Google TV Freeplay added 15 live channels ahead of Christmas 2024, bringing its reported U.S. lineup to 171 at the time. The additions included three holiday-themed Xumo channels, scripted shows, lifestyle programming and sports-branded channels. They were free to watch, but ad-supported—and that December 2024 count is a historical snapshot, not a promise about today’s guide.
The 15 channels reported as new
Contemporary reports in December 2024 identified the following additions to Google TV Freeplay. The list was reported by 9to5Google and BGR; it was not presented as a single formal Google announcement naming all 15.

The holiday theme applied most directly to the three Xumo channels. The rest broadened the lineup with scripted television, reality and lifestyle programming, classic TV, and sports or outdoor content. Their presence does not mean every title or live event associated with a brand is available.
Holiday music was updated separately
Reports also noted seasonal programming on three Stingray music channels: Stingray Greatest Holiday Hits, Stingray Soul Storm Christmas and Stingray Hot Country Christmas. These were described as holiday programming updates, not as three additional new Freeplay channels. Seasonal content may not remain after the holidays.

What Google TV Freeplay is—and what “free” means
Freeplay is Google TV’s built-in, ad-supported live-TV offering. For its built-in channels, Google says viewers do not need a separate subscription, sign-up or app installation. Free means no subscription charge for those channels; it does not mean ad-free viewing. Google says advertising may be personalized through device or account settings. See Google’s live-TV guidance.
Freeplay is not YouTube TV, cable, or a complete on-demand library. Google TV’s Live tab can also bring together channels and services from outside providers—including Pluto TV, Plex, Tubi and Haystack News. Those partner offerings may require installing an app, linking an account or meeting the provider’s own subscription terms. Don’t assume every channel shown in the Live tab is a built-in Freeplay channel.

Where and how to watch
The December 2024 additions were for the U.S. lineup. Google’s help pages describe Freeplay as available on eligible Google TV devices in the United States; availability is not worldwide, and Android TV devices should not be assumed to have the same interface or lineup. Check Google’s current availability information.

If Freeplay does not appear, check for an update to the Google TV Home app as well.
- Open the Live tab.
- Look for Built-In Channels, Freeplay channels or the Google TV Freeplay app, depending on the device’s interface.
- Browse the guide and select a channel to start watching. Google says channels may also appear in recommendations; exact labels and placement can vary by device and software version.
Google’s Google TV live-TV help page covers software and channel access. Where supported, channels can be marked as favorites from the Live tab or Freeplay guide using the star control.

Is the 171-channel lineup still there?
“171 channels” describes the reported Freeplay total as of December 24, 2024—not the current number and not necessarily every free or paid channel surfaced in Google TV’s broader Live guide. In February 2025, 9to5Google reported that nine channels had been removed and the reported Freeplay total had fallen to 162. Google’s channels and providers can change, and seasonal channels may be temporary. Check the guide on your device for current availability rather than relying on the old count.
If you cannot find one of the 15 channels, possible reasons include being outside the U.S., a seasonal or later-removed channel, a changed guide layout, an outdated device app, or a difference in provider availability. If built-in channels are missing, check your region and updates first, then look in both Live and recommendations. A channel’s absence does not necessarily mean all of Freeplay is unavailable.

What to expect from the sports-branded channels
UFC, Big 12 Studios, Unbeaten, Waypoint TV and PursuitUP are channel names in the reported lineup, not guarantees of access to every fight, game or event associated with those brands. Some live sports content elsewhere in Google TV may require a paid service or other entitlement; Google notes this for services such as YouTube TV in its sports viewing guidance. Freeplay is best understood as an extra source of ad-supported programming, not a substitute for a comprehensive sports package.

Why the addition mattered
For U.S. Google TV owners, the built-in channels offered a no-subscription way to put seasonal movies, Christmas programming and other linear TV on the screen without an antenna or separate app. The trade-offs are advertising, a changing lineup and a channel-based schedule rather than guaranteed on-demand access. The 15 additions were a useful expansion at the time, but viewers should use the current guide—not the December 2024 count—to see what remains available.
