You can’t record directly to an Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD: it has no built-in DVR or general-purpose recording button. To save live TV, use the cloud DVR in a compatible provider app such as YouTube TV or Sling. The recording stays with that service—not on the Apple TV. For Apple TV+ shows, use the on-demand library instead of recording.
What “record on Apple TV” can mean
Apple TV can refer to the streaming device, the Apple TV app, or the Apple TV+ subscription. None is a universal DVR that records any program playing on the screen. The device streams shows and live channels through apps; recording, when available, is handled by the TV provider. Apple’s TV provider guide explains how to connect provider services, while features and availability vary by provider and region.
- Live TV: Use the channel or live-TV provider’s DVR feature, if its Apple TV app and plan offer one.
- Apple TV+: Find the program in the on-demand library and stream it while you have access.
- Local antenna channels: Add a separate tuner and DVR system; Apple TV can be the playback screen, not the receiver or recorder.
- A permanent video file: Apple TV is not designed to export recordings as files. Protected streams may be blocked or restricted from capture.
How to record live TV through an Apple TV app
- Install your live-TV provider’s app from the Apple TV App Store and sign in.
- Find the live channel, program, movie, game, or event in that app.
- Open its details or playback controls and choose the provider’s recording option. It may be called Record, Add to Library, or DVR.
- If offered, choose whether to record one airing, a series, or a team or event. Check the choice: a series setting may include future airings or reruns.
- Later, open that same provider app’s Library, DVR, or Recordings area.
The provider controls the buttons, supported channels, storage, expiration, and subscription requirements. Recordings usually stay in the provider’s account for playback there; they do not become video files in Apple TV storage or a shared library across apps.
Record on YouTube TV
- Open the YouTube TV app on Apple TV and find a show, movie, sports team, or event.
- Select the Add button beside the program.
- Open Library to find and watch the resulting recordings.
YouTube TV describes its cloud DVR as having unlimited storage. Adding a program generally saves current and upcoming airings to the Library; it does not create a local video file. See YouTube TV’s recording instructions for service rules and exceptions.

If you add a program after it has started, the recording begins from the time you added it. A later full airing may provide the complete program. Some sports content has special rules—for example, YouTube TV says NFL RedZone should be added as a program rather than recorded as an individual game. The service’s mobile download option is separate and is not a way to store a recording on Apple TV.
Record on Sling TV
- Open the Sling TV app on Apple TV and select a live or upcoming program.
- Choose Record. If the app offers a series option, select it to record episodes as they become available.
- To watch later, open the DVR tab and choose Recordings.
Sling’s published help currently lists 50 hours of DVR storage with a subscription and an Unlimited DVR add-on for $5 per month. Its Freestream accounts have a separate 10-hour allocation with a 30-day expiration period; subscriber recordings generally expire after nine months. These are Sling-specific terms, not Apple TV limits, and prices and policies can change. Check Sling’s DVR help and DVR page for current details.
Use a cable or satellite provider’s DVR
If you already subscribe to cable, satellite, or a regional TV provider, install its Apple TV app and sign in. Browse the provider’s live guide or search for a program, then use its recording command if available. Find the result in that provider’s DVR, Library, or Recordings section.

Some apps provide cloud DVR; others only stream channels or on-demand shows. If your provider’s recordings live on a physical cable box, they may not appear in its Apple TV app. The app may be able to schedule or play only recordings supported by that provider’s system. Provider sign-in on Apple TV is under Settings → Profiles and Accounts → TV Provider → Sign In; this sign-in does not itself add DVR features. Apple’s provider support page notes that services and availability vary by provider and region.

Do you need to record Apple TV+ shows?
Usually not. Apple TV+ programs are available on demand in the Apple TV app: find the title and play it from its page. Access depends on your subscription or other entitlement, and the Apple TV app may also show third-party subscriptions, rentals, or purchases that are not included with Apple TV+. Availability varies by country and service. See the Apple TV app guide.
If you need offline viewing, look for a download option in the relevant service’s official app on a supported device. Downloading is different from recording, and it does not turn Apple TV into a device that stores shows for offline playback.
Record free antenna TV while watching on Apple TV
Apple TV alone cannot tune in or record over-the-air broadcasts. A typical antenna DVR setup uses an antenna and a compatible network tuner or computer-based tuner, plus storage and sometimes a program-guide service. A compatible app then streams live channels and recordings to Apple TV. Check that the exact tuner, playback app, formats, and guide service support your region before buying; this is a separate DVR system, not an Apple TV feature.

Recording may be unavailable because the app or channel has no DVR feature, your plan does not include it, the program is on demand rather than a recordable live airing, or content rights restrict recording. The feature may also be unavailable in your region, or you may be signed into the wrong account.

- Search for the program inside the live-TV provider app—not only in Apple’s TV app.
- Check your plan and the provider’s channel-specific recording rules.
- Look under the provider’s Library, DVR, or Recordings section.
- Update the provider app and tvOS, then sign out and back in if the controls still seem wrong.
- Check the provider’s help page for restrictions on that channel or program.
If a recording starts late, the provider may have begun saving only when you selected Record; look for a restart, replay, or later full airing if offered. If it disappears, check the provider’s expiration policy, account or profile, subscription status, and access to the channel. Cloud DVR recordings are controlled by the service and may expire; they are not permanent archives.
Can Apple TV save a show as a video file?
Apple TV has no normal user-facing screen-recording workflow or export-to-file feature. External capture equipment may be used in legitimate production or troubleshooting contexts, but streaming content can be protected, blocked, or restricted by law and service terms. Do not treat capture as a routine way to make permanent copies of shows or as a substitute for a DVR.

Can I connect a USB drive to Apple TV and record?
No. A USB drive does not turn Apple TV into a DVR; use a provider’s cloud DVR or a separate compatible tuner/DVR system.

Apple TV does not record the screen for those apps. Use each service’s on-demand library and any official offline feature it offers on supported devices.

Where are Apple TV recordings stored?
When a provider app offers DVR, recordings are managed through that provider’s account and app, not saved as files on Apple TV.
Can I watch a cloud recording without internet?
Cloud DVR playback normally requires the provider app and an internet connection. Any offline option is service- and device-specific; Apple TV itself does not store cloud recordings for offline viewing.
Can I record a sports game that is already in progress?
Often you can add it, but the recording may begin only from that point. YouTube TV documents this behavior; check the provider’s rules and look for a restart or replay option.
