Germany’s poor pensioners

DW Documentary offers a journey across distant lands, presenting a brilliant and eclectic mix of award-winning films and reports that are always close to current affairs and international events. And one of their most recent documentaries could not be more timely: “Poverty in Old Age – The German Dilemma”.

The documentary exposes a distressing reality that is affecting countless German seniors. Through interviews with impoverished retirees, experts, and politicians, the film reveals the harsh situation of thousands of seniors who, like Herbert, struggle to make ends meet.  With a rate of 15%, the number of pensioners living at the poverty level is increasing drastically in Germany, the wealthiest country in Europe. Through this penetrating inquiry, DW Documentary takes on a crucial issue, contributing to the debate on how to address this escalating crisis.
