Robert Zemeckis’s 104-minute PG-13 drama is worth sampling if you enjoy experimental filmmaking, multigenerational stories, and emotionally direct family dramas—but its fixed-camera structure, fragmented timeline, and digital de-aging make it a poor fit for viewers who want conventional cinematic momentum.

The film’s main emotional thread centers on Richard and Margaret Young, played by Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. It is adapted from Richard McGuire’s graphic novel Here, whose central idea is also to explore one place across different moments in time. Why is the movie so unusual?

Much of Here is presented from a largely fixed viewpoint. This is not literally one uninterrupted shot. It is a deliberately restricted, fixed-angle presentation that makes the passage of time the film’s central visual subject. The Associated Press described the production as using essentially the same fixed angle for almost the entire 105-minute film; Netflix lists the finished movie at 1 hour 44 minutes. The experiment is designed to echo McGuire’s page-based exploration of a single location, but it also places unusual demands on the audience.

Why did Here divide viewers?

Calling Here “polarizing” is most accurate when referring to its artistic reception. The available response does not point to a major political or social controversy. Instead, viewers and critics disagreed sharply about whether the film’s formal experiment creates meaningful drama or overwhelms it.

Here is not a sequel, and it is not structured like Forrest Gump. Its fixed viewpoint and time-jumping form make it far more experimental, while its emotional approach is broader and more openly sentimental. Viewers returning mainly for the reunion may be surprised by how little the two films resemble each other in construction.

Do not approach it expecting another Forrest Gump, and do not assume that Netflix availability makes it a universally safe recommendation.
