Chromecast was not broadly down during Super Bowl LIX on February 9, 2025. Reports pointed instead to a problem with the way Tubi’s dedicated Super Bowl stream was launched: some viewers could select a Chromecast, but the game kept playing on their phone instead of transferring to the TV. That was an apparent Tubi event-stream casting issue, not evidence of a system-wide Google Cast outage.
What happened when viewers tried to cast Tubi’s Super Bowl stream?
Tubi offered the game through a dedicated event experience in its mobile app. Contemporary reporting described viewers choosing a Chromecast but finding that the stream continued on the phone rather than appearing on the television. Some ordinary Tubi programming could still be cast, which made the event’s failure especially confusing.
The distinction is important: the reports concerned casting Tubi’s Super Bowl stream from the app, not Tubi being entirely unavailable or every Chromecast failing. 9to5Google’s report on the incident attributed the problem to the special event playback path, which appeared not to work with Tubi’s ordinary casting flow. That is an explanation based on reported behavior, not a published engineering postmortem from Google or Tubi.
Why normal casting and the event stream could behave differently
An app can support Cast for its regular catalogue without every live event or special playback experience using the same route. In this case, standard Tubi viewing used the app’s usual streaming workflow, while the Super Bowl was promoted through a dedicated homepage control. The event path apparently did not hand playback off to Chromecast in the same way.

That can look like a Chromecast problem even when the device is discoverable and other apps work. “Chromecast is down” might mean a device has lost power, a phone cannot discover it, one app cannot hand off a video, a stream is failing, or a TV is on the wrong HDMI input. Those are different failure points, and they call for different fixes.
How to tell whether the problem is Chromecast or one stream
- Try a known-working Cast-enabled app. Cast a video from YouTube or another app you have used successfully. If it reaches the TV, that is a useful sign that the Cast connection is working; it is not a universal outage test.
- Try ordinary Tubi content. If a regular Tubi program casts but the Super Bowl stream does not, the failure is more likely specific to the event stream or its app workflow than to Chromecast generally.
- Check whether other apps can see the device. If none can find the Chromecast, investigate the phone’s Wi-Fi connection, device discovery, power and setup rather than focusing only on Tubi.
- Separate a black screen from a failed handoff. A TV showing no picture or signal may involve power, HDMI input or the streaming device. A video that simply continues on the phone points to a different kind of problem.
This sequence helps narrow down the likely layer; it cannot establish the status of every Chromecast or network.

What viewers could use instead
- Open Tubi on the TV or streaming device. A native Tubi app on a supported platform bypasses the phone-to-TV casting route. Contemporary reporting listed platforms including Roku, Android TV or Google TV, and Apple TV as alternatives. Availability can vary by region, device model and software version, so check the app store on the device you have.
- Use another authorized live-TV service that supports casting. YouTube TV was reported as working with Chromecast and other Cast devices during the event. That report does not guarantee service or compatibility for every account, location or device.
- Connect a computer to the TV with HDMI. If a compatible native app is unavailable, a direct wired connection can avoid the mobile Cast handoff. It still depends on having the right computer, cable and available TV input.
For a one-off event, checking for a native app on equipment you already own is usually a more sensible first move than buying a new streaming device. Replacing Chromecast would not necessarily fix an event stream that does not support the casting route being used.
When ordinary Chromecast troubleshooting makes sense
If several Cast-enabled apps cannot find or connect to the device, use Google’s Chromecast troubleshooting flow. It covers setup, app casting, “No Cast Devices Found” and network problems. Check that the phone and Chromecast are on the same Wi-Fi network, and confirm the device appears in Google Home. A guest network or router setting that isolates devices can also prevent discovery.

If the TV reports a black screen or no signal, check that the Chromecast has power and that the TV is set to the correct HDMI input. Google’s black-screen and no-signal guidance includes rebooting the device by unplugging its power cable for about one minute.
These steps address device, network or display problems. They may not help when Chromecast works with other apps but a particular live stream does not hand off. In that situation, switch to a supported native app or another authorized viewing method instead of factory-resetting a device that otherwise works.

A historical incident, not a current outage notice
Super Bowl LIX took place on February 9, 2025. The casting reports describe that event and should not be read as a notice that Chromecast is currently down or that Tubi’s present-day app behaves the same way. The narrow, evidence-backed conclusion is that some viewers could not cast Tubi’s dedicated Super Bowl stream through the mobile app, while the available reporting did not indicate a broad Chromecast outage.
