YouTube’s TV app can now show Google Family Group members in its “Who’s Watching?” account picker. The profiles are generally shortcuts—not accounts already signed in—so each person normally has to authenticate with their own Google Account before using YouTube under that profile. The change was reported rolling out to Android TV devices on March 10, 2026; Google’s current help documentation now describes the feature for the YouTube app on TVs.
What changed in YouTube’s TV account picker?
Previously, a household member who wanted to use their own YouTube account on a shared TV generally had to add it manually. With the newer experience, the TV may automatically display profiles for people in the Google Family Group associated with the account signed in on the device. Google describes this as a feature for shared household devices; its TV account and privacy help page explains how the profiles work.
The first widely reported rollout was for YouTube on Android TV, including set-top boxes and Chromecast-type Google TV devices. 9to5Google reported the change on March 10, 2026, noting that it had been expanding over the preceding week. Availability may differ by device and app version. Google’s broader documentation refers to the YouTube app on TVs, but menu labels and controls are not necessarily identical across Android TV, Google TV, smart-TV apps, streaming devices, and game consoles.

A visible name or avatar does not mean that person’s watch history has been opened up to everyone using the TV. It means the app is surfacing the person’s family-group profile as a sign-in option. The change can make identities more visible on a shared screen, but the profile itself is not proof that the person is signed in.

Does YouTube automatically sign family members in?
Usually, no. Google says these profiles are normally displayed as signed out. Selecting one generally starts a sign-in flow for that person’s own Google Account; it does not hand them the account holder’s signed-in session. Google notes an exception for relevant TV experiences when an account does not have a password, so “never signs anyone in automatically” would be too absolute.
The picker may show a family member’s name and profile image, sometimes with a muted or gray appearance, and offer a sign-in route. That can include a QR code or activation page, with remote-based credential entry as another option. Merely seeing the profile does not mean the person has accepted a Premium invitation or that their Premium benefits are active.
How a family member signs in
If the family member’s profile appears on the “Who’s Watching?” screen:

- Select that profile.
- Choose the sign-in option shown by the TV.
- Scan the QR code or open the activation address displayed on screen, then complete authentication with that person’s Google Account. If those options are unavailable or do not work, enter the account details using the remote.
Google’s TV sign-in instructions cover QR-code and activation-page sign-in, account switching, and signing in with a remote. If YouTube is already open under another account, open the left navigation, select the profile picture at the top, go to Accounts, then choose the family member’s profile or Add account. Follow the TV’s prompts to finish.
For phone-assisted setup, Google advises that the phone and TV be on the same Wi-Fi network. If the QR or activation flow fails, try it again, then use the remote-entry option if available. Confirm that the right Google Account is being used and that the person remains in the family group.
What “family member” means—and what it does not
The profiles are tied to a Google Family Group; YouTube Premium Family is one benefit that can be shared through an eligible group, not necessarily the reason every profile appears. The family manager can share a Premium family plan with up to five other household members. Google’s family-plan rules require members to live in the same household as the manager. Google says an electronic check-in confirms that household requirement every 30 days.

To receive Premium benefits, a person must be using the invited Google Account and have completed the family-group joining steps. A profile appearing in the TV picker does not establish that those conditions are met. If the person can sign in but lacks Premium benefits, check that they accepted the invitation, are using the invited account, and meet the household eligibility rules. Google may pause or suspend family access if it cannot confirm the household requirement; see its family-plan eligibility help.
Supervised accounts and YouTube Kids may follow different paths from a standard adult account. Google documents separate options for children’s supervised experiences, so do not assume every member will see an identical full YouTube profile.

If you do not want these signed-out shortcuts on a particular screen, use the TV’s opt-out control. Select a signed-out family profile or open the account-management controls and look for wording such as Remove signed-out family members, Hide family-member profiles, or a setting to turn off family-group profiles. Google says the preference is device-specific. Exact wording and placement can vary, so consult the YouTube app’s on-screen account settings if the label differs.

This only removes or hides the profiles on that TV. It does not remove someone from the Google Family Group or cancel their Premium access elsewhere. Conversely, removing someone from the group or family plan is a broader account change that may affect other shared Google services. Only the family manager can invite or remove members from the YouTube family plan. Use that option only if the goal is to end the person’s family membership—not simply to tidy the TV’s picker.
Shared-screen privacy controls
The convenience has a visibility trade-off: people in the room may see family members’ names and profile images, and a visitor could learn who belongs to the household’s Google family group. Google says family members’ names, photos, and email addresses are shared within the group. A visible profile also gives someone a route to begin sign-in, even though it does not generally authenticate them by itself. Consider hiding profiles on a communal TV if that visibility is unwelcome.
- Account lock: YouTube offers a four-digit code to protect an account on a shared TV. Google says this is device-specific and is not a replacement for the Google Account password.
- Parent code: Depending on the device experience, a code can be required before viewers access certain accounts, watch while signed out, or remove accounts. See YouTube’s TV account and parent-code help.
- Guest or signed-out viewing: Visitors can watch without signing into their own account. Signed-out viewing does not affect the signed-in account’s recommendations. Check the TV’s controls, since available options vary.
- Device-level opt-out: Turn off the family-profile display on the TV without changing the family subscription.
If a profile is missing or something is wrong
The family member does not appear
The rollout may not have reached that device, the TV’s app may not have refreshed its account state, or the signed-in account may not be the one associated with the family group. The person may also not be a member of that group, or the device may not support the same experience. Update the YouTube app if an update is available, restart the TV or streaming device, and confirm the correct account is signed in. There is no verified manual setting that forces the profile-discovery feature to appear. In the meantime, use Add account to sign in manually.
The profile appears, but activation fails
Retry the QR-code or activation-page flow. Check that the phone and TV share a Wi-Fi network for phone-assisted setup, or enter the credentials with the remote. Make sure the family member is using their own Google Account and remains in the family group. If sign-in succeeds but Premium does not, verify that the person accepted the family invitation and meets the same-household requirement.
You want to remove someone permanently
Use the TV’s hide or remove option for a device-only change. Contact the family manager to remove a person from the plan or group only when the intention is to end shared membership and its associated benefits.
