You can watch free TV on a smart TV in four main ways: use an antenna for local broadcasts, open a free service already built into the TV, install free ad-supported streaming apps, or borrow films through a participating library. For a documentary-focused watchlist, library services such as Kanopy or Hoopla may be especially useful; for live local news and network programming, start with an antenna. Most streaming options require internet and show ads, and a TV’s compatibility depends on its model and region.
Choose the right kind of free TV
“Free” usually means there is no monthly subscription. It does not necessarily mean no equipment cost, no advertising, or permanent access to a particular title. These options serve different purposes:

Many free live-streaming services are called FAST services, short for free ad-supported streaming television. They offer a scheduled channel lineup over the internet rather than conventional broadcast reception. Streaming services, catalogs, and compatible devices vary by country, model, and licensing arrangements.
Use an antenna for local channels—even without internet
An HDTV antenna can receive local over-the-air broadcasts, potentially including ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, PBS, and other stations available at your address. The programming has no monthly TV subscription fee, but you may need to buy an antenna. Reception depends on distance from transmitters, terrain, obstructions, building materials, antenna placement, and the stations’ signals.

Connect and scan for channels
- Connect the antenna’s coaxial cable to the TV port marked ANT IN, RF IN, or Antenna/Cable In.
- If the antenna is amplified, connect its USB cable or power adapter as directed by its manufacturer.
- Open the TV’s settings or channel setup. Look for Channels, Broadcast, TV, or Live TV.
- Choose Channel Scan, Auto Program, Auto Tuning, Auto Search, or a similar option.
- Select Antenna, Air, or Broadcast, rather than Cable, unless the TV is connected to a cable feed.
- Start the scan. When it finishes, open the TV’s guide or switch the input to TV or Antenna.
Menu names differ by brand and model. On Roku TV, Roku’s antenna instructions list an HDTV antenna and coaxial cable, and its integrated Live TV features also use an internet connection. The broadcast signal itself does not require internet: Roku antenna and cable TV setup.
If the antenna scan finds few or no channels
- Move the antenna higher or closer to a window, and try orienting it toward nearby broadcast transmitters.
- Rescan after moving it. Confirm that the TV is set to Antenna or Air, not Cable.
- Check that an amplifier has power. Try connecting the antenna directly to the TV instead of through a splitter, and test a shorter coaxial cable if practical.
- Move it away from large metal objects and nearby electronics. Walls, concrete, insulation, hills, and dense buildings can obstruct reception.
- Check local station availability and coverage before buying another antenna. An amplifier or a high advertised range cannot restore a signal blocked by terrain or a building.
An antenna is for local broadcasts, not Netflix, premium cable networks, or an unlimited on-demand movie library. If you have no internet, it is the main option here for live TV; internet streaming apps will not work offline.
Check the free channels already on your TV
Some smart-TV platforms include free internet channels or a live guide. These services are convenient when you want to start watching without adding another device, but availability varies by model, software, and region.

In the U.S., Google says its built-in Freeplay channels do not require an app installation, sign-up, or subscription. Press Home and look for Live, Free, or Google TV Freeplay, then select a channel. This no-sign-up detail applies to the built-in Freeplay channels, not every provider or paid service shown in Google TV’s Live tab. Google’s guide also lists free providers such as Plex, Pluto TV, and Tubi, alongside paid options. For Freeplay setup and current software guidance, see Google TV Freeplay help.
If Freeplay does not appear, check for TV software and Google TV Home app updates. Google TV’s Basic Mode can allow use of a connected tuner or antenna without connected features, but app installation, search, Google services, and other online features are unavailable in that mode. Samsung TV Plus
On a compatible Samsung TV, press Home or Smart Hub and open Samsung TV Plus, Live TV, or the guide. Samsung describes TV Plus as providing free live channels and on-demand movies and shows. Its U.S. page says support includes Samsung Smart TVs released after 2016; check your exact model and region, since availability and account requirements for smart features may vary: Samsung TV Plus.
Roku TV and The Roku Channel
On a Roku TV, press Home and look for The Roku Channel, Free, or Live TV. Roku says the channel offers free movies, shows, and live channels, and supported Roku TVs can combine antenna channels with free streaming channels in a guide. Roku’s free-content instructions and app installation steps are at Roku: Watch free movies and TV shows. The Roku Channel is also available on some non-Roku devices, including compatible Samsung TVs, Fire TV devices, and Google TV devices; check Roku’s availability information for device details. Content availability varies, as noted on Roku’s channel page.
Other TV platforms
For LG webOS, Vizio SmartCast, Sony TVs, Fire TV Edition TVs, and other platforms, open the TV’s app store and search for the service. Check compatibility with your exact model before assuming an app is supported. Menu labels and app availability are not universal; an app available on one brand or model may be absent from another.
Install free streaming apps for movies and more live channels
Connect the TV to the internet, open its app store, and search for the official app by name. Install it, open its Free, Movies, or Live section, and choose a title marked Free, Watch Free, or Free with ads. A free account may be useful or required for some functions; it is not the same as a paid subscription.

For Roku TV, the documented app path is Home → Streaming Store, then browse Top Free & TV or search for the app, select it, and choose Add app. Other Roku devices and TV platforms may use different labels.

Expect advertisements and rotating catalogs. A service may offer some titles at no charge while presenting rentals, purchases, premium channels, or subscriptions nearby. Do not assume a particular movie will remain available, or that an app supported on one TV will work on yours.

If your public library or educational institution participates, Kanopy and Hoopla may provide films and television programs through library access. Their catalogs can include documentaries, independent and international films, classics, and educational programming. They are not generally live-channel services, and access is not universal.
- Visit your library’s website and search for Kanopy, Hoopla, or streaming video.
- Confirm that your library participates and review its eligibility rules.
- Activate an account using the information requested by the service and library.
- Check the service’s official device information and your TV’s app store for a compatible app.
- Review borrowing limits, title restrictions, and viewing expiration dates before choosing a film.
Participation, device support, catalog, and borrowing policies differ by library and service. Check your own library’s current terms rather than assuming access or unlimited viewing.
Know when a “free” listing comes with a catch
Live guides and app home screens can mix no-cost channels with paid subscriptions, rentals, or trials. Google TV’s Live tab, for example, can show paid services alongside free providers. Before starting playback or entering billing details, check the offer:
- Look for labels such as Free, Watch free, or Free with ads.
- A padlock, subscription label, rental price, or purchase prompt means the title may not be included at no cost.
- A service may ask for a free account for watch history, personalization, or parental controls. That does not automatically mean a paid plan is required.
- If a screen asks for a credit card, pause and read the checkout and renewal terms. It may be a paid add-on, rental, or trial that renews automatically.
- Do not enter payment information simply because an app or title is described as free. Continue only if you understand and intend to accept the terms.
A free trial is temporary access, not a lasting free-TV method. Also avoid unauthorized streaming sites, piracy apps, illegal IPTV services, and unknown sideloaded packages. They can expose viewers to phishing, intrusive ads, malware, account theft, unreliable playback, and copyright risks. Use official apps from the TV’s app store and authorized services.

Fix common free-TV problems
An app is missing from the TV’s store
- Update the TV software, then restart the TV and search again.
- Check the TV’s country or region setting and confirm that the service supports your exact model and location.
- Check the service’s official supported-device information. A discontinued or older TV platform may no longer support the app.
- Use the TV browser only if the service officially supports browser playback. Otherwise, a compatible HDMI streaming device may add app support without replacing the TV.
A channel guide includes paid channels
Use the guide’s free labels and provider details rather than assuming every listing is included. If a channel opens a subscription prompt or displays a price, back out unless you intend to pay. Some platform guides aggregate free providers and paid services in the same view.
A movie is no longer free
Streaming rights change. A movie may be free with ads on one service, available only as a rental on another, included through a library, or unavailable in your region. Search more than one legitimate service instead of relying on an old listing.
Antenna reception changes from room to room
Walls, insulation, concrete, metal, antenna direction, splitters, and cable length can all affect reception. Move the antenna, test it directly at the TV, and rescan before assuming you need a different antenna.
Streaming video buffers
- Try another app to see whether the issue affects one service or the whole connection.
- Restart the TV and router.
- If practical, move the router closer, use Ethernet if supported, or pause other high-bandwidth activity.
- Update the app and TV software, and lower video quality if the app offers that setting.
- Check whether the service is experiencing an outage.
An antenna broadcast does not buffer. If antenna viewing is steady but app playback stalls, troubleshoot the internet-streaming connection.

For local news and broadcast programming
Start by checking which stations are available at your address, then try an antenna and scan for channels. Add a free live-streaming app for channels that are not available over the air, but do not treat streaming apps as a guaranteed substitute for local broadcast stations.

For documentaries and independent films
Check whether your library offers Kanopy or Hoopla, then add one or more free streaming apps such as Tubi or YouTube for a broader rotating selection. Confirm eligibility and availability through your library and the relevant app.
For children or shared household viewing
Review each service’s content ratings and parental controls. Google TV documents Freeplay controls under Settings → Accounts & Profiles → select profile → Content restrictions → Google TV channels; the exact wording and availability can differ by device and software version.
For a rural home or unreliable internet
An antenna can work without internet, though terrain and distance may make reception difficult. Internet-dependent live channels and on-demand apps need a working connection and can buffer when it is unreliable.
For an older TV
If its app store no longer supports the services you want, an external streaming device connected through HDMI may be a practical alternative to replacing the television. It adds hardware, a remote, and potentially another account; it will not improve antenna reception unless the setup also includes an appropriate tuner.
