The headline refers to Saturday Night Live’s October 2, 2021 season premiere, hosted by Owen Wilson. In the sketch reported as “Star Trek: Ego Quest” and titled “Billionaire Star Trek” in the official clip, Wilson played Jeff Bezos on a space trip that turns into a contest of billionaire egos. Richard Branson appears as a rival, while Mikey Day plays Elon Musk as the spacecraft’s more heavily armed antagonist.
What happens in the sketch?
The parody borrows the language and look of Star Trek for a send-up of private spaceflight as celebrity spectacle. Bezos leads an eccentric crew on a recreational mission aboard a ship the sketch jokes looks phallic. The gag turns the spacecraft into a visual shorthand for ego and masculine status—not a serious claim about the real vehicle.
Branson then appears as Bezos’s competitor, and the encounter is framed less like a scientific expedition than a midlife-crisis contest between wealthy men. Musk arrives in a more overtly militarized, Star Trek-style craft and attacks Bezos’s ship with photon torpedoes. His “Prime objective” line combines the Star Trek “Prime Directive” with Amazon Prime.
The closing joke brings Amazon back into the picture. Bezos beams an Amazon delivery worker aboard to collect his package. When the worker asks to use the bathroom, Bezos hands him an empty bottle. It is a deliberately crude punchline, but it also ties the space-faring persona back to the delivery business that made Bezos widely recognizable.

Contemporary coverage described the sketch and its jokes; the SNL clip was titled “Billionaire Star Trek – SNL.”
Who played whom?
- Owen Wilson played Jeff Bezos.
- Luke Wilson played Bezos’s brother, Mark. The sketch’s deliberately forgetful introduction of him was part of the joke.
- Mikey Day played Elon Musk.
- Kenan Thompson played an Amazon delivery worker.
The crew also included characters representing people who flew with Bezos on Blue Origin’s 2021 New Shepard mission, including Wally Funk and Oliver Daemen. The sketch uses comic shorthand rather than aiming for realistic portraits of the real passengers. Branson appears as a character; the cited coverage does not identify his performer.

The real flights behind the billionaire-space-race joke
The timing made the premise legible. Richard Branson flew aboard Virgin Galactic’s VSS Unity on July 11, 2021. Nine days later, on July 20, Bezos flew aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard with his brother Mark, Wally Funk and Oliver Daemen. The consecutive high-profile trips helped news coverage frame private spaceflight as a billionaire race, although Branson publicly denied that he was competing directly with Bezos.

“First in space” claims need care. Branson was described at the time as the first billionaire to ride a rocket-powered vehicle built by his own company—not the first wealthy private citizen ever to reach space. The boundary itself also depends on definition: the FAA used 50 miles, while the Kármán Line is commonly placed at 100 km. These flights were suborbital journeys, not trips into orbit.

Why include Musk?
The three men were grouped together as prominent billionaire figures tied to private spaceflight, but their roles were not interchangeable. Bezos and Branson had just made highly publicized suborbital trips on vehicles operated by their own companies. Musk, the public face of SpaceX, represented a different dimension of the space industry and supplied the sketch with a recognizable third rival. He had also hosted SNL a few months earlier, adding an in-show reference point for viewers. The sketch does not suggest he had flown on the same kind of tourist mission. What the satire is taking aim at
The sketch’s central target is the way personal ambition, corporate identity and publicity can blur in billionaire spaceflight. Its spacecraft joke turns status signaling into anatomy; its Branson encounter makes the media’s “race” feel like a contest of vanity; and its Musk entrance scales the rivalry up into a Star Trek battle. The “Prime objective” pun and the delivery-worker ending bring that grand space imagery back to Amazon’s commercial brand and everyday logistics.
That is an interpretation of what the jokes do, not a documented statement of the writers’ single intended message. The sketch is entertainment satire, not a technical comparison of vehicles or a policy argument. It also does not delve into the more serious controversies surrounding Blue Origin at the time. Nor does the cited reporting establish that Bezos, Branson or Musk publicly reacted to the sketch.

Some of its references drew on real pop-culture history: Bezos had a cameo as an alien Starfleet officer in Star Trek Beyond; see GeekWire’s account of the cameo. But the skit’s spacecraft, attack and bathroom gag are inventions for comedy—not a factual account of the companies or their missions.
