The film was offered as a premium digital purchase, including a 4K option, through Prime Video, Apple TV and other video-on-demand stores. Why was Longlegs called one of 2024’s scariest films?
“Scariest” was promotional and critical language, not an independently measurable ranking. The film’s marketing deliberately treated its central villain as a mystery. Early advertising often concealed Nicolas Cage’s appearance, used cryptic imagery, and built suspense around the investigation rather than explaining the plot.
Rank #3

- 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝘆, 𝗨𝘀𝗲𝗿-𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻: Features a reliable mechanism, anti-skip technology, and essential playback controls (fast-forward, zoom, A-B repeat) for a seamless viewing experience.
NEON also amplified early reactions describing Longlegs as one of the scariest or most disturbing films in years. The Los Angeles Times reported on the campaign’s use of that language and highlighted a promotional claim involving Maika Monroe’s recorded heartbeat during her first scene with Cage. That response helped turn the release into an event, but it should not be confused with a scientific measurement of fear or a universally agreed ranking.
The story itself follows FBI agent Lee Harker as she investigates an unresolved serial-killer case involving occult clues. Its horror comes less from a simple succession of jump scares than from dread, procedural mystery, disturbing imagery, and the gradual realization that the case may be connected to forces beyond an ordinary criminal investigation.

How successful was the film?
The digital-release announcement attracted unusual attention partly because Longlegs had become a significant theatrical success for an independent distributor. According to The Numbers, the film opened in the United States with approximately $22.4 million, reached about $74.3 million domestically, and earned approximately $51.1 million internationally, for a worldwide theatrical total of roughly $125.4 million.

Digital purchase, rental, streaming, or disc: which option makes sense?
- Choose a digital rental if you want to watch the film once without committing to a permanent purchase.
- Choose a digital purchase if you want convenient access across a supported account and do not need a physical disc.
- Choose subscription streaming if Longlegs is included in a service you already pay for. Do not assume that a Prime subscription includes an Amazon Video listing; rental, purchase, and subscription offers are separate and should be checked on the live page.
- Choose 4K UHD if you collect physical media, have a 4K player and display, or want a disc-based copy that is less dependent on a streaming catalog.
- Choose Blu-ray or DVD if you want a physical copy but do not need the 4K format. Picture, audio, and included features can differ between editions, so read the retailer’s specification list.
The bottom line
Longlegs hit U.S. digital platforms on August 23, 2024, following its July 12 theatrical opening. Its 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD editions arrived on September 24, 2024. It is now a released film rather than an upcoming title; for current viewing, check the relevant U.S. retailer or streaming listing because availability and pricing change by service and territory.
