Yet the film’s songs, character choices and conspicuously artificial visuals rarely pull together into a convincing whole. Rachel Zegler gives it a genuine center; the movie around her keeps draining away the force of that performance.
What is Disney’s 2025 Snow White?
Disney calls the film a “live-action musical reimagining of the classic 1937 film.” Directed by Marc Webb and written by Erin Cressida Wilson, it stars Rachel Zegler as Snow White, Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen and Andrew Burnap as Jonathan. The film runs 109 minutes, is rated PG and opened in theaters on March 21, 2025, according to Disney’s official film listing.
Its central challenge is not simply whether to repeat the animated original. It is whether a new version can give Snow White a more active role while still making her story, romance and musical world feel like parts of the same film.
Does the story make Snow White more compelling?
The screenplay shifts the character toward an heir with a possible claim to leadership, rather than a princess whose story mainly turns on waiting for a prince. That change gives the film a useful direction, but the characterization does not consistently fulfill it. Snow White’s kindness remains the quality the story most clearly celebrates; her resolve and agency feel less fully developed than the premise suggests.

In his March 19, 2025 review for the Associated Press, Jake Coyle likewise read the film as moving away from the waiting-for-a-prince model, but argued that Snow White loses some of her gumption in the process. That is one critic’s interpretation, not a definitive account of the adaptation. The broader problem is visible in the film’s own balance: it gestures toward leadership without giving that ambition enough dramatic weight.
Do the performances and songs work?
Rachel Zegler gives the film its strongest anchor
Zegler brings warmth and vocal assurance to Snow White, making the character’s optimism feel sincere even when the script gives her little room to sharpen it into action. Rotten Tomatoes’ critic consensus, checked September 30, 2026, also singles out her performance while criticizing aspects of the adaptation and its style. An aggregator’s summary is a snapshot of its page at that time, not a verdict on what every viewer will think.

The supporting cast does not fully settle the tone
Gadot’s Evil Queen supplies a clear contrast to Zegler’s gentleness, but the film’s heightened fairy-tale mode does not always make their scenes feel part of a coherent emotional register. Burnap is among the principal cast, yet the story’s larger weakness is not a lack of recognizable performers; it is that the relationships and stakes do not consistently give them material with enough depth.
New songs and familiar numbers pull in different directions
Benj Pasek and Justin Paul wrote the original songs. Disney’s UK announcement describes a mix of new material and familiar songs, including “Waiting on a Wish,” “Heigh-Ho” and “Whistle While You Work” (Disney UK Press, June 4, 2025). The songs help keep the film connected to the earlier version, while the new material tries to give this Snow White her own voice. But the two approaches do not consistently build on each other: the familiar numbers carry memory and expectation, while the new songs have to do the harder work of expressing a revised character and story. The result is a musical that has memorable ingredients without a strong enough dramatic through-line.

Why do the visuals feel disconnected?
The most persistent visual problem is the seam between human performers and the computer-generated seven dwarfs. Coyle’s Associated Press review focused on the uncanny effect of placing the CGI characters alongside live-action actors. The issue is more than whether the effects look polished: when the dwarfs feel as if they belong to a different visual reality, scenes built around friendship and shared danger lose some immediacy.
The film’s broader style also has trouble supporting its themes. A story about kindness, courage and leadership needs a visual world that feels emotionally inhabited. Here, the artificial-looking characters and shifts in tone can make the fantasy feel assembled rather than lived in. That distance blunts the appeal of the film’s more sincere moments.

Critical response was mixed, and the audience picture was not identical. Rotten Tomatoes’ critic consensus, as checked September 30, 2026, praises Zegler but faults the adaptation’s treatment of its source and some stylistic choices; its audience summary is more positive about the songs and spirit (Rotten Tomatoes). Those summaries can change as the page updates and should not be treated as a permanent score or a stand-in for individual taste.
The Associated Press reported on March 23, 2025 that the film opened with an estimated $43 million domestically and $87.3 million worldwide, attributing the ticket estimates to the studio. AP also reported a production budget above $250 million, a 43% Rotten Tomatoes score at that opening-weekend point, and a B+ CinemaScore (Associated Press, March 23, 2025). These are dated figures, not current totals or proof that all viewers responded alike; the B+ CinemaScore in particular indicates a warmer opening-weekend audience reaction than the critical conversation alone might suggest.
Is Snow White worth watching?
It may be worth a look for viewers who are curious about Zegler’s performance, the updated take on Snow White’s role or the mix of new and familiar songs. But as a complete musical reimagining, it is less satisfying: its attempt to make the heroine a potential leader lacks consistent dramatic force, and the visual divide between human and CGI characters keeps tugging the viewer out of the fairy tale. The film has a worthwhile premise and a strong lead, but it does not make them add up to a persuasive whole.
Disney UK said the film began streaming exclusively on Disney+ in the UK on June 11, 2025. That is a historical UK release detail, not a guarantee of current availability elsewhere; streaming catalogs vary by territory and date. Disney Japan also lists Blu-ray, DVD and digital editions on its official home-video page, which is specific to that market.
