Letterboxd’s website and mobile app experienced an outage on November 6, 2025. The disruption began around 7:20 a.m. ET, and access returned later that day. Letterboxd acknowledged the outage; a simultaneous Cloudflare incident appeared to be a possible factor, but a precise Letterboxd-specific cause was not confirmed. This is a retrospective account of that incident, not a report of a new outage.
What happened to Letterboxd?
On November 6, users reported that Letterboxd’s website and app were failing. The site returned a “web server is down” message for some visitors, while the app could stall on its animated logo. People were temporarily unable to reach features such as watchlists, film logs, collections and rankings.
The incident appeared broad rather than confined to one device or account. However, the public outage reports available at the time were not a complete measurement of users worldwide. Downdetector counts submissions from users; its reports indicate a pattern, not a confirmed tally of everyone affected.

That figure refers to user reports, not 700 verified affected users.

Timeline: when Letterboxd went down and came back
- Around 7:20 a.m. ET: Reports of access problems began to rise.
- During the disruption: Users encountered website errors and app loading failures. Letterboxd acknowledged that its site and app were experiencing an outage and said the services would be back soon.
- Later on November 6: Cloudflare reported a wider issue affecting multiple customers and said a fix had been implemented and was being monitored.
- By about 7:21 p.m. UTC: TechRadar reported that the Letterboxd website was loading again and Downdetector reports had dropped below 100.
Those times describe reported events, not a universal start and end for every user. The evidence supports an outage lasting several hours; it does not establish that every app, region or account recovered at the same moment as the website.
Was Cloudflare the cause?
The timing and errors suggested a connection to a Cloudflare incident affecting multiple services. Cloudflare reportedly described accidental rate limiting and said it had applied a fix. Letterboxd’s own acknowledgement confirmed an outage, but did not give a technical diagnosis. The available reporting does not prove exactly which Letterboxd systems failed or establish Cloudflare as the sole cause.

What is established: Letterboxd said its website and app were affected. What was reported: Cloudflare was dealing with a concurrent multi-customer issue. What remains uncertain: the precise Letterboxd-specific failure and the extent to which Cloudflare contributed. A provider’s status page can help identify a wider incident, but it cannot by itself confirm the cause of a particular service’s outage.

Did the outage delete Letterboxd accounts or film logs?
The evidence described temporary unavailability, not deleted data, corrupted watchlists or compromised accounts. No data loss or account compromise was established in the reporting reviewed. That is not a guarantee about every individual account; it means the outage reports do not support claims that users’ data was erased or that accounts were hacked.
If a list or log looks incomplete while a service is recovering, wait and check again before making changes based on a partial page. A failed connection is not, by itself, evidence that the underlying account data is gone.

- Compare the app and website. If both fail, a service-wide problem is more plausible; if only one fails, the issue may be specific to the app, browser or part of the service.
- Check for a wider pattern. Look at Letterboxd’s official updates and user reports on Downdetector. Treat the latter as a signal, not an official service-health check or a count of affected people.
- Check a relevant provider status page. If the error appears to involve infrastructure, Cloudflare’s page may show a simultaneous incident. A green status there does not rule out a Letterboxd problem.
- During a confirmed outage, avoid unnecessary resets. Reinstalling the app or changing account credentials is unlikely to fix a provider-side disruption and may add avoidable complications.
- After service returns, try basic recovery steps. Force-close and reopen the app, switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data, and install an app update if one is available. Sign out and back in only once the service is clearly operating again.
- Keep a temporary record. If you are watching something and cannot log it, note the title or take a screenshot so you can add it later.
A VPN, DNS change or cache-clearing step is not a guaranteed fix for a service-side outage. Changing several things at once can make it harder to tell whether Letterboxd has recovered or your local connection is the problem.
Temporary alternatives for film tracking
If you need to record what you watched while Letterboxd is unavailable, a notes app, spreadsheet or screenshot is the simplest temporary backup. It will not provide Letterboxd’s film metadata or social features, but it can preserve a short list for later entry.
- IMDb is useful for film information, cast and crew, ratings and discovery, but it is not a direct replacement for Letterboxd’s diary-centered social experience.
- Trakt emphasizes watchlists and viewing history across films and television, with a different community and review experience.
These are alternatives for specific tasks, not equivalent copies of Letterboxd. If the problem is a broader outage, switching services will not repair Letterboxd or recover a failed connection to it.
Was Letterboxd offering compensation?
TechRadar noted that Letterboxd was running a 20% Pro and Patron promotion from November 4 to 7, 2025. That was a historical promotion, not a current offer. The evidence available here does not establish that Letterboxd extended it, issued refunds or provided other compensation because of the outage. A paid plan also cannot prevent a disruption caused by service or network problems.
