Disney+ introduced channel-like continuous playlists in the U.S., but not a full cable-style lineup of Disney-owned networks. Disney announced the feature in 2024 under the name “continuous playlists”: scheduled streams of selected programming, including ABC News Live and curated entertainment. They offer an easier, lean-back way to watch, but standalone Disney+ does not replace local TV, a broad live-sports package, or Hulu + Live TV.
What Disney reported—and what it confirmed
In April 2024, a report attributed to The Information said Disney was considering scheduled streams inside Disney+. It described a concept resembling the linear channels on free ad-supported services such as Pluto TV and Tubi, with possible franchise-focused streams such as Star Wars or Marvel. Those examples were reported possibilities, not a confirmed lineup: the report did not establish the final channels, launch date, country availability, plan eligibility, ad policy, or whether Disney would call them channels. The report also did not confirm that Disney+ would carry the conventional feeds of networks such as Disney Channel or ABC.

Disney’s official announcement followed on August 6, 2024. It used the term continuous playlists and said the U.S. rollout would begin September 4. The initial offer for all U.S. subscribers was ABC News Live and a preschool-focused playlist. Disney also announced four more curated playlists for Premium subscribers later that fall: Seasonal Content, Epic Stories, Throwbacks, and Real Life. Disney’s announcement described these as a way to combine live and on-demand viewing, with playlists refreshed over time.

The 2024 announcement establishes what Disney said it would roll out then, not a guarantee that every playlist, title, or plan arrangement remains unchanged today.

What “channels” means on Disney+
A continuous playlist lets you tune in and watch what is currently playing rather than choosing a specific title from the on-demand catalog. The appeal is convenience: start a stream and let the programming run. The trade-off is control. A playlist is not a complete catalog in a user-selected order, and its schedule or included titles may change.
Calling these streams “live channels” can be misleading if it suggests conventional television. Disney’s announcement did not promise that standalone Disney+ would provide a guide to every Disney-owned linear network, local broadcast station, or cable channel. It did not announce local ABC affiliates, full ESPN network feeds, a broad channel bundle, or cloud DVR as part of the playlists.

What programming was announced?
- ABC News Live: Disney described it as a 24/7 streaming news service with newscasts, breaking news, live events, and special reports. It is not the same as a local ABC station’s live feed or the entire ABC network schedule. Disney’s corporate summary likewise identifies it as a streaming news channel.
- Preschool playlist: Disney cited shows including Sofia the First, The Lion Guard, Puppy Dog Pals, and Minnie’s Bow-Toons as examples. These were representative titles, not a permanent schedule guarantee.
- Epic Stories: A curated selection drawing on Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars programming.
- Throwbacks: Nostalgic pop-culture programming.
- Real Life: Documentaries, biopics, and true stories—particularly relevant to viewers looking for factual and documentary-style content.
- Seasonal Content: Programming gathered around seasonal themes.
The four themed playlists were initially announced for Premium subscribers. Because plan terms, interfaces, and availability can change, treat that as the original rollout arrangement rather than a definitive statement of every account’s current access. The confirmed announcement was specific to the United States; it should not be assumed to describe the lineup in Canada, the U.K., Australia, or other markets.
Disney+ playlists, Hulu + Live TV, and free streaming channels
Disney+ playlists suit viewers who want curated Disney-related entertainment or background viewing. Hulu + Live TV is the more relevant Disney-owned option for someone seeking a cable-like bundle with a broader set of live channels. Its lineup and local-station availability can vary by market, so check the current offer for your location. Disney’s U.S. site lists a Hulu + Live TV package with Disney+ and ESPN Select at $89.99 per month; confirm the package contents and final price at signup. ABC News Live should not be confused with live access to a local ABC affiliate. Likewise, access to ESPN Select or other ESPN programming through a bundle does not automatically mean access to every traditional ESPN network or every live sports right. A Hulu hub or selected Hulu content in Disney+ is not the same thing as the full Hulu + Live TV service.
For viewers who mainly want free, ad-supported channel-style streams, services such as Pluto TV, Tubi, and The Roku Channel are alternatives to compare. They do not provide the same Disney+ catalog or franchise selection, and their lineups and availability differ. Disney+ playlists, by contrast, are part of a paid subscription.

U.S. price and advertising snapshot
Disney’s U.S. site currently lists Disney+ With Ads at $11.99 per month and Disney+ Premium at $18.99 per month or $189.99 per year. These are U.S. prices; offers, taxes, billing arrangements, and prices in other countries may differ. Check Disney+’s signup page for the current offer before subscribing.
Premium does not necessarily mean that every live or linear stream is commercial-free. Disney says selected live and linear content may contain ads even on Premium. That is separate from the ad experience for much of the on-demand catalog, so do not assume that a “No Ads” plan removes every commercial from live news, sports, or other linear programming.

Who should choose Disney+ for channel-style viewing?
- A good fit: You already want Disney+ on demand and like the option of starting a curated stream; you watch Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, preschool programming, or ABC News Live; or you want light background viewing without choosing a title each time.
- Not enough on its own: You need local ABC, CBS, NBC, or FOX stations; many conventional cable networks; cloud DVR; comprehensive live sports; or a guaranteed feed of a particular Disney-owned network. Compare Hulu + Live TV or another live-TV provider for those needs, checking the local lineup and sports rights before you pay.
How to check what your account currently includes
Availability and app layouts can change, so verify in your own account instead of relying on a menu path from an older guide:
- Open Disney+ on the device or browser you use.
- Look on the home screen for a live, playlist, or continuously playing section.
- Check whether ABC News Live or curated playlists appear under your account.
- Open the listing to confirm its current programming and any schedule details.
- If you do not see a feature, check your country, subscription plan, and app version. Device support can vary; a missing tile alone does not prove that a playlist has been discontinued.
Disney announced this feature for U.S. subscribers, and exact placement and eligibility may differ across countries, plans, devices, and app versions.
