Burt, the saltwater crocodile who appeared in Crocodile Dundee, has died at an estimated age of more than 90. Crocosaurus Cove in Darwin, Northern Territory, said Burt died peacefully over the weekend of December 21–22, 2024. His death was reported on December 23.
Burt was the crocodile—not the actor
Burt became internationally recognizable after appearing in the 1986 Australian-American action comedy Crocodile Dundee. The film starred Paul Hogan as Australian adventurer Michael “Crocodile” Dundee and Linda Kozlowski as New York reporter Sue Charlton.
Although headlines sometimes reduced his age to “90,” Burt’s exact hatch date was never documented. Crocosaurus Cove and news reports estimated that he was more than 90 years old. The careful description is therefore an estimated age of more than 90, not an exactly verified 90 years.
His role in Crocodile Dundee
Burt is most closely associated with the film’s crocodile-attack sequence involving Sue Charlton and Mick Dundee. The scene helps establish the relationship between the two human leads: Sue encounters the dangers of the Australian outback, while Dundee’s familiarity with crocodiles becomes part of his introduction to her.

But Burt was not used for every moment of the sequence. According to ABC News reporting based on comments from Crocosaurus Cove chief executive Penny Priest, Burt’s movements and his launch from the water informed the scene, while other filmmaking methods and crocodiles were used for the rest. It is more accurate to say that Burt contributed to the attack sequence than to claim that he performed the entire scene.
Crocodile Dundee was released in 1986 as a 98-minute PG-13 comedy, action and adventure film. Screen Australia classifies it as an action-adventure comedy-romance produced by Rimfire Films, with Paramount handling international sales. The film follows Dundee and Sue from the Australian outback to New York City.
Readers who want to revisit Burt’s movie appearance can look for the original Crocodile Dundee DVD. Edition, region, seller and availability can change, so check the current listing before buying; no particular release should be assumed to include Burt-related bonus material.
From the Reynolds River to Darwin
ABC News reported that Burt was captured in the Reynolds River in Australia’s Northern Territory in 1980 and taken to a crocodile farm. Crocosaurus Cove’s later announcement described him as captured in the 1980s. Because the available accounts differ in precision, 1980 is best presented as the year reported by ABC, while “the 1980s” reflects the broader description used by the attraction.

A large and long-lived saltwater crocodile
Reports associated with Crocosaurus Cove described Burt as approximately 5.1 meters long—about 16 feet 8 inches—and roughly 700 kilograms. Those figures are reported estimates, not the result of a newly published postmortem scientific measurement.
Burt was a saltwater crocodile, Crocodylus porosus. The species is native to the Indo-Pacific region and is known for its size and powerful aquatic hunting ability. Burt’s reported length and weight helped explain why he remained such a major attraction even decades after his film appearance.

More than a movie attraction
At Crocosaurus Cove, Burt was presented not only as a famous film animal but also as an ambassador for crocodile education. His presence gave visitors a direct connection to a recognizable piece of Australian film history while allowing the attraction to discuss crocodile behavior, biology and conservation.
The attraction also used Burt in publicity events involving predictions about elections and sporting outcomes. Those “psychic croc” episodes were entertainment features, not evidence that Burt could predict the future. At least one reported prediction was incorrect, making it especially important not to describe Burt as a genuine predictor.
