To raise the available quality, change your profile’s playback setting in a browser to High or Auto; then check the separate mobile, download, plan, device, network, and HDMI limits if the picture is still soft.
Netflix does not have a manual resolution button
Netflix normally chooses the best picture quality that your plan, title, device, browser, connection, and home-theater equipment can support. To raise the available streaming quality, change your profile’s Data usage per screen setting:
- Open Netflix in a web browser and go to Account.
- Open Profiles and select the profile you want to change.
- Choose Playback settings.
- Under Data usage per screen, select High or Auto, then save the setting.
Choose High when you want Netflix to use the highest quality available for the device and title. Choose Auto when you want Netflix to adjust quality to the current connection and reduce the risk of buffering. The setting applies separately to each profile, so changing it on one profile does not change the preferences of other household members.
What Netflix’s four data settings mean
| Setting | What it does | Approximate maximum data use |
|---|---|---|
| Low | Basic video quality; useful when data use is the priority. | Up to 0.3 GB per hour |
| Medium | Standard video quality with moderate data use. | Up to 0.7 GB per hour |
| High | Uses the best quality available for your device and the title. | Up to 1 GB/hour in SD, 3 GB/hour in HD, or 7 GB/hour in 4K |
| Auto | Adjusts quality automatically according to connection speed. | Varies |
These are maximum figures, not guaranteed hourly totals. Actual usage depends on the title, resolution, device, connection, and how long Netflix spends at each quality level. 4K can use substantially more data than HD.

For Netflix’s target-resolution guidance, High or Auto can support 1080p HD and 4K when the rest of the setup qualifies. 720p HD may be available with Medium, High, or Auto. Selecting High does not force a 4K stream if your plan, title, device, browser, or connection cannot deliver 4K.
How to change Netflix quality on an Android phone, iPhone, or iPad
Mobile streaming has a second control that can restrict quality or prevent streaming over cellular data:
- Open the Netflix app and tap My Netflix.
- Tap the profile name.
- Open App Settings.
- Under Video Playback, tap Cellular Data Usage.
- Choose the option that matches your data plan.
Depending on the app and device, the choices are:
- Automatic: balances picture quality and data consumption.
- Wi-Fi Only: prevents Netflix from streaming over cellular data.
- Save Data: uses less cellular data and is intended to provide more viewing time per gigabyte.
- Maximum Data: uses the highest possible quality for the device and title. Netflix recommends this only with an unlimited data plan.
Mobile data settings can cap quality even when the profile’s browser-based playback setting is High. A phone or tablet may also fail to stream HDR when low-power mode is enabled or when it is using a cellular connection.
How to change the quality of Netflix downloads
Download quality is separate from streaming quality. Changing Data usage per screen does not automatically change the quality of titles you download.

- Open the Netflix app and tap My Netflix in the lower-right corner.
- Tap the profile name at the top.
- Open App Settings.
- Tap Download Video Quality or Video Quality.
- Choose Standard or High/Higher.
Standard creates smaller files, downloads faster, and uses less storage. High or Higher can download titles at up to 1080p HD, but downloads take longer and consume more storage. Some devices do not support HD playback, and some titles are not available in HD. Netflix does not allow the download-quality setting to be changed on Android or Fire devices that do not support HD playback.
Why Netflix may still look blurry after you choose High
The playback setting is only one part of Netflix’s quality system. Check these limits before assuming the setting failed.
1. The title may not be available in the desired quality
Open the title’s details page and look for labels such as HD, 4K, 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, HDR, or HDR10+. The labels shown are specific to the device you are using. A film that is available in 4K in general may show only an HD label on a computer, television, or streaming player that supports a maximum of 1080p.
2. Your Netflix plan may set the ceiling
Plan features vary by country, bundle, and third-party provider. On Netflix’s current US plan information, Standard with ads and Standard support up to 1080p Full HD, while Premium supports 4K Ultra HD and HDR. Netflix’s former Basic plan has been discontinued. Do not assume that US plan names or features apply to your account elsewhere; check the plan details shown for your country and provider.

Upgrading the plan cannot make an incompatible browser, television, cable, or internet connection deliver 4K. It only raises the account-level limit.
3. The connection may be slow or unstable
Netflix adapts quality to the available connection so playback can continue. A slow or inconsistent connection can produce a lower-resolution picture. Netflix may also begin playback at a lower quality and increase it after the connection stabilizes, so the picture can improve after a short time.
Use Wi-Fi or a wired connection when possible. On a TV or streaming device, open Netflix and go to Get Help > Check your Network. On a phone or tablet, use My Netflix > menu > App Settings > Internet Speed Test. You can also open Fast.com in a browser. Test at the time and location where the problem occurs, because a connection can perform differently during busy periods.
4. Your browser may impose a resolution limit
Netflix’s listed browser maximums depend on the computer and operating system as well as the browser. Netflix currently lists:

- Windows: Edge 118 or later and Chrome 117 or later can reach up to Ultra HD when the computer meets Netflix’s Ultra HD requirements. Firefox and Opera are listed up to Full HD.
- Mac: Safari 14 or later can reach Ultra HD when the Mac qualifies. Chrome and Firefox are listed up to Full HD, while Edge and Opera are listed up to HD.
- Chromebook: Chrome can reach up to Ultra HD when the Chromebook meets Netflix’s requirements.
- Linux: Chrome, Firefox, and Edge are generally listed up to HD, while Opera is listed up to Full HD.
These are Netflix’s stated maximums, not a promise that every computer will achieve them. A browser can therefore be the limiting factor even when your subscription and television support 4K. Updating the browser and operating system is a sensible first step, but an update cannot remove a hardware or operating-system limitation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Getting 4K or HDR on a television
For 4K or HDR, every part of the signal path must support the target quality: the Netflix plan, title, television, streaming device, receiver, HDMI cable, HDMI port, and the relevant device settings. If one component does not qualify, Netflix plays at the highest quality available for that setup.
Check the following:
- The television or streaming device is listed as compatible with Netflix 4K or HDR.
- The Netflix app, TV software, streaming-device software, and receiver firmware are current.
- The device’s video-resolution setting is set to meet or exceed the desired output.
- The cable and HDMI port support the required signal.
- For 4K or HDR, the connected HDMI port supports HDCP 2.2 or later. On some televisions this is labeled on the port or is available only on a particular input, often HDMI 1.
For Premium-quality setups, Netflix specifies Premium High Speed HDMI or Ultra High Speed HDMI cables. If the cable is the diagnosed bottleneck, an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable may be relevant. It is not required merely to change Netflix’s playback setting, and replacing it cannot compensate for an unsupported plan, title, television, port, or network.
On supported HDR-capable TVs and TV streaming devices, HDR can also be controlled in Netflix. Choose a profile, open the Netflix menu, select Get Help, choose Video, and select HDR On or HDR Off. Some devices default to HDR Off. The exact menu can vary with the device and app version.

What to do when Netflix quality will not improve
- Check the title details: confirm that the title displays HD or 4K on the device you are using.
- Check the plan: confirm that your plan and billing provider include the target resolution.
- Check the profile: set Data usage per screen to High or Auto.
- Check mobile controls: on a phone or tablet, make sure Cellular Data Usage is not set to Save Data when you expect higher quality.
- Test the connection: use Netflix’s network test, the mobile app’s speed test, or Fast.com.
- Update the software: update Netflix, the browser, operating system, TV software, streaming-device software, and firmware.
- Inspect the HDMI chain: check the TV input, receiver, cable, and streaming-device output settings when troubleshooting 4K or HDR.
- Compare several titles: if only one title looks soft, its available quality may be the explanation. If every title is affected, the plan, device, network, or account setting is more likely.
If the problem continues across multiple titles after these checks, follow Netflix’s video-troubleshooting guidance or contact the device manufacturer. Older televisions and streaming devices may not support the current Netflix app; Netflix notes that the app may no longer be available on some devices made before 2015.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get better picture quality on Netflix?
Netflix normally adjusts quality automatically. Set Account > Profiles > your profile > Playback settings > Data usage per screen to High or Auto. High allows the best quality available for the title and device; Auto adapts to the connection.
Does setting Netflix to High force 4K?
No. High allows 4K only when your plan, title, device, browser or app, connection, and HDMI chain support 4K. A compatible Premium plan is also required in markets where 4K is limited to that tier.
How do I change Netflix quality on my phone?
Use My Netflix > profile name > App Settings > Cellular Data Usage. Select Wi-Fi Only, Automatic, Save Data, or Maximum Data. Maximum Data uses the most data and is intended for unlimited plans.
How do I increase the quality of Netflix downloads?
Change My Netflix > profile name > App Settings > Download Video Quality, then choose Standard or High/Higher. High-quality downloads use more storage and may reach up to 1080p when the device and title support HD.
Why is Netflix still blurry after I select High?
Check the title’s HD or 4K label, your plan, connection speed, browser or device limits, software updates, and the HDMI cable and port. On a TV or streaming device, Netflix provides Get Help > Check your Network.
The Bottom Line
To increase Netflix’s available streaming quality, use a browser to open Account > Profiles > your profile > Playback settings, then set Data usage per screen to High or Auto. On mobile, check My Netflix > profile name > App Settings > Cellular Data Usage. For downloads, change Download Video Quality separately. If the picture remains blurry, check the title label, plan, connection, browser or device limit, and—on a 4K TV—the complete HDMI chain.
