Yes, some Netflix plans became more expensive in the United States in January 2025—but not all of them. Standard with ads rose from $6.99 to $7.99 per month, and Premium rose from $22.99 to $24.99. The ad-free Standard plan stayed at $15.49. Netflix raised U.S. prices again in 2026, so those later prices should not be confused with the 2025 change.
Netflix’s U.S. prices before and after the January 2025 increase
Netflix announced the changes on January 21, 2025. The table shows the monthly U.S. prices around that increase; taxes, promotions, and third-party packages can change what a subscriber actually pays.

The annual figures assume a full year at the listed monthly price and exclude taxes. Netflix confirmed the $7.99 U.S. ad-supported price after the change in its January 2025 earnings-call transcript.

- Premium subscribers faced a $2 monthly increase, or $24 over a full year.
- Standard ad-free subscribers did not pay more because of this January 2025 change.
- Basic plan customers and prospective subscribers faced a separate plan-availability issue: Netflix discontinued Basic for new or returning customers. Older articles or account references may still mention it.
New members generally saw the new price when signing up. For existing members, Netflix says it sends an email and an in-service notice about a price change one month before the higher price is charged. The date it appears on a bill can therefore depend on the subscriber’s billing cycle. If Netflix is billed through a mobile carrier, internet provider, or other partner, that provider may handle notices and billing. Promotional prices may continue until the offer’s terms say they end. Why did Netflix raise prices?
Netflix’s stated rationale was to keep investing in films, series, games, and live programming, and to adjust prices as it adds content and product features. Executives have described evaluating whether the service is delivering more value, including by looking at member behavior and engagement. Netflix’s Q1 2025 shareholder letter also discussed refining plans and pricing to improve monetization and fund future service improvements.
That is the company’s explanation, not proof that every subscriber received a new feature when the price changed. The January increase did not automatically add a specific new feature to each affected tier. Netflix framed pricing in terms of the broader service and its continuing investment; whether that value is worth the higher bill depends on what and how often a household watches.

The features below describe Netflix’s current U.S. plans, not features newly added in January 2025. Netflix’s plan information lists these differences:

The ad-supported plan is the least expensive direct U.S. option, but it comes with commercials and some titles may be unavailable because of licensing restrictions. It may suit viewers who prioritize a lower bill, mainly watch in Full HD, and can live with those limits. Standard is the middle ground for people who want ad-free viewing and do not need 4K or more than two simultaneous streams. Premium is most defensible for households that will use its 4K/HDR picture, four simultaneous streams, or larger download allowance.

Account sharing is a separate charge
Netflix’s extra-member option is not part of the January 2025 base-plan increase. It is a separate cost for eligible subscribers who want to add someone who does not live in the household, and the price depends on the plan and market. Netflix’s current U.S. help page lists extra members at $7.99 with ads or $9.99 without ads; Standard permits one extra member and Premium up to two. Those are current figures, not 2025 prices. If an account’s total cost rose because of an extra-member slot, distinguish that charge from the subscription’s base price.
What Netflix costs now in the U.S.
As of August 18, 2026, Netflix lists U.S. monthly prices of $8.99 for Standard with ads, $19.99 for Standard, and $26.99 for Premium. These are later prices, following a separate U.S. increase in March 2026; they are not the prices Netflix charged after the January 2025 increase. The current plan page also says taxes may apply and notes that package pricing or eligibility can differ.

Prices are not universal. Netflix says plans and prices vary by country and can change or be tested over time. The U.S. figures above should not be applied to subscribers elsewhere; consult Netflix or the billing partner for the country and account in question. Netflix’s 2026 SEC filing also describes country-level variation in plan pricing.

- Choose Standard with ads if minimizing the monthly price matters most, you accept ads and possible title exclusions, and two simultaneous streams are enough.
- Choose Standard if you want ad-free 1080p viewing for up to two devices at once but would not use Premium’s 4K or four-stream allowance.
- Choose Premium if your household regularly watches on a 4K/HDR screen, needs up to four simultaneous streams, or benefits from downloads on more devices.
- Consider pausing your subscription by cancelling if you only watch a few releases each year, the catalog no longer earns its recurring cost, or you already pay for several services. Rotating subscriptions can make sense when you can resubscribe later without losing meaningful value.
Before changing plans, check the billing date, any promotional terms, and whether a third party manages the account. A carrier, cable, or internet package may include Netflix or offer an upgrade path; the effective price and rules can differ from direct billing. Netflix says members can change plans, but partner-billed accounts may need changes through the provider. Compare the full bill, including taxes and add-ons, rather than just the advertised base price. Netflix said in its Q1 2025 shareholder letter that price adjustments in large markets were performing in line with expectations; that is the company’s assessment, not a guarantee about how individual subscribers responded.
