Apple TV+ Reportedly Shifts to a Netflix-Like Movie Strategy—but It Isn’t Leaving Theaters

Apple TV+ was reportedly preparing to make its movie operation more streaming-first, not abandon theaters altogether. A September 27, 2024 report based on information from Bloomberg’s sources said Apple was considering roughly 12 films a year, with most costing less than $100 million and going primarily to Apple TV+. The reported plan also retained one or two larger theatrical films annually and maintained an overall film-spending target of about $1 billion.

That distinction matters in 2026: “Netflix-like” describes a reported release strategy, not an official Apple announcement that the company has adopted Netflix’s entire business model. The public evidence supplied for this article does not independently confirm that every target remained unchanged through August 2026.

The reported strategy in brief

According to the September 2024 report summarizing Bloomberg’s coverage, Apple’s planned adjustment had four main elements:

  • About 12 films per year: a larger and more regular movie slate.
  • Lower average production costs: most projects would reportedly cost less than $100 million.
  • Streaming-first distribution: most films would go directly to Apple TV+ or receive only short theatrical runs.
  • A few premium exceptions: one or two major films each year could still receive large budgets and substantial theatrical campaigns.

The same report said Apple intended to maintain approximately $1 billion in annual film spending. That figure was a reported target, not a publicly filed annual budget or a permanent quota confirmed by Apple.

Why “Netflix-like” is an incomplete description

The comparison is mainly about distribution economics. Apple was reportedly considering a slate in which streaming would be the normal destination, wide theatrical releases would become less common, and expensive cinema bets would be limited to selected event movies.

Apple’s reported direction The Netflix-like similarity
Most films aimed primarily at streaming Streaming-first distribution
Fewer wide theatrical releases Less dependence on cinema exhibition
Most projects below $100 million More controlled exposure per title
Short cinema windows for some films Limited runs that can support awards or prestige goals
One or two major exceptions Selective event films rather than every release being a theatrical event

It does not mean Apple TV+ has become Netflix in every respect. Apple’s service remains a relatively curated, all-original offering. Apple’s official service page describes Apple Originals, weekly releases, an ad-free experience and availability across Apple devices, Android devices, smart TVs, streaming devices, PCs and the web. The report did not say Apple was copying Netflix’s catalog scale, advertising structure, pricing model or overall corporate strategy.

Wolfs became the clearest case study

Wolfs, starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, illustrated the reported change. The film had been associated with a more conventional theatrical strategy, but its plans were reportedly scaled back. It received a limited theatrical window before becoming primarily an Apple TV+ title.

That approach can preserve several benefits of a cinema release without treating the film as a normal nationwide theatrical launch:

  1. It gives the movie some theatrical visibility.
  2. It can help with festival, awards and industry positioning.
  3. It maintains relationships with cinemas and filmmakers.
  4. It allows Apple to market major stars while prioritizing home viewing.

A short theatrical run is therefore not the same as a wide theatrical release. It may function partly as a prestige or eligibility window rather than as the main commercial life of the movie. The reported one-week model should be understood as a proposed mechanism for some titles, not a universal Apple rule.

Why Apple reconsidered expensive theatrical bets

Apple TV+ launched in 2019 and initially backed ambitious films with major directors, stars and theatrical campaigns. The group included Killers of the Flower Moon, Napoleon, Argylle and Fly Me to the Moon.

The report characterized these large theatrical bets as failing to recover their production costs, with some performing particularly poorly. That characterization should be attributed to the report rather than treated as a complete audited accounting of each title.

The underlying business problem is straightforward: a large movie can carry substantial production, marketing, distribution and exhibition expenses before streaming value is counted. A theatrical release may create publicity and prestige, but it also exposes the film to box-office risk. If audiences do not buy enough tickets, the revenue may not offset those costs.

There is also an important difference between critical prestige and financial success. A film can attract awards attention, enhance Apple’s cultural profile and strengthen relationships with filmmakers while still producing disappointing ticket sales. Conversely, a streaming film can be valuable through viewing, retention, subscriber acquisition and brand impact even when it has little or no conventional box-office result.

What Apple could gain from a streaming-first slate

Lower downside per project

If most films cost less than $100 million, Apple could spread its film spending across more titles instead of placing an unusually large share of its annual exposure in a few blockbusters. That would not eliminate risk: marketing can still be expensive, and a lower production budget does not guarantee an audience. It could, however, reduce the damage caused by an individual theatrical failure.

A steadier reason to use Apple TV+

A target of roughly 12 films a year would give Apple TV+ a more regular movie rhythm. Subscribers would not need to wait for one or two high-profile releases to justify the service. That fits Apple’s own positioning of the product as an on-demand, ad-free home-streaming service.

Selective theatrical prestige

Apple would not necessarily have to choose between abandoning theaters and making every film a major theatrical event. One or two premium releases could still provide cultural visibility, attract high-value talent and give the service a tentpole around which marketing can be organized.

F1 was cited in the report as an example of the type of premium project that could receive exceptional treatment. Whether such films are intended mainly to generate ticket revenue, promote Apple TV+, strengthen the Apple brand or accomplish all three is an analytical question—not a confirmed Apple statement.

The trade-offs and risks

Less cultural impact

Wide theatrical releases create a shared public event. A streaming-first release may be easier for subscribers to watch, but it can generate less conversation, fewer prominent reviews and less visibility outside the existing customer base.

Talent and awards concerns

Actors and directors may prefer projects that receive a genuine cinema rollout. A minimal theatrical window can also be viewed as an awards-eligibility exercise rather than a serious theatrical release, even when the film itself is prestigious.

Subscriber-conversion uncertainty

A movie can be popular with current subscribers without persuading enough non-subscribers to join. Streaming performance is also difficult to compare directly with ticket sales because platforms do not always publish comprehensive viewing or profitability data.

Marketing is not automatically cheaper

Reducing the production budget does not necessarily reduce promotional costs. A star-driven film may still require an expensive global campaign, and a crowded streaming slate can make it harder for any individual title to stand out.

Possible brand dilution

Apple built much of its entertainment identity around prestige. Releasing more modest films could make the service feel more active, but a large number of weak or forgettable titles could also weaken the premium image Apple has cultivated.

Theater relationships

Cinemas may be less willing to devote screens and marketing support to Apple films if most titles receive only brief runs. That could make future event releases harder to launch, particularly in a market where exhibitors need dependable wide-release inventory.

  • Apple had officially abandoned theaters.
  • Apple would release exactly 12 movies every year.
  • Every Apple film would cost less than $100 million.
  • The approximately $1 billion figure was a guaranteed annual budget approved in a public filing.
  • Apple TV+ had adopted Netflix’s complete business model.
  • The reported strategy had been formally implemented unchanged through August 2026.

The more accurate description is that Apple was reportedly testing a disciplined, streaming-first film model while preserving theatrical space for a small number of high-profile projects.

Who benefits—and who may lose?

  • Apple: potentially lower downside per film, a steadier release schedule and continued access to prestige projects.
  • Subscribers: more films available at home, without requiring a cinema visit, although the quality and variety of the slate remain decisive.
  • Theaters: fewer wide releases and shorter engagements, with premium Apple films potentially providing occasional high-value business.
  • Filmmakers and stars: continued access to Apple financing, but potentially less theatrical exposure and different compensation or marketing expectations.
  • Awards organizations: more films seeking eligibility through limited runs, raising continuing questions about the difference between formal eligibility and meaningful theatrical distribution.
  • Competing streamers: another major technology company competing for high-end talent and subscribers, while potentially validating a more selective approach to theatrical releases.

What this means for someone considering Apple TV+

Apple’s U.S. service page accessed in August 2026 listed Apple TV at $12.99 per month after a seven-day trial, with commercial-free Apple Originals and sharing for up to six people. It also listed Apple One plans starting at $19.95 per month, although pricing and availability depend on geography and eligibility. Check the official Apple TV page before subscribing.

Apple TV+ is a better fit for viewers who want Apple Original films and series, particularly those who value an ad-free service, weekly releases or family sharing. It is less suitable for someone seeking the largest possible licensed-movie library or constant access to general-interest television.

You do not need an Apple TV 4K box to use the service. Apple says the Apple TV app works on supported smart TVs, streaming devices, computers, mobile devices and online. A separate hardware purchase should not be treated as a requirement.

Netflix is a useful comparison because its movie operation is more strongly associated with streaming-first distribution. However, the available Netflix signup page confirms plan selection and cancellation flexibility without providing enough current, geography-specific pricing information to make a reliable price comparison here. See the official Netflix signup page for current terms.

What remains unknown

  • Whether Apple achieved the reported target of approximately 12 films annually.
  • Whether the approximately $1 billion film-spending target remained in force.
  • How many later Apple films received wide theatrical releases.
  • Whether streaming performance justified the reported change.
  • Whether Apple formally converted the reported strategy into a permanent public policy.

Those unanswered questions are why the wording matters. The available evidence supports describing a reported strategic correction after expensive theatrical bets—not declaring a confirmed, permanent transformation of Apple TV+.
