The app is Plex. Its free, ad-supported Live TV service offers a cable-style channel guide without a monthly subscription, antenna, or tuner. It is a legitimate option for documentaries, classic television, news feeds, movies, and background viewing—but it is not a replacement for local broadcast stations, premium channels, or every major sporting event.
Plex is more than a media server
Plex is best known for organizing and streaming a personal collection of movies and television through a media server. It also operates a free, ad-supported streaming service with scheduled live channels and on-demand programming.
These are internet-delivered FAST channels—free ad-supported television feeds arranged in a traditional guide. They are not pirate IPTV streams, a loophole for unlocking cable, or a free trial that automatically becomes a paid subscription. Plex describes its free Live TV service as requiring neither tuner hardware nor an antenna. Plex’s support documentation explains the service and its requirements.
Is Plex Live TV really free?
For the free streaming-channel service, a paid subscription is not required. The trade-off is advertising: commercials fund the programming, so “free” does not mean ad-free or commercial-free. Depending on the device and feature, Plex may ask you to create or use an account. Plex Pass should not be confused with access to the basic free streaming channels; premium features such as certain DVR capabilities belong to a separate part of the Plex ecosystem.

- Important Reception Considerations: The actual receivable range may highly dependents on your distance and location. Areas with large obstructions such as valleys, mountains, tower etc will reduce effective range. It is best for the antenna to be in line of sight with the TV tower(s) and avoid obstructions. Availability is also subject to change. Channels rotate, content differs by region, and internet viewing uses broadband data. Households with data caps should treat extended viewing as part of their monthly allowance. An internet outage stops Plex Live TV, unlike an antenna receiving an over-the-air broadcast.
How many channels does Plex have?
Plex advertises more than 600 free live-TV channels as of August 2026. That is a useful indication of the service’s scale, not a guarantee that every viewer will see the same lineup. The available channels depend on location and licensing agreements, and the count can include many specialized or heavily repeated feeds.

The most useful way to think about Plex’s catalog is by viewing habit rather than by channel count. Depending on your region, the guide may include:

Like other FAST services, Plex is strongest when you want a curated stream or background television. Expect repeats, scheduled blocks, older library content, and changing catalogs. A recognizable news or sports brand may provide clips, highlights, or curated programming rather than the same live feed available through cable. Pluto TV’s own service description illustrates this distinction between branded programming and a full cable-network feed.
Does Plex include local channels?
Do not assume it does. Plex’s free internet channel lineup is not a dependable substitute for your local ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, PBS, or local-news station.
For local broadcast television, you may need an over-the-air antenna, a network-owned app or website, a paid live-TV service, or a local streaming service available in your area. Plex can also work with antenna-based live TV and DVR setups, but that is a separate feature: the antenna receives the broadcast signal, while Plex Media Server can organize, record, and distribute it. It should not be confused with Plex’s free internet-delivered channels.

Does it have live sports?

If a particular game matters, check the event’s official rights holder and schedule. “Sports” in a channel description does not necessarily mean live access to the event you want.

How to start watching
- Open the app store on your television, streaming device, phone, tablet, or game console.
- Search for the official Plex app and install it.
- Open Plex and sign in or create an account if prompted.
- Choose Live TV or Live TV on Plex in the navigation sidebar or menu.
- Browse the guide, select a listing, and start playback.
- Use favorites or guide customization if your device supports those options.
You should see currently airing and upcoming programs in a linear guide. If Live TV is missing, confirm that you installed the official app, update the app and device software, sign out and back in, and check whether your country and device are supported. Make sure you are in Plex’s free streaming section rather than your personal-media-server area. Restarting the app or device can also resolve a temporary loading problem. The catches
- Ads are unavoidable: the service is free because advertising supports it.
- Channel quantity is not the same as channel value: many feeds are niche, repetitive, or built around older content.
- The catalog rotates: a program available today may disappear later.
- Local and premium programming is limited: Plex is not a full cable replacement.
- Internet is required: broadband failures and data caps matter.
- Account behavior varies: one device or feature may require sign-in while another permits guest viewing.
- Accessibility varies: verify captions, audio description, remote navigation, and screen-reader support on your specific platform.
- Beware misleading search results: install the official Plex app, not an unlicensed IPTV app or an unofficial playlist.
Who should use Plex?
Plex is a good fit for casual channel surfers, households that want free background TV, existing Plex users, and anyone looking for a second service alongside an antenna. It is particularly appealing if you want one app that combines scheduled free channels with personal-media features.
Choose something else—or add another service—if your priorities are local news, current scripted programming, ad-free viewing, or guaranteed access to major live sports. Viewers who want only the simplest free live-channel guide may find Pluto TV or a built-in service such as Samsung TV Plus easier to understand.
Verdict
Plex is worth installing because it provides a large amount of legitimate live television at no monthly cost. It is not “free cable,” but it is a useful supplemental TV service—and for some households, it may be enough for casual viewing.
