In the feature highlighted by DualShockers, cosplay creator Caytiecosplay turns those visual cues into a polished interpretation of the NieR:Automata protagonist.
The headline’s claim that the fan “breaks all the rules” is best understood as dramatic language, not a literal costume violation. What makes the image striking is how effectively it follows the character’s strongest design rules—contrast, proportion, posture, and silhouette—while presenting them as a real-world cosplay.
Caytiecosplay’s 2B look
The original feature, published by Rachael Fiddis on January 19, 2022, identifies the creator as Caytiecosplay. Its description calls attention to the platinum hair, white dress, thigh-high stockings, and PVC boots that shape the photographed look. Those elements are immediately legible even to someone who has never played the game.

The effect comes from restraint. There is no need to explain every piece before recognizing 2B. The pale bob, the eye-covering visor, the monochrome clothing, and the tall boots establish the character’s identity in a single glance. A controlled pose and a sword-like prop can then reinforce the impression without becoming more important than the costume itself.
Why the silhouette reads as 2B
2B’s design is unusually effective for cosplay because its major components form a coherent outline:
- Pale bobbed hair: The platinum style frames the face and creates one of the fastest visual cues for the character.
- Visor or blindfold: The dark eye covering provides a sharp interruption against the light hair and face.
- Black-and-white dress: The fitted, structured costume supplies the central contrast and gives the upper body its distinctive shape.
- Thigh-high stockings: The long dark lines continue the costume’s graphic quality down the legs.
- Tall boots: Boots complete the silhouette and make the outfit feel ready for 2B’s combat role rather than like an ordinary formal dress.
- Gloves and arm coverings: These smaller pieces help carry the black-and-white pattern through the arms and hands.
- Sword prop: A nonfunctional replica is optional in a portrait, but it connects the finished look to 2B’s canonical equipment.
This is also why the cosplay does not depend on a particular brand or a claim of official reproduction. The visual language does most of the work. Matching the proportions and contrast of the major pieces can produce a convincing result even when a fan builds the outfit from separate components.
A quick 2B primer
2B is the designation of YoRHa No.2 Type B, an all-purpose battle android in NieR:Automata. Square Enix’s character material describes her as a close-combat fighter equipped with a sword, while her Pod support system provides ranged assistance. That combination explains why a blade is a natural accessory for a 2B cosplay, although it is not required to make the character recognizable.

The character belongs to a larger creative world associated with Square Enix, writer and director Yoko Taro, character designer Akihiko Yoshida, and action developer PlatinumGames. The costume, however, communicates 2B before any of that background is needed: the visor, pale hair, dress, stockings, and boots are the essential shorthand.
The design details behind the impact
An official PlayStation creator feature provides useful context for understanding why 2B translates so well into photographs. Character modeler Hito Matsudaira discusses the importance of overall form, proportion, detail, lighting, and perspective in building the character. The feature also reproduces an official pattern and encourages fans to cosplay.
That context supports a careful conclusion: 2B was designed with a strong, readable form that rewards close visual recreation. It does not establish that Caytiecosplay used the reproduced pattern, nor does it prove that the featured costume is an official or licensed reproduction. The distinction matters. The cosplay’s success can be recognized on visual grounds without assigning it a manufacturing history that the source does not document.
How to recreate the 2B look
For fans inspired by the feature, the practical route is either a complete NieR: Automata 2B cosplay costume or a modular build assembled piece by piece. Current cosplay guides and retailer listings commonly separate the same recognizable elements: costume, wig, visor or blindfold, gloves, stockings, boots, and prop sword.

2B cosplay checklist
- Start with the dress: Look for the correct black-and-white structure rather than relying only on a product title.
- Choose the wig carefully: The pale bob and the way it falls across one eye are central to the silhouette.
- Add the eye covering: A visor or blindfold makes the character immediately identifiable, but it should not compromise safe movement.
- Match the leg line: Thigh-high stockings and tall black boots preserve the long, high-contrast shape.
- Finish the hands and arms: Gloves or arm coverings help the costume look complete in close photographs.
- Consider a prop last: A nonfunctional sword replica can reinforce the combat identity, but it is optional.
When comparing listings, check the size chart against actual measurements, read the fabric description, confirm what pieces are included, and review the seller’s return policy and delivery estimate. Do not assume that a costume described as “2B” is licensed, screen-accurate, or made from the same materials as another listing. Those claims require confirmation from the individual product page.
Visibility is particularly important with the visor or blindfold. Test the finished outfit in a safe area before walking through a crowded venue. For a sword, use only a nonfunctional costume prop and check the convention’s rules, transport requirements, and applicable local restrictions before bringing it anywhere.

Caytiecosplay’s interpretation stands out because it preserves the parts of 2B’s design that matter most in a single image. The platinum hair, dark visor, white dress, stockings, and tall boots are not random costume details; together they create a visual signature. The result feels faithful without requiring an unsupported claim that the outfit is official or that it was made according to a particular pattern.

That is the real reason the cosplay “breaks all the rules”: it does not need excessive explanation, elaborate lore references, or an overfilled accessory list. The silhouette announces 2B first. Everything else—the pose, lighting, and optional sword—has room to support that announcement.
