VLC is the best free choice for playing an IPTV stream; Kodi with IPTV Simple Client is better if you want a channel guide; and Desktop Telly is a dedicated desktop option that advertises both M3U and Xtream Codes support. There is no single best app for every Windows or Mac user, and the apps differ substantially in how they handle playlists, guides and provider logins.
An IPTV player is software for viewing streams; it normally does not include channels or a subscription. You need a lawful source, such as an M3U/M3U8 playlist or provider login. An electronic program guide (EPG) is usually separate data, often provided as an XMLTV URL. Availability and features can change, so use official download sources and confirm that a client supports your exact login method before entering credentials.

How to read the table: “Advertised” means the developer’s site says it supports the platform or feature; it is not an independent test result. “Unclear” or “not confirmed” is not the same as “unsupported.” No app should be assumed to handle Xtream Codes, EPG, VOD, recording or DRM merely because it can open an M3U file.

1. VLC Media Player — best free playback option
VLC is the straightforward choice when you want to test or play a stream without setting up a full TV interface. VideoLAN lists Windows, macOS and Apple-silicon downloads, as well as Windows ARM64, and identifies version 3.0.23 on its download page. VLC is free and open source. It is a useful fallback for checking whether a provider’s stream works, but its playlist controls are not a substitute for a polished channel grid, EPG, favorites or provider account manager.

Download VLC from VideoLAN. For a network playlist, open Media → Open Network Stream on Windows, paste the M3U/M3U8 URL and choose Play. On macOS, use VLC’s network-stream command; menu wording can vary by version. A URL that opens a list may let you select streams through the playlist controls. If your provider gives only server, username and password fields, VLC may not offer the dedicated login workflow you expect.
VLC can record a playing stream using playback controls, but that is not a full DVR promise: stream restrictions, DRM, and provider behavior can prevent recording. For a conventional channel guide, choose Kodi or a suitable dedicated client instead.
2. Kodi with IPTV Simple Client — best customizable TV interface
Kodi is the stronger choice if you want IPTV alongside a media-center interface and are willing to configure an add-on. Kodi’s official IPTV Simple Client page documents M3U playlists, live TV, radio channels and EPG data; it lists Windows and macOS for both Intel and Apple silicon. This is the most clearly documented guide-oriented choice in this shortlist.

Kodi takes more setup than VLC. If channels appear but guide data does not, check that the XMLTV URL is valid, channel identifiers match, and the time-zone settings are right. A very large playlist can also slow imports; use provider categories or a smaller filtered playlist where possible. Recording depends on the PVR setup, stream and storage, so do not assume the add-on turns every provider feed into a working DVR.
3. Desktop Telly — dedicated desktop contender
Desktop Telly’s official site advertises Windows, macOS and Linux versions, with M3U and Xtream Codes API support. That makes it a relevant option if you want an IPTV-oriented desktop client and your provider supplies either of those formats. Check Desktop Telly’s official site for current installers and terms.
The available documentation does not establish every feature a buyer might care about, such as the current price, EPG behavior, VOD, recording, catch-up, or how credentials are stored. Confirm those details on the developer’s current site before paying or entering sensitive login information. On a Mac, also confirm the build is appropriate for your processor and whether it is signed and notarized.

Third-party coverage describes MyIPTV Player as a Windows-oriented Store app with playlist and EPG functions. That may suit a Windows user who prefers an app-store installation over a media center, but this is not enough to treat its current availability, supported Windows versions, maintenance, Xtream login, or recording as confirmed. Check the Microsoft Store listing and developer details before installing. No reliable current Mac version is established here, so do not select it on the assumption that it runs natively on macOS.

5. IPTV Smarters desktop — familiar workflow, uncertain distribution
Third-party guides commonly describe Smarters-branded clients with live TV, VOD-style organization and M3U or Xtream-style workflows. However, names such as “Smarters Pro,” “Smarters Player,” “Smarters Lite” and “Smarters Expert” can refer to different products, and the current official Windows/macOS distribution and licensing are not reliably established. Treat it as an option to investigate only if you can identify the actual developer and obtain the build from an official source or recognized store. Avoid mirrors and reseller pages; do not enter provider credentials into an app whose origin you cannot verify.
6. IINA — a Mac-native general media alternative
IINA is an open-source, Mac-oriented media player that may work for simple playback needs. It is not equivalent to an IPTV organizer: do not expect the full provider login, channel categories, EPG grid, favorites, recording and VOD shelf that a dedicated client may offer. Choose it when you value a Mac-focused player and your playlist workflow is simple, not when you need a complete cable-style interface.
7. Perfect Player — only after checking current desktop support
Perfect Player appears in older IPTV recommendations, but current Windows and macOS distribution and maintenance are unclear in the available evidence. Before downloading, find a current official developer source and confirm the exact desktop build, operating-system compatibility and playlist features. An old listing or third-party installer is not proof that a supported Mac or Windows version is available today.

8. IPTVnator — an open-source project to evaluate carefully
IPTVnator is a desktop IPTV project worth investigating if you are comfortable assessing project releases and installation provenance yourself. Current release quality, platform support, code signing and installation behavior need confirmation. Use the project’s verified repository or official distribution source, and inspect its current documentation rather than assuming that an older guide describes the latest build.

9. OTTPlayer — verify that it has a desktop build for your system
OTTPlayer is associated with playlist management across devices, but current native Windows and Mac availability is unclear. It may be more relevant on another supported device than as a computer app. Confirm that the official service currently offers a desktop client for your operating system before treating it as a Windows/Mac recommendation.
10. Plex or Jellyfin — for self-hosted libraries, not a simple provider login
Plex and Jellyfin are better considered by people already running a self-hosted media setup. They offer broader library and playback ecosystems, but they are not automatically replacements for an IPTV player: live TV may require a tuner, middleware, plug-ins or other infrastructure. If your goal is simply to paste a provider’s M3U or Xtream credentials and browse channels, start with VLC, Kodi or a dedicated client that documents your login method.

- One M3U URL, no guide: Start with VLC. It is free, widely available and useful for isolating stream problems.
- Guide data and channel groups: Kodi with IPTV Simple Client is the best-documented option here for M3U plus EPG.
- Direct Xtream Codes login: Desktop Telly explicitly advertises Xtream Codes API support. Confirm the current app’s exact login flow and terms before use.
- Windows Store installation: Investigate MyIPTV Player only after confirming its current Store listing and compatibility.
- Mac playback: VLC has an Apple-silicon build; Kodi’s add-on lists Apple-silicon and Intel macOS. IINA is another Mac-oriented player, but not a complete IPTV dashboard.
- Recording: Verify the specific app, stream and provider terms. A player’s ability to save a playing stream is not proof of a dependable DVR feature.
- Older computer or huge playlist: Begin with a smaller playlist or provider category and a simple player. Large lists can slow startup, search and guide loading; no benchmark here establishes a universal performance winner.
- Self-hosted video library: Consider Plex or Jellyfin if you want a media-server setup, not merely an IPTV login screen.
Windows has more IPTV-specific desktop options in the available comparisons, but their current status varies. Mac users should check whether a download is Apple-silicon native, Intel-only (and therefore potentially reliant on Rosetta), or universal. Avoid treating “opens a 4K URL” as a guarantee of smooth 4K playback or correct HDR: codec, bitrate, decoder, hardware, network and DRM all matter.

- Identify the input type. Ask whether your provider offers an M3U/M3U8 file or URL, a direct Xtream Codes login (server, username and password), an XMLTV guide URL, or another portal method. M3U support does not prove direct Xtream login support.
- Confirm the operating-system build. Use the official developer site, a recognized app store or a verified project repository. For Mac, check Intel versus Apple silicon and signing/notarization; for Windows, check the supported version and architecture.
- Check the feature you need, not a generic “IPTV” label. EPG grid, VOD, catch-up, recording, favorites, search and multi-view are separate capabilities. Confirm each one for the desktop edition and your stream type.
- Protect provider credentials. A player is not automatically trustworthy because its name is familiar. Prefer a clearly identified developer and avoid entering account details into unofficial builds.
- Understand the source and rights. The player’s legality and the content’s licensing are different questions. Use services authorized to distribute the channels in your location, and avoid suspicious “lifetime” offers, copied premium feeds and cracked installers.
Troubleshooting: find where playback is failing
Playlist opens, but no channels play
Check that the URL is current and returns an M3U playlist (often beginning with #EXTM3U). Test one direct stream URL if available. Confirm account status, connection limits and any provider requirements. Try VLC as a diagnostic; if a direct stream also fails there, the issue may be the source, credentials, network or DRM rather than the interface.

Channels play, but the guide is blank
EPG data may be missing, expired or incompatible. Verify the XMLTV URL, check that guide channel IDs correspond to playlist IDs, and review time-zone settings. Some players cannot display a conventional guide even when a playlist contains channel names.
Playback buffers or video will not decode
Test the network and a lower-bitrate stream, and consider Wi-Fi interference, provider congestion, simultaneous-connection limits, codec support and hardware decoding. A VPN can change routing but may also worsen speed; it is not a guaranteed buffering fix. If audio plays but video does not, test another stream or player and review hardware-acceleration settings.
The playlist is very large
Ask for a smaller regional or category playlist, or filter it locally if you know how. Thousands of entries can slow import, search and EPG parsing, particularly on older hardware.
macOS blocks an installer
Re-download from the verified developer or project source and confirm the build is current and appropriate for your Mac. Do not bypass a security warning blindly for an app from an unknown mirror.
