‘오는 9월 개관 예정’이라는 소식은 2021년의 발표다. 유튜브와 할리우드 파크가 함께 알린 YouTube Theater(유튜브 시어터)는 미국 캘리포니아주 잉글우드에 들어선 6,000석 규모의 공연장으로, 2021년 9월 문을 열었다. 현재는 공연과 행사를 위한 시설이자, 현장 경험을 유튜브 콘텐츠와 연결하려는 파트너십의 사례로 볼 수 있다.
유튜브 시어터는 공연장이다
유튜브 시어터는 크리에이터가 영상을 촬영하는 스튜디오가 아니다. 미국 캘리포니아주 잉글우드의 할리우드 파크 안에 자리한 관객 수용형 공연·행사장이다. 소파이 스타디움과 같은 복합 개발지에 있으며, 대표 수용 규모는 6,000석이다. 좌석 수는 행사별 배치에 따라 달라질 수 있다. 유튜브의 개관 발표와 할리우드 파크의 시설 소개가 이 규모와 위치를 설명한다.
이름에 유튜브가 들어가지만, 확인된 사실은 유튜브와 할리우드 파크가 협력해 만든 브랜드·시설 파트너십이다. 유튜브가 공연장을 단독 소유하거나 모든 행사를 직접 제작·편성한다고 단정할 근거는 공개 자료에 없다.
‘오는 9월’은 2021년의 표현
유튜브는 2021년 6월 말 공연장을 그해 9월 개관할 계획이라고 발표했다. 이후 8월 27일 공식 블로그에서 리본 커팅 행사를 알리며 첫 행사가 9월에 열릴 예정이라고 밝혔다. 할리우드 파크의 연혁은 실제 개관 시점을 2021년 9월로 기록한다. 따라서 과거 발표 제목의 ‘오는 9월’을 현재 일정처럼 읽어서는 안 된다. 확인된 자료만으로는 첫 공연의 정확한 날짜를 특정하기 어렵다.

유튜브와 할리우드 파크는 10년 파트너십을 맺었다고 발표했다. 다만 임대료, 수익 배분, 독점 여부 등 계약의 세부 재무·운영 조건은 공개 자료에서 확인되지 않는다.
콘서트부터 e스포츠·컨퍼런스까지
공식 발표와 시설 소개에서 제시한 행사 범위는 콘서트와 각종 공연뿐 아니라 코미디·스탠드업, 시상식, e스포츠 대회, 커뮤니티 행사, 컨퍼런스, 유튜브 크리에이터 관련 이벤트까지 포함한다. 즉 특정 장르 전용 공연장이라기보다 여러 종류의 라이브 행사를 열 수 있는 다목적 공간이다.

공연장에는 외부의 대형 디지털 유튜브 아이콘, 내부 디지털 월과 인터랙티브 화면 등 디지털 기능이 마련됐다. 유튜브는 공연장에 라이브스트리밍 인프라도 갖췄다고 설명했다. 이는 행사 콘텐츠를 현장 밖으로 확장할 수 있는 기반이지만, 모든 공연이 생중계되거나 전 세계에 무료로 공개된다는 뜻은 아니다. 실제 중계 여부와 접근 방식은 행사별로 달라질 수 있다.

유튜브가 밝힌 취지는 플랫폼에서 활동하는 아티스트와 크리에이터, 팬을 실제 공간에서 연결하는 것이다. 크리에이터에게는 팬 커뮤니티를 만나고 확장할 기회를, 관객에게는 온라인에서 보던 콘텐츠와 아티스트를 현장에서 경험할 기회를 제공하겠다는 구상이다. 디지털 화면에 행사와 크리에이터 관련 콘텐츠를 보여주고, 가능한 경우 스트리밍으로 현장 경험을 확장하는 방식도 이 방향에 들어맞는다.

이를 유튜브가 공연장 사업 전반에 진출했다는 뜻으로 과장하기보다는, 온라인 콘텐츠 플랫폼의 브랜드와 할리우드 파크의 오프라인 공연장 사업이 만난 사례로 이해하는 편이 정확하다. 유튜브는 디지털 콘텐츠와 팬층을 제공하는 이름과 연결성을 더하고, 공연장은 관객이 모이는 물리적 무대를 제공한다. 다만 각각의 행사 편성이나 제작 책임이 어떻게 나뉘는지는 공개된 자료만으로 일반화할 수 없다.
YouTube Theater와 YouTube Spaces는 다르다
두 이름 모두 크리에이터와 관련 있지만 공간의 목적은 다르다.

공연·코미디·e스포츠 등 개별 행사의 일정과 티켓 정보는 행사마다 다르므로, 공연장 이름만으로 현재 판매 중인 티켓이나 가격을 추정할 수 없다. 관람을 계획한다면 해당 행사의 공식 안내에서 날짜, 티켓 판매처, 입장 조건을 확인해야 한다. 대관료와 행사별 장비·중계 조건도 공개 자료만으로는 확정할 수 없다.
