Some celebrities have said they do without a cellphone; others avoid smartphones but keep a basic handset, or have no personal number while occasionally using a phone supplied for work. Those are different choices, not interchangeable versions of “refusing to use a phone.” Here are the best-documented examples, with the limits and dates of the evidence made clear.
Important distinction: A flip phone is still a cellphone. And a person without a personal phone number may still use a team member’s device at times. This list separates people reported to have no cellphone from people who avoid smartphones or have a more limited arrangement. The evidence is uneven: some habits have been reaffirmed recently, while others are based on older interviews or attributed accounts.
Reportedly without a cellphone
1. Christopher Walken
Walken is the clearest example of a celebrity who says he does not have a cellphone. In a 2016 Guardian interview, he said he had no cellphone or computer and could be reached on his home landline. Vanity Fair reported the same pattern in 2022. In a 2025 Wall Street Journal interview, he again said he had no cellphone, email, or Twitter; he watched Severance on DVDs sent to him. His alternatives include a landline and other people’s help with access to media and communication. This is not a claim that he avoids every form of technology.

2. Christopher Nolan
Nolan has been described as working without a cellphone and not communicating by text or email. In a July 2026 report, Matt Damon described receiving an unexpected call from Nolan when the filmmaker wanted to talk; the same report referred to Nolan’s 2023 comments to The Hollywood Reporter about not texting or emailing. This is strong, recent reporting, but it is not the same as a direct, current statement from Nolan that he owns no phone. The account suggests a deliberately direct, slower route to collaborators rather than messaging by mobile.

3. Andrew Lloyd Webber
In a 2018 Town & Country interview, Lloyd Webber said he did not have a mobile phone, explaining that it meant he did not have to respond to people immediately. That makes his reason unusually explicit: control over availability and interruption. The interview is several years old, however, so it establishes what he said then, not that the arrangement is unchanged today.
No personal phone number, with work-related exceptions
4. Ed Sheeran
Sheeran has said he gave up his phone in 2015 and moved to email, which he used on an iPad. In 2024 coverage of his podcast comments, he said he had no phone number and could be contacted by email. But “no phone number” does not mean he never touches a phone: he also acknowledged that his team sometimes gives him a phone at events for filming or social-media work. People en Español reported his switch to email and an iPad, while Yahoo’s report on his 2024 comments describes the phone-number and event-phone qualifications. His example is about limiting personal access, not total abstinence from mobile devices.

No smartphone, but still a cellphone
5. Aziz Ansari
Ansari belongs in a separate category: a 2026 BuzzFeed report, drawing on a 2025 People interview, says he uses a flip phone rather than a smartphone and blocks much of the internet on his computer. A flip phone can still make calls and send texts, so it would be inaccurate to describe him as having no cellphone. His choice is specifically about avoiding the smartphone experience and reducing online distractions.
Why the distinction matters
“Phone-free” can mean no handset, no smartphone, no personal number, or a phone kept out of a particular setting. The first three examples above are also not equally current or equally direct: Walken’s no-cellphone position was reiterated in 2025; Nolan’s current practice is described through reporting and a collaborator; and Lloyd Webber’s statement dates to 2018. Sheeran’s arrangement includes a work exception, while Ansari uses a basic mobile phone.

Those arrangements may also depend on assistants, teams, landlines, or flexible work patterns. They are not automatically practical for someone who needs a phone for safety, caregiving, navigation, or work. Still, the underlying choices can be adapted without copying a celebrity’s whole setup: silence nonessential alerts, move email off the phone, set times to check messages, or try a basic handset while keeping a reliable way to reach emergency contacts.
Claims about other celebrities often blur personal habits with phone-free events or sets. For example, Dave Chappelle’s shows have used locked-phone policies, but an audience policy does not establish that Chappelle himself avoids cellphones. Likewise, a claim that someone avoids social media is not proof that they do not use a phone. The five examples here are the names for which the supplied evidence supports a clear, appropriately qualified account; it does not substantiate a definitive list of 15.
