To stop a recommendation from starting when the YouTube TV app opens on your television, open YouTube TV → Settings → Autoplay on Start and switch it Off. This setting is different from the regular YouTube app’s Autoplay control, which governs what happens after a video ends.
Turn off autoplay in the YouTube TV app on your TV
- Open the YouTube TV app on your TV or streaming device.
- Open Settings.
- Find Autoplay on Start.
- Switch it Off.
YouTube TV describes this feature as starting one of your top recommendations when the TV app opens. With it off, opening the app should no longer launch that recommendation automatically. You can still browse Home, Live, and Library and manually choose a live program, recording, movie, or show. The documented path is in YouTube TV Help; menu navigation can look a little different across devices.
First check which app is playing
YouTube TV is the live-TV streaming service, with areas such as Home, Live, and Library. Its startup control is called Autoplay on Start. The standard YouTube app is a separate product: its Autoplay control determines whether another related video plays after the current one ends.
If a video starts as soon as YouTube TV opens, change Autoplay on Start in YouTube TV. If another video begins after you finish watching in the regular YouTube app, change that app’s Autoplay setting instead. Changing one does not necessarily change the other.

Turn off autoplay in the regular YouTube app
On a smart TV or game console, open the YouTube app, go to Settings, find Autoplay, and set it to Off. This is for next-video playback in regular YouTube, not YouTube TV’s startup recommendation. See YouTube Help: Autoplay videos.
On a phone or tablet
In the YouTube app, open a video and switch off the Autoplay control at the top of the player. Alternatively, tap your profile picture, go to Settings → Autoplay, and switch it off. The exact placement can vary with app versions.

On a computer
Open a YouTube video and switch off Autoplay at the bottom of the video player.
If you are casting to the TV
A phone or tablet can control a cast session even though the video appears on the television. Start a video, tap the playback control bar at the bottom of the mobile screen to expand the queue, then switch Autoplay off there. The cast queue’s setting is separate from YouTube TV’s Autoplay on Start control.

Why something may still move or play automatically
- The wrong app’s setting was changed: Confirm whether the app is YouTube TV or YouTube, then use the control for that app and behavior.
- A cast queue is active: Check autoplay on the phone or tablet controlling the cast session.
- You are seeing a preview: A moving thumbnail or browsing preview is not necessarily a full program starting. The startup setting should not be assumed to disable every preview on every device.
- The app may be restoring a previous viewing state: If a program or live channel reappears, check whether playback is being resumed rather than a new recommendation being launched.
- The device interface differs: Button placement can vary. Look specifically for the setting named Autoplay on Start in YouTube TV.
If the YouTube TV setting is missing or does not stick
Try these checks in order. They are troubleshooting suggestions, not guaranteed fixes:
- Make sure you are in the YouTube TV app, not the standard YouTube app.
- Close YouTube TV completely, reopen it, and check whether the change took effect.
- If a phone or tablet is connected, inspect the cast queue or disconnect casting and test the TV app directly.
- Update the YouTube TV app and the streaming device’s software, then look for Autoplay on Start again.
- If the setting still does not persist, sign out and back in, then test once more.
- If the documented control is still absent or ineffective, use YouTube TV Help for official support options.
For regular YouTube, autoplay settings can differ by device, so verify the control on the device actually playing the video. Google also notes that autoplay can be restricted for supervised accounts; this applies to regular YouTube and is not the YouTube TV startup setting.
