Yes—YouTube really tested song identification by humming. The experiment began on Android in August 2023, allowing selected users to hum, sing, or play a recording for at least three seconds and receive matching YouTube videos, Shorts, and official music content. YouTube’s current Help documentation now describes song search as an Android feature, although the control may still vary by account, app version, device, and region.
What YouTube’s song-search feature does
The feature adds a song-identification mode to YouTube’s voice search. Instead of saying a search query, users can provide a melody by:
- Humming it;
- Singing it;
- Playing the original recording near the phone; or
- Playing a recording from another device.
YouTube then attempts to identify the track and directs the user to relevant content, including official music videos, user-uploaded videos, and Shorts. That makes it different from a simple song-title lookup: the result is designed to lead directly into YouTube’s video and music ecosystem.

YouTube’s current Help page now describes switching from Voice Search to Song Search on Android, so the feature should not be treated as only an unreleased 2023 experiment. However, YouTube has not established that it is available universally or globally.

How to identify a song by humming in YouTube
- Open the YouTube app on an Android phone or tablet.
- Tap the search icon.
- Tap the microphone or voice-search control.
- Look for an option to switch from Voice Search to Song Search.
- Hum or sing the melody, or play the song near the device microphone.
- Record several seconds of audio. The original test required three or more seconds.
- Review the suggested song and open the relevant video, Short, or official music result.
Labels, icons, and placement can differ between app versions. YouTube’s documentation confirms the Voice Search-to-Song Search workflow, but it does not promise that every Android account will display the control.
What to do if Song Search is missing
If the option does not appear, try these steps:
- Update YouTube through the device’s app store.
- Confirm that you are using Android; the current YouTube documentation specifically describes Android availability.
- Check YouTube’s microphone permission in the phone’s app settings.
- Close and reopen YouTube, restart the device, or sign in again.
- Try the sound-search control in YouTube Music if it is available in your version of the app. The feature was reported in YouTube Music in 2024.
- Use Google’s separate song-search feature, SoundHound, or Shazam instead.
These are practical troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes. YouTube does not publish a complete account-, region-, and version-by-version availability matrix.
Humming versus playing the original song
These are related but different use cases. When you hum or sing, the system tries to match the melody even though the original recording is absent. When you play the actual song, it can compare an audio excerpt with a known recording.

Playing the original track will generally be easier than reproducing its melody yourself. A clear, continuous hum of a recognizable chorus is more useful than a very short fragment. Background conversation, competing music, poor microphone quality, remixes, live versions, unusual tuning, and obscure tracks can all make identification harder.
How the technology works
YouTube’s feature is related to Google’s Hum to Search, which Google introduced in October 2020. Google says its machine-learning system converts a melody into a numerical representation and compares it with musical material, while attempting to discount characteristics such as instrumentation, vocal timbre, and tone.
YouTube told TechCrunch that the 2023 experiment used the same underlying technology as Google’s existing song-identification feature. Public sources do not establish the exact model used in the current YouTube implementation, the size of its song catalogue, or a guaranteed accuracy rate. Nor is there evidence that every song, cover, Short, live recording, or user upload is indexed equally.

YouTube, Google, SoundHound, or Shazam?

SoundHound is the clearest dedicated alternative when the only clue is a melody you can hum or sing. Its official materials specifically advertise that capability. The app is free to use, while optional features and pricing can vary by platform and region.

Shazam remains a strong choice when the song is playing in a room, on television, in a car, or inside another app. Its official site lists iOS and Android apps, along with features such as lyrics, charts, and links to music services. It should not automatically be described as equivalent to YouTube or SoundHound for humming.
Why a match may fail
Song search is more likely to work when you provide several seconds of a clear and distinctive melody, preferably the chorus or another recognizable section. It may struggle when:

- The recording is too short;
- The melody is significantly off-key or rhythmically altered;
- The input is mostly percussion, speech, or sound effects;
- There is substantial background noise;
- The song is obscure, unreleased, regional, or missing from the relevant index;
- The audio is a remix, live performance, cover, or film cue with limited metadata; or
- Several songs share a similar melodic phrase.
An instrumental track can still be identified if it has a recognizable melody. Music built mainly from rhythm, texture, or sound design is more difficult. For covers and user-generated uploads, YouTube may identify the underlying composition but return several different performances. Viral sounds may also produce duplicate or noisy results because the results can include Shorts and user-uploaded material.
Do not treat the feature as a guarantee that YouTube will identify any song, and there is no reliable basis for claiming that it is more accurate than Shazam or another service.
Android, iPhone, and YouTube Music availability
The currently retrieved YouTube Help documentation specifically describes Song Search on Android. It does not establish that the same control is universally available in the YouTube app for iPhone or iPad. Apple-device users can instead try Google’s song-search feature, YouTube Music if its sound-search control appears, SoundHound, or Shazam.

YouTube and YouTube Music should also be treated as separate availability questions. A sound-search control reported in YouTube Music does not prove that the identical feature, interface, or rollout exists in the main YouTube app. Availability may depend on the app version, account, device, and region.
Microphone permissions and privacy
Song Search requires audio input, so YouTube needs microphone access while you record or hum. If the control does not work, review YouTube’s microphone permission in Android settings and check whether the device has a system-wide microphone restriction enabled.
YouTube separately documents controls for managing audio recordings associated with voice search in its Android voice-search help. Review your Google and YouTube activity settings if you want to understand or manage saved voice recordings. The exact retention and control experience can depend on account and device settings.
The feature’s place in Google’s timeline
YouTube did not invent humming-based recognition in 2023. Google had already introduced Hum to Search in 2020. The YouTube experiment brought a similar interaction into YouTube’s own search interface, where the practical goal is not only to name a song but also to surface videos, Shorts, performances, and other content available on the platform.
That distinction explains why the original headline was both accurate and incomplete. It was a real limited Android test at launch. It is now more accurate to say that YouTube documents song search by humming or recorded audio as an Android capability, while acknowledging that individual users may not see it.
