provocation, yet the story is built around larger questions: how illness changes a person’s sense of self, what honesty can cost, and who remains when a conventional life no longer fits.
FX describes the series as inspired by the true story of Molly Kochan, whose experiences were originally shared in a Wondery podcast made with her best friend, Nikki Boyer. “Inspired by” matters here: the connection to Kochan and Boyer is real, but the television series should not be treated as a documentary record in which every scene reproduces an event literally.
The friendship at the center
Molly’s relationship with Nikki is the emotional engine. Their bond gives the show a place to put fear, anger and absurdity when the medical crisis becomes overwhelming. McNamara’s Los Angeles Times review, published April 3, 2025, argues that the friendship carries the deepest feeling in the series and highlights Jenny Slate’s performance alongside Michelle Williams’ work as Molly.

That emphasis keeps the premise from becoming a sequence of sexual anecdotes. Molly’s encounters matter because they are part of a larger attempt to reclaim agency, not because the show wants to score points for raunchiness. Nikki is not simply an audience surrogate reacting to Molly’s choices; she is the person who makes the choices emotionally legible.
Why the comedy and grief work together
Sexual candor without moral panic
The series treats consensual sexual exploration as a serious part of Molly’s self-knowledge. McNamara praises its nonjudgmental approach. Desire is neither presented as a cure nor reduced to a punchline, even when the situations themselves are comic. The humor comes from awkwardness, frank conversation and the collision between bodily desire and the social scripts people usually use to discuss serious illness.

Mortality without solemnity
Dying for Sex does not separate its jokes from its grief. Its title signals the tonal gamble: horny and heartbreaking are meant to coexist. McNamara calls the series “funny, heartbreaking, deeply humane and more than occasionally insightful as hell.” The comedy gives Molly room to remain a whole person rather than a symbol of cancer, while the impending loss keeps the sexual adventure from feeling weightless.
Where the series is less convincing
McNamara’s principal reservation is that the show can be too “perfect” to be perfect. In her reading, parts of the story smooth over the material complications that serious illness usually brings, particularly money, access to medical care and Steve’s position as a caregiver. That is a critical assessment of the drama’s construction, not an independently verified account of how those circumstances unfolded in Kochan’s life.

The concern is important because the series asks viewers to accept an unusually open space for reinvention at the exact moment when illness, logistics and dependence should be pressing hardest. When those pressures recede, Molly’s freedom can feel more designed than lived-in. The emotional performances still supply weight, but the world around them occasionally feels arranged to protect the show’s hopeful, liberating arc.
Performances and creators
Michelle Williams plays Molly’s volatility, curiosity and fear without reducing her to any one of them. Jenny Slate gives Nikki the warmth and comic timing that let the friendship absorb difficult material. Hulu credits Kim Rosenstock and Elizabeth Meriwether as creators and lists Rob Delaney, Jay Duplass and Kelvin Yu among the cast.

FX’s official tagline, “There’s no wrong way to feel better,” captures the show’s attitude toward Molly’s search for relief, though it should be read as marketing language rather than medical advice.

Verdict: should you watch Dying for Sex?
Yes—if you can handle a show that puts erotic self-discovery beside cancer, caregiving and grief without treating any of those subjects as forbidden. Its strongest achievement is making Molly and Nikki’s friendship as compelling as Molly’s sexual awakening. Its weakness is the occasional sense that financial, medical and caregiving realities have been polished away. Even with that qualification, the series earns its unusual description: it is genuinely heartbreaking and genuinely horny, often in the same scene.
