Netflix has three separate language controls: the profile’s display language for menus, profile preferences for audio and subtitles, and the in-player selector for the title you are watching. Because these settings belong to individual profiles, changing one profile does not automatically change the others.
Change Netflix’s display language
The display-language setting changes menus, labels and other on-screen text. Use the instructions for your device type.
Smart TV, streaming player, cable box, Blu-ray player or game console
- Open Netflix and go to the profile-selection screen.
- Highlight the profile you want to change.
- Select the Edit pencil icon.
- Select Language, choose a language and select Done.
The change saves automatically. Netflix uses this same path for supported TV-connected devices; it does not publish separate language paths for Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast, PlayStation, Xbox or individual television brands. See Netflix’s language instructions.

- Open the Netflix app.
- Tap My Netflix in the lower-right corner.
- Tap the profile name at the top.
- Tap Manage Profiles and select the profile.
- Tap Display Language and choose a language.
The selection saves automatically.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Netflix and tap My Netflix.
- Tap the profile name at the top, then Manage Profiles.
- Select the profile.
- Tap Display Language and choose a language.
The selection saves automatically.
Web browser on Windows, Mac or Chromebook
- Open Netflix in a browser and go to the Account page.
- Select Profiles, then the profile you want to edit.
- Select Languages.
- Under display-language settings, choose Display Language.
- Select Save.
If the language does not change on a device, sign out of Netflix and sign back in. Netflix documents display-language changes through account settings rather than a separate Windows-app menu. The Windows app is supported on Windows 10 and later.

Set preferred audio and subtitle languages
These profile preferences help Netflix choose audio and subtitles automatically and can make additional language choices appear. They do not guarantee that every movie or episode includes those languages.
Android, iPhone or iPad
- Open Netflix and tap My Netflix.
- Tap the profile name, then Manage Profiles.
- Select the profile.
- Tap Audio & Subtitles and choose preferred audio and subtitle languages.
Your choices save automatically.
Web browser
- Open Netflix’s Account page.
- Select Profiles, then your profile.
- Select Languages.
- Choose preferred audio and subtitle languages and select Save.
TV or TV-connected device
- Start a movie or show.
- Pause playback and open the player controls at the bottom.
- Select Other.
- Choose languages for Audio and Subtitles.
Those choices save automatically. Netflix’s current TV guidance does not provide a separate profile-settings screen for these preferences.

Change language while watching a movie or show
Phone, tablet or computer
- Start playback.
- Tap or click the screen.
- Select Audio & Subtitles.
- Choose an available audio track or subtitle language.
Smart TV, streaming player, cable box, Blu-ray player or console
- Start playback.
- Press the remote or controller’s up or down arrow.
- Select Audio & Subtitles.
- Choose a language. If the choices appear along the bottom without that icon, select Other to see every option supplied for the title.
Apple TV
- Start playback.
- Swipe up or press the Apple TV remote’s up arrow.
- Select Audio & Subtitles.
- Choose a language.
These in-player controls affect the current title and are separate from the profile’s display language. Netflix’s playback guidance is at How to use subtitles, captions or choose audio language.
Why a language is missing
Netflix says language availability can vary by your location, profile preferences, title, device and content-licensing agreements. One season or episode may have different tracks from another. Some seasons offered before 2018 may not have the same language options, and tracks for weekly or rolling releases may appear only after localization is complete.

To browse Netflix’s catalog by language, use subtitle browsing or audio browsing. Netflix also recommends selecting the desired languages in the profile’s Audio and subtitle languages setting and saving the change. More detail is available in Netflix’s language-availability guidance.
Downloads can show fewer language choices
Downloaded movies and shows normally display only the two most relevant languages, even when streaming offers more. If you are on Wi-Fi and the title is downloaded:

- Delete the download.
- Start playback again.
- Open Audio & Subtitles.
Netflix says streaming playback may then reveal additional languages.

Kids profiles and language preferences
Audio and subtitle preferences usually are not saved when most Kids titles are watched from an adult profile. They are saved when the title is watched from a Kids profile.

If Netflix repeatedly resets the audio language, play a title rated Teens or above for two to three minutes. Netflix recommends this to save the preferred audio language for future viewing.
Fix unsupported-language and older-device errors
- Install every available Netflix app update.
- Restart the device and try again.
- If the device is older, try another supported device.
Netflix identifies outdated apps and older devices as the main causes of unsupported-language messages. Its app may not support subtitles in Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Romanian or Vietnamese on some devices manufactured before 2014; 2014 is a general guide, not a guarantee. Netflix also warns that service may no longer be available on some TVs and streaming devices made before 2015. See Netflix’s unsupported-language troubleshooting and device-support information.
United States catalog-filtering exception
In the United States, a profile set to English may show only titles with English audio or subtitles instead of every title in the U.S. catalog. Netflix lists English as the U.S. filtering language. To view titles regardless of available audio or subtitles, choose a profile language other than the country’s listed filtering language. Netflix explains this behavior at Why some titles may not appear.

Changing the setting on one profile does not change other profiles, and choosing a preferred language cannot override licensing, regional, title or device limitations.
