tvOS 26 is available, and the current 26-series release is tvOS 26.6. The major update originally launched on September 15, 2025 with Apple’s Liquid Glass redesign and a more capable Apple Music Sing karaoke mode. The iPhone-as-microphone feature has a crucial hardware requirement: it needs an Apple TV 4K (3rd generation), not simply any Apple TV that can run tvOS 26.
tvOS 26 is available, but the version most users should install is the latest maintenance release: tvOS 26.6. The major update originally arrived on September 15, 2025, bringing Apple’s Liquid Glass redesign to supported Apple TV models and turning Apple Music Sing into a more complete living-room karaoke system.
The headline feature has an important hardware caveat: the iPhone-as-microphone experience requires an Apple TV 4K (3rd generation), a compatible iPhone, and iOS 26 or later. Updating an older supported Apple TV can deliver the redesigned interface and other tvOS 26 features, but it does not automatically provide every Apple Music Sing capability.
tvOS 26.6 is the current 26-series release
Apple’s tvOS 26 feature release launched on September 15, 2025. As of August 12, 2026, Apple lists tvOS 26.6 as the latest release in the series. Apple describes the point update as including performance and stability improvements; its security documentation also lists fixes affecting areas such as Accounts Framework, the App Store, WebKit, WebRTC, and Wi-Fi.

That means the original tvOS 26 feature list is not the complete update story. If your Apple TV is already running tvOS 26, install the newest 26.x release offered by the device rather than stopping at the original feature update.
How to check for the update
- Open Settings on the Apple TV.
- Choose System, then Software Updates.
- Select Update Software and install the available release.
Keep the Apple TV connected to power and avoid interrupting it while the update is downloading or installing. The exact version offered depends on the Apple TV model and what is already installed.
Liquid Glass changes the Apple TV interface
tvOS 26’s most visible change is Apple’s Liquid Glass design. It uses translucent, reflective surfaces that let surrounding colors and imagery influence menus and controls while keeping the video or other currently playing content visually prominent.
The redesign reaches beyond a single menu. Apple applies the new visual language to:

- other interface elements that appear over or around playback.
The Liquid Glass design is available on Apple TV 4K (2nd generation and later). It is therefore broader than the karaoke microphone feature, which has a more demanding hardware requirement.
The Apple TV app is better suited to browsing
tvOS 26 also changes how content is presented in the Apple TV app. Cinematic poster art allows more movies and shows to appear on screen at once, making the browsing experience more visual and improving the chance of finding something without opening each title individually.

There is also a new wake-up option for profiles. When enabled, Apple TV can display profiles when it wakes, helping different household members get back to their own recommendations, Watchlists, and Apple Music playlists more quickly.
Apple introduced an API intended to connect app logins with an Apple Account during device setup as well. The goal is to reduce repeated sign-ins when setting up apps, although the experience can depend on whether individual apps support the capability.
Apple Music Sing turns the TV into a karaoke screen
Apple Music Sing is the feature most likely to justify the update for families and groups. On compatible Apple TV hardware, a song’s lead-vocal volume can be reduced while real-time lyrics remain on screen. The result is a karaoke-style arrangement rather than simply playing a normal music video with lyrics.
Depending on the song and supported features, Apple Music Sing can also provide:
- real-time lyrics to follow along with;
- pronunciation assistance;
- translation assistance for supported lyrics;
- visual effects; and
- Continuity Camera features using compatible Apple devices.
How to use an iPhone as the microphone
The iPhone microphone mode sends a participant’s voice through the television or a wired receiver connected to the Apple TV audio system. It does not require a separate Apple TV microphone.
- Update the Apple TV to tvOS 26 or later.
- Open Apple Music and choose a song that supports Apple Music Sing.
- Lower the lead-vocal volume using the Sing controls.
- Display the participation QR code on the television.
- Have participants scan the code with compatible iPhones connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Choose a microphone participant and sing along with the lyrics.
The host needs an Apple Music subscription. Other people joining the session do not each need their own subscription, provided they join the host’s session on the same Wi-Fi network.

Apple allows up to 30 additional people to scan the QR code and join the party. Only one person can use the microphone at a time, so this is a group participation feature rather than a way to mix several live vocalists simultaneously.
Apple Music Sing compatibility and audio limitations
Requirements for the iPhone microphone feature
- Apple TV: Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) running tvOS 26 or later.
- iPhone: iPhone SE (2nd generation or later) or iPhone 11 or later.
- iPhone software: iOS 26 or later.
- Network: participants must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Subscription: the host needs an Apple Music subscription.
- Audio: the TV speakers or a wired receiver’s speakers must be used for the microphone session.
The Apple Music Sing microphone feature does not support wireless speakers such as HomePod during the iPhone-microphone session. If the microphone does not produce sound, check the Apple TV audio output and switch it to the television or wired receiver speakers.
There is another trade-off: enabling Apple Music Sing turns off Dolby Atmos for that song. Atmos returns when Sing is disabled. Users who prioritize surround or spatial audio should treat karaoke mode as a deliberate switch, not an audio setting that remains active alongside Atmos.

Configurable aerial screen savers
tvOS 26 adds more control over aerial screen savers. Users can configure which types of aerial content appear instead of treating the entire collection as one fixed pool.
Default AirPlay speaker output
An AirPlay-enabled speaker can be designated as the Apple TV’s default audio output. This can make everyday listening more convenient, but it does not override the Apple Music Sing microphone limitation: wireless speakers are not supported for the iPhone-microphone session.

Apple TV hardware compatibility is feature-specific. The general tvOS 26 update is available across supported Apple TV hardware, but the Liquid Glass interface and Apple Music Sing microphone mode do not have identical requirements.

The third-generation Apple TV 4K uses an A15 Bionic chip. It is sold in a 64GB Wi-Fi configuration and a 128GB Wi-Fi plus Ethernet configuration. The 128GB model also includes Gigabit Ethernet and Thread networking. Both configurations include HDMI 2.1, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.0.
For buyers specifically interested in karaoke, the Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) is the relevant model because it is the one Apple specifies for the iPhone microphone feature. Buying an older Apple TV solely because it receives tvOS 26 will not provide the same documented karaoke experience.

A compatible 4K/HDR television is required to take advantage of 4K/HDR streaming. Apple also lists an HDMI cable as separately required for Apple TV 4K setup. If you are replacing a cable while installing a new box, choose a compatible HDMI cable suitable for the television and the desired 4K/HDR connection.

The cable is a setup requirement, not a reason for an existing Apple TV owner to buy a new accessory merely because tvOS 26 was released. Likewise, the Siri Remote’s USB-C charging cable or power adapter is a peripheral matter, not a tvOS 26 requirement.
For karaoke, plan the audio path before the party begins. Use the TV speakers or a wired receiver’s speakers for the iPhone microphone session, and do not assume that an AirPlay speaker or HomePod will work simply because it can be selected as the Apple TV’s normal default output.
Should you install tvOS 26?
- Install it if you own a supported Apple TV and want the redesigned interface. Liquid Glass affects navigation, controls, icons, widgets, and the Apple TV experience.
- Install it if you use Apple Music. Apple Music Sing adds vocal reduction, lyrics, and group participation, with the strongest feature set on the third-generation Apple TV 4K.
- Install the latest available 26.x release if you are already on tvOS 26. The later maintenance updates matter for stability and security; the original September 2025 feature list is not the current software state.
- Do not upgrade hardware solely for Liquid Glass without checking your model. Apple TV 4K (2nd generation and later) supports that design, while the karaoke microphone feature requires the third generation.
- Buy new hardware only when the missing feature matters. The Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) makes the most sense for someone who specifically wants iPhone microphones, group karaoke, and current 4K/HDR streaming.
In short, tvOS 26 is more than a cosmetic update, but its most distinctive entertainment feature is not universal. The redesign is the broad upgrade; Apple Music Sing with an iPhone microphone is the feature that requires careful matching of the Apple TV, iPhone, software, subscription, network, and audio equipment.
