Yes, Google adapted its Santa Tracker experience for the 2020 pandemic—but the shorthand that “Mr. and Mrs. Claus were practicing COVID safety” needs a little precision. Google’s Santa’s Village included a Present Drop game explicitly described as practice in social distancing. Google later confirmed that Santa wore a mask in both 2020 and 2021. Its available official text does not clearly establish that Mrs. Claus also wore a mask or took part in a separate safety exercise.
What changed in Google’s 2020 Santa Tracker?
Google’s 2020 Santa’s Village announcement described a holiday experience shaped by the unusual circumstances of the pandemic. Among its features was Present Drop, a game in which players helped Santa deliver presents by dropping them into chimneys. Google framed the activity as a way for Santa to practice deliveries while also practicing social distancing.
That is the clearest evidence behind the claim that Santa was practicing COVID precautions: the game turned avoiding close contact into part of the make-believe delivery routine. It was a playful feature in a family holiday experience, not a formal health-safety lesson.
What about Santa and Mrs. Claus?
Google’s announcement also featured an image captioned “Santa and Mrs. Claus overseeing preparations.” That supports the claim that both characters appeared in the pandemic-era North Pole setting. But the official text available for the announcement does not say that Mrs. Claus wore a mask, or describe a separate activity in which both characters practiced safety measures.

The mask detail is clearer in a 2021 retrospective by Google’s Santa Tracker team. Google said Santa wore a mask “last year and this year”—referring to 2020 and 2021—to protect himself and others from COVID-19. That confirms masked-Santa imagery, but it does not establish that Mrs. Claus wore one too.
A holiday feature, not medical guidance
Google presented the 2020 changes in the context of its seasonal entertainment and the care people showed for one another during a difficult year. Present Drop made social distancing part of the story; it was not a health-information tool or a claim that Santa had been medically certified as safe to travel. Google addressed COVID-19 information separately through its broader COVID-19 response initiatives.

Why you may not find the same feature today
The COVID-themed elements were tied to the 2020 holiday season. Google’s current Santa Tracker page does not, by itself, document that year’s games or show that they remain available. Seasonal pages and interactive features can change, and older content may be difficult to access outside the holiday period. Google says Santa Tracker began in 2004 and has evolved over time, adding games, maps and other experiences; an earlier version was also published as open-source software.

The precise takeaway
Google’s Santa Tracker really did reflect pandemic precautions in 2020: Present Drop was described as social-distancing practice, and Google later confirmed that Santa wore a mask that year. The available official wording is not enough to say that both Santa and Mrs. Claus wore masks or participated in a specific COVID-safety exercise together.
