HBO Max is not listed as an officially available standalone streaming service in Canada in the availability information checked on August 16, 2026. For Canadian viewers, Crave is the supported local route to many HBO and Max titles. It is a Canadian licensing service, not a Canadian version of the HBO Max app, so its catalogue may differ from the U.S. service.
Is HBO Max available in Canada in 2026?
Canada does not appear on HBO Max’s official list of available markets, checked August 16, 2026. The service says it anticipates expanding to additional regions in 2026 and beyond, but that statement does not confirm a Canadian launch or provide a launch date. HBO Max’s availability and regional help information is the place to check for changes.
The names can be confusing: the service has used both “HBO Max” and “Max” branding at different times, while current official support pages use HBO Max. Canadian announcements refer to HBO and Max programming, but the local consumer service for much of that programming is Crave.
The official Canadian way to watch HBO and Max programming
Crave is the principal official Canadian destination for HBO and Max titles. Bell Media’s 2023 content pact covered HBO Originals, Max Originals, Warner Bros. films, DC content and Wizarding World programming. In October 2024, Bell said an expanded agreement would keep Crave the exclusive Canadian home of HBO and Max content for multiple years. Bell’s 2023 announcement and its 2024 partnership update describe the arrangements.

“Exclusive Canadian home” describes Canadian licensing and distribution; it does not mean that Crave carries every title in the U.S. HBO Max catalogue. Canadian streaming rights are negotiated separately. Titles, seasons, release timing, language options and picture quality can therefore differ by service and change over time. Crave also carries Canadian programming and other entertainment, with English- and French-language content.
Choosing a Crave plan
Bell’s November 2025 announcement listed Crave Standard With Ads starting at C$11.99 per month and Crave Premium at C$22. These are published price signals from that announcement, not a guarantee of today’s checkout price; taxes, plan names and features may change. Check Crave’s current plans and checkout before subscribing. Bell’s announcement is available at its Crave relaunch page.

How to sign up for Crave directly in Canada
- Go to crave.ca and select the current subscription or sign-up option.
- Review the Canadian plans, price, included features and billing terms shown at checkout.
- Create a Crave account or sign in, then provide an accepted payment method and complete the purchase.
- Install Crave on a supported device, or open the web player, and sign in with the same account.
- Search for the HBO or Max title you want. If it does not appear, use the missing-title checks below rather than assuming the app is broken.
Before confirming payment, check the total including applicable taxes, how the subscription is billed and how cancellation works. If you already subscribe through an app store or TV provider, avoid starting a second direct subscription until you have checked which account controls your existing access.

Watch Crave on a TV, phone, computer or game console
Bell lists Crave access on the web, iOS and Android devices, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, select LG and Samsung smart TVs, PlayStation, Roku, Xbox and through participating providers. Device support depends on the model, operating system and current app availability. See Bell’s Crave platform information for the supported options.
- Computer: Open Crave in a supported web browser and sign in.
- Phone or tablet: Install the Crave app from the device’s official app store and sign in.
- Smart TV or streaming device: Find Crave in the platform’s official app store, install it and sign in. If the app is unavailable on your model, use a supported streaming player or cast from a compatible device where available.
- PlayStation or Xbox: Check the console’s app store for Crave and confirm compatibility for your console generation.
If an app does not appear, check Bell’s current device information, update the TV firmware and look for a supported casting or streaming-device option. Avoid sideloading unofficial apps from unknown sources.
Already receive Crave through a provider?
Some viewers get Crave through a participating TV, internet or mobile provider. If that may apply to you, check your package before paying Crave directly.

- Confirm with your provider whether your package includes Crave or offers it as an add-on.
- Open the provider’s account or activation page and activate Crave if required.
- Follow the provider’s instructions to link access to the Crave app, using provider-linked credentials or an activation code if requested.
- If access fails, contact the provider first. Provider-billed subscriptions and viewing entitlements are generally managed through the provider.
Does Crave have the same shows as HBO Max?
No one-to-one catalogue match is established. Crave carries HBO and Max programming licensed for Canada, along with other content; Canadian rights can differ from U.S. rights. A title may have a different Canadian release date, only some seasons may be available, or the selection of audio, subtitles and resolution may vary.
Bell’s May 2026 Crave programming overview and its earlier partnership announcement refer to titles including The Last of Us, House of the Dragon, The White Lotus, The Penguin and The Sympathizer. Those examples do not guarantee that a particular title, season or episode remains available now. Check the live catalogue on Crave; see Bell’s May 2026 overview for its programming examples.
Can you use a VPN to watch U.S. HBO Max in Canada?
A VPN is not the official Canadian subscription route. HBO Max’s troubleshooting guidance says VPNs, proxies and anonymization services can cause an IP address to be blocked and advises users to disable them. Even if a connection works at one point, a VPN does not resolve possible U.S. payment, app-store, account or content-rights restrictions, and no particular VPN can be guaranteed to work. Service terms and licensing restrictions may apply; review the current terms rather than assuming a VPN is permitted.

If the app reports a regional availability error, turn off any VPN, proxy or anonymization service and try again. For supported access to HBO and Max programming while in Canada, use Crave.

Travel is different from trying to open a Canadian subscription. HBO Max says an existing subscriber can stream while travelling to a market where the service is available. Availability and ratings can depend on location. For a trip to a place where the service is unavailable, HBO Max recommends downloading titles before travel where downloads are available. Downloads are for offline viewing under the service’s rules; they do not create permanent access in Canada or change account eligibility. See HBO Max’s regional and travel guidance.

What to check when a title or app is missing
A show or film does not appear in Crave
- Search the exact title, alternate spellings and any French-language listing.
- Check whether you are looking for a current season, an older library season, a film or a special; rights can differ across them.
- Look for the Canadian release date and confirm whether your plan includes the title.
- If your access is provider-linked, verify that the provider entitlement is active.
- Try signing out and back in, updating the app, or checking the title in Crave’s web player.
- Canadian rights may be temporary or title-specific. Do not conclude a title is unavailable in Canada merely because it is missing from the U.S. HBO Max app, or assume the reverse.
A region error appears in HBO Max
Confirm your actual location, turn off VPN or proxy tools, then restart the app and device. HBO Max’s official regional troubleshooting guidance specifically identifies VPNs and proxies as possible causes of IP blocking. A Canadian resident seeking local access should use Crave.

Crave will not open on your television
Check the current supported-device list, update the television’s operating system and app, and try a supported streaming player, game console or compatible casting option if available. Support can vary by model and software version.
You are charged but cannot watch
Check whether your subscription is billed directly, through an app store or through a provider. Confirm the account signed into the app matches the paying account. If provider-billed access is missing, contact the provider; for a direct Crave subscription, contact Crave support with your receipt and account details.
