Apple Music now has a prompt-based playlist feature: Playlist Playground, introduced in beta in 2026. That makes the old claim that Apple lacks Spotify-style generative playlists out of date. But the feature is limited, and Apple still has room to make it more controllable, explainable and useful. Spotify’s newer Prompted Playlist offers a helpful benchmark.
These tools use prompts to select and arrange existing catalog tracks; they are not, by themselves, tools for generating new songs. The real question is no longer whether Apple should support the idea, but whether it can turn a basic prompt into a playlist listeners can shape and trust.

Why prompt-based playlists appeal
Traditional recommendations offer mixes, stations and suggested songs based largely on listening history. Prompt-based playlisting starts somewhere different: with the situation a listener has in mind. Someone may know they want “soft electronic music for reading on a rainy Sunday” without knowing which artists, genres or tracks to search for.

Instead of searching song by song, the listener describes a listening experience, gets a selection from the service’s catalog, then adjusts it. That can be useful for a specific activity, social setting, mood, era or blend of familiar songs and discoveries. It is also distinct from conversational refinement—giving follow-up instructions to change a result—and from AI-generated audio, which creates new recordings or performances.

Spotify’s tools: AI Playlist and Prompted Playlist
Spotify introduced AI Playlist in beta for Premium users in April 2024. Its basic idea is simple: enter a natural-language prompt and Spotify generates a playlist using its catalog and personalization. Spotify later expanded the beta in English to Premium users on Android and iOS in the United States, Canada, Ireland and New Zealand. The initial feature is not guaranteed to handle every kind of request: Spotify warned that prompts about non-music subjects such as current events or specific brands might not produce useful results. Spotify’s launch announcement and regional expansion notice describe that rollout.
Spotify’s newer Prompted Playlist goes further. Spotify says eligible Premium mobile users can describe a vibe, scenario or mood; set rules; edit a prompt after generation; and schedule a playlist to refresh daily or weekly. The service can also show short explanations for why some songs or podcast episodes fit. The feature remains a beta: Spotify documents English-only access, usage limits and market restrictions. Shared prompts are for supported test markets, and sharing one does not personalize a playlist for a Free user. Details can change, so check Spotify’s current support page for eligibility and availability.
For example, a listener might try “energetic 1990s alternative for a two-hour road trip,” “mostly familiar indie rock with a few less obvious discoveries,” or “music that feels like a science-fiction film’s final scene.” Those are prompts, not promised outcomes: catalog, account, market, language and the feature’s changing beta behavior can all affect results.

Apple added Playlist Playground in beta in 2026. Apple’s instructions describe a prompt-based playlist generator for moods, genres, activities and eras. On iPhone, the documented path is Library → New Playlist → Create New Playlist; enter a description in the prompt field, then review the generated list. Apple’s iPhone guide says it produces 25 suggested tracks and a custom title. Users can change the title, reorder tracks, add suggested songs, refine the query and save the playlist. The feature is not universally available. Apple documents it as a beta for Apple Music subscribers aged 13 or older, in the United States and in English, with Sync Library enabled. Apple’s March 31, 2026 support page describes the workflow on iPhone, iPad and Android, but that does not establish identical support on every device or Android version. Availability and features may vary by region. If the option is missing, check your region and app language, confirm your subscription, and make sure Sync Library is on.
Playlist Playground is evidence that Apple now supports the basic idea, not proof that it has matched every part of Spotify’s evolving toolset. Nor do the cited Apple support pages establish which model or processing architecture powers it, whether it requires Apple Intelligence hardware, or how prompt data is handled. Those details should not be inferred from the feature’s use of AI.
What Apple could do better
Apple’s opportunity is to build around its own strengths rather than simply copy a prompt box. Apple Music combines a personal library, catalog metadata, editorial playlists, lyrics, credits and integration across Apple devices. Siri already supports requests for music by mood, activity, genre or similarity, and can add music to playlists. That is a useful foundation, though a voice command is not the same as generating and editing a complete playlist. Apple’s Siri guide documents those controls.

A useful prompt should handle combinations such as “upbeat but not aggressive,” “mostly familiar songs, with five discoveries,” or “start calm and become more energetic.” It should let listeners specify constraints such as clean lyrics or a maximum track length, without pretending every constraint is currently supported.
- Make editing precise. Listeners should be able to preserve the opening tracks and rebuild the rest, replace a few mismatches, or ask for more guitars and fewer synths. Editing a prompt is helpful; direct, track-level control is better.
- Explain choices. A short reason—matching the requested era, a favorite artist, a mood or a desire for variety—would make recommendations easier to assess. Spotify’s Prompted Playlist explanations are a relevant product benchmark, not proof that its reasoning is always correct.
- Offer meaningful exclusions. Listeners may want to omit an artist, explicit tracks, remixes, live versions, covers or recently played songs. A good interface should show which exclusions it can honor and when catalog availability prevents it.
- Let people choose the source. Apple could make it clear whether a playlist draws from the personal library, the full Apple Music catalog, downloads, favorites, or a selected album or playlist. That distinction matters to listeners who want offline playback or a library-centered mix.
- Make refreshes predictable. A living playlist could update daily or weekly while retaining rules, avoiding repeats for a chosen period and keeping a steady balance between familiar music and discovery. Spotify’s scheduled refresh option shows one direction this could take.
- Connect the experience across Apple services. Voice requests, playlist editing and playback should work naturally across supported devices, with clear controls over what personal listening context is used.
Apple also uses AI in other music features, but those are not interchangeable with prompt-based playlisting. AutoMix, for example, analyzes audio features to create transitions using time stretching and beat matching; it is a playback transition feature, not a natural-language playlist generator. The trade-offs Apple should take seriously
A fluent prompt interface can make a playlist seem more intentional than it is. Mood words are subjective, tracks may fit only loosely, and a requested energy arc can fall apart in the listening order. Popularity signals or uneven catalog metadata may steer a system toward familiar hits instead of meaningful discoveries. Licensing differences can also leave requested songs unavailable in a listener’s country.
There is a risk of repetition and a discovery bubble: a system that leans heavily on past behavior may give people more of what they already know. That can suit a comfort playlist but undermine exploration. Manual playlist-making also has value; selecting and sequencing songs can be the point, not a chore to automate.
Privacy deserves scrutiny too. A prompt can reveal mood, activity or circumstances, while listening history can be personal. Apple’s support information cited here does not settle what data Playlist Playground processes or where processing occurs. Apple should explain those choices plainly rather than relying on assumptions about its brand or devices.

These features primarily select and arrange recordings already in a catalog. The separate issue of AI-generated or deceptive catalog content requires its own safeguards. Spotify said it removed more than 75 million spammy tracks in the preceding 12 months in a September 2025 announcement; that is Spotify’s attributed figure, not an estimate of the total share of AI-made music across the industry. Which service makes sense?
For a listener who prioritizes prompt-based experimentation and changing playlist tools, Spotify is the more established reference point in this comparison, with AI Playlist and the more rule-oriented Prompted Playlist. Both are beta-era features with eligibility, language and market limits; check the current terms before choosing a subscription for access.
Apple Music is a natural fit for people already invested in its devices, personal library and music ecosystem, and Playlist Playground brings it into the prompt-playlist category. But the U.S.-only, English beta and Sync Library requirement narrow who can use it. Outside the supported market, Siri’s music commands and Apple Music’s conventional recommendations are alternatives, though they do not provide the same playlist-generation workflow.
Neither service should be judged just by whether it has an AI button. The useful questions are whether it understands the request, produces a coherent sequence, exposes meaningful controls, finds worthwhile music and treats personal context responsibly. Apple has added the feature many listeners wanted. Its next challenge is to make it distinctly useful—not merely available.
