The comment came from an unnamed YouTube TV executive during a 2025 carriage dispute with Disney—not from a publicly identified company spokesperson. Disney-owned channels disappeared from YouTube TV after the companies’ agreement expired on October 30, 2025. The dispute ended on November 14 with a new multi-year agreement, and the affected programming was restored during November 14–15.
What happened between YouTube TV and Disney?
YouTube TV and Disney were negotiating a renewal of their distribution agreement when the existing deal expired at midnight on October 30, 2025. Disney programming subsequently went dark on YouTube TV, removing major sports, broadcast, entertainment, children’s and news networks from subscribers’ channel guides.
During the blackout, YouTube TV argued that Disney’s proposed terms would raise costs for subscribers and preserve a broad bundle of channels that many viewers might not watch. A report citing an unnamed YouTube executive described Disney’s negotiating approach as “unnecessarily aggressive and assertive.”
Disney rejected that characterization, reportedly accusing YouTube of intentionally misrepresenting the negotiations. The public record therefore contains competing corporate accounts—not independently verified proof that Disney acted improperly.

The dispute was resolved on November 14, 2025, when the companies announced a new multi-year distribution agreement. Restoration began immediately and continued through November 14–15.
Disney’s announcement and YouTube TV’s subscriber notice confirm the settlement and restoration.
What did the YouTube TV executive allege?
According to reporting by 9to5Google, citing an unnamed YouTube executive involved in the talks, YouTube TV objected to several aspects of Disney’s negotiating position:

- Disney was allegedly seeking substantial increases in carriage fees.
- Disney allegedly wanted its full portfolio bundled together, requiring subscribers to pay for channels they might rarely or never watch.
- YouTube TV viewed Disney’s approach as an outdated version of pay-TV economics.
- The executive reportedly distinguished between highly valuable sports networks and Disney-owned channels with declining or negligible viewership.
- YouTube TV also reportedly believed Disney was prepared to tolerate a blackout because viewers could turn to Hulu + Live TV or Fubo.
These points should be understood as YouTube TV’s negotiating argument. The public announcements did not disclose the proposed fee increase, the exact wholesale terms, minimum guarantees, subscriber thresholds or other financial details. Nor did they establish Disney’s motives independently.
Disney’s response
Disney disputed YouTube TV’s account and reportedly said YouTube was deliberately misrepresenting the situation. Disney’s public position centered on restoring its programming through a distribution agreement that served viewers.

The final deal did not produce a publicly announced à-la-carte arrangement for individual Disney networks. Instead, Disney said the agreement preserved carriage of its full linear portfolio, including its sports, broadcast, entertainment, children’s and specialty channels.
Which channels disappeared?
The blackout affected Disney-owned programming carried by YouTube TV. The affected lineup included:
- ABC and local ABC stations, with local availability varying by market
- ABC News Live
- ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN News and ESPN Deportes
- ACC Network and SEC Network
- Disney Channel, Disney Junior and Disney XD
- Freeform
- FX, FXM and FXX
- National Geographic, Nat Geo Wild and Nat Geo Mundo
- Localish and Baby TV Español
A subscriber’s exact ABC station and local lineup depended on location. Restored carriage also did not mean that every Disney streaming title automatically became part of YouTube TV; linear network distribution and on-demand streaming subscriptions remain separate products.
Why the blackout mattered to viewers
This was more than a dispute over entertainment channels. Subscribers temporarily lost access to ESPN sports, college football, NFL programming carried through ABC and ESPN, NBA programming, ABC news and entertainment, and Disney, FX and National Geographic content.
YouTube TV also said affected recordings, preferences and recommendations would be restored after the settlement. During the outage, existing recordings from affected channels could be unavailable, making the dispute particularly disruptive for viewers who continued paying for the service while major programming was missing.

What the final agreement included
The publicly announced agreement included:
- Continued carriage of Disney’s full linear network portfolio.
- Continued carriage of ESPN networks, ABC, Disney-branded channels, Freeform, FX Networks and National Geographic channels.
- Access to ESPN’s new direct-to-consumer Unlimited Plan at no additional cost for YouTube TV subscribers, as described by Disney.
- More flexibility for YouTube to offer selected Disney networks and Disney+/Hulu bundles through additional packages or offerings.
The companies did not publicly disclose the exact length of the multi-year agreement, new carriage fees, minimum payments, wholesale pricing, subscriber thresholds, the precise price of ESPN Unlimited or the complete mechanics of future Disney streaming bundles. Claims that the settlement guarantees lower YouTube TV prices are therefore unsupported by the announcements reviewed.

Did subscribers receive compensation?
YouTube TV offered eligible subscribers a one-time $20 credit connected to the extended blackout. The support notice said the credit had to be claimed by December 9, 2025. It was a temporary outage concession, not a permanent reduction in the service’s monthly price.

The conflict reflects a basic tension in internet-delivered pay TV. YouTube TV wants to control programming costs and avoid making every subscriber finance channels with limited usage. Disney wants to preserve the value of a portfolio that combines premium sports rights with entertainment, children’s, news and specialty networks.
Those interests are increasingly complicated by the companies’ own streaming businesses. Disney distributes content through Disney+, Hulu and ESPN’s direct-to-consumer products, while YouTube TV competes with other live-TV providers for subscribers. A blackout can pressure both sides, but it can also send viewers toward alternative services.
That does not prove that either company caused the blackout solely to benefit another product. It does show why carriage negotiations have become more consequential: the same programming company can be a network owner, a streaming provider and a partner—or competitor—of the distributor carrying its channels.

What YouTube TV subscribers should know now
The 2025 Disney blackout is over. Disney’s affected linear networks and stations were restored under the new multi-year agreement. The dispute alone is not a current reason to cancel YouTube TV.
Readers deciding whether to stay should instead consider whether they need ESPN, ABC, SEC Network, ACC Network, FX or Disney Channel; whether their local ABC station is available in their market; and whether YouTube TV’s interface and DVR features suit their household.
Potential alternatives considered during the blackout included Hulu + Live TV, Fubo, Sling TV, DIRECTV Stream, ESPN’s direct-to-consumer service and an over-the-air antenna. These are not interchangeable:
- Hulu + Live TV may suit viewers seeking Disney-owned live channels alongside Disney streaming services.
- Fubo may appeal to sports-focused households, but fees, local stations and network availability vary.
- Sling can be useful for selected sports access but is not necessarily a full YouTube TV replacement.
- ESPN’s direct service targets sports viewers and does not automatically replace ABC, FX, Disney Channel or local broadcasts.
- An antenna can provide local ABC where reception is available, but it cannot replace ESPN or cable networks. Check local reception with AntennaWeb.
Current prices, package names, local-channel coverage and ESPN integration should be checked directly with each provider. The settlement restored the programming, but it did not eliminate the possibility of future carriage disputes across the live-TV industry.

“Unnecessarily aggressive” was a reported description from an unnamed YouTube TV negotiator, not an independently established verdict about Disney. YouTube TV alleged that Disney sought higher fees and rigid bundling; Disney rejected that account. The practical outcome is clearer: after a roughly two-week blackout, the companies reached a multi-year deal on November 14, 2025, restoring Disney’s channels and adding new flexibility around Disney streaming products.
