The 2025 “Will Smith eating spaghetti” clip looks more coherent than the viral 2023 original, but its synchronized AI-generated chewing and squelching sounds are the part most likely to unsettle viewers. It was made with Google’s Veo 3—not filmed with Will Smith—and “newest” refers to the clip’s status in May 2025, not August 2026.
The version of the “Will Smith eating spaghetti” meme posted in May 2025 is much more convincing than the infamous original—but its audio may be the most unsettling part. The clip combines an AI-generated approximation of Will Smith with wet, exaggerated squelching, chewing, and mouth sounds that can be especially unpleasant for people with sound sensitivities or misophonia.
It is not footage of Smith eating. AI creator Javi Lopez posted the Veo 3-generated video on X on May 22, 2025, shortly after Google introduced Veo 3 with native audio. Futurism described it as the newest version of the viral “spaghetti test” at the time. That “newest” label is now historical: later systems, including ByteDance’s Seedance 2.0 in February 2026, produced newer examples.
What happens in the 2025 video?
The short clip depicts a recognizable approximation of Will Smith sitting down to eat spaghetti. The image is substantially more stable than the 2023 version that made the meme famous, but the eating sounds are conspicuous. Instead of a quiet, ordinary meal, the soundtrack emphasizes wet slurps, chewing, smacking, and other mouth noises.

That is why the clip can feel more disturbing than impressive. The visual errors that once made the meme funny have been reduced enough for the viewer to focus on whether the scene feels physically and socially believable. The audio answers that question in an uncomfortable way: it is synchronized with the action, but it is also exaggerated and often seems more like a collection of familiar “eating” sound effects than a natural recording of someone consuming pasta.
People with misophonia may find those sounds particularly distressing. It is more accurate to say that the clip may be unpleasant or triggering for some viewers than to claim that it medically harms people.
Who made it, and when?
AI creator Javi Lopez posted the clip on X on May 22, 2025, identifying the experiment as the “Will Smith spaghetti test” and telling viewers to turn the sound on. The video was made with Google DeepMind’s Veo 3, which Google had introduced at Google I/O two days earlier.
Veo 3 mattered because it was presented as a video model capable of generating native audio alongside moving images. Earlier AI-video demonstrations were often silent, accompanied by separately added music, or assembled from independently generated components. In this case, the model was asked to produce a scene in which the picture and the soundtrack belonged together.

Google later described Veo’s Flow filmmaking environment as capable of generating sound effects and background noise. Speech generation was still described as experimental, and availability could vary by country, account, subscription, and product version. The existence of a Veo 3 clip therefore does not mean every user can reproduce the same prompt or generate every real person’s likeness.
Why the original 2023 spaghetti video became famous
The meme began on March 23, 2023, when Reddit user u/chaindrop posted an AI-generated “Will Smith eating spaghetti” clip to the Stable Diffusion subreddit. Know Your Meme identifies ModelScope text-to-video as the tool used. The video was reposted to X by Magus Wazir on March 28, helping it reach a much wider audience.

That early clip became an accidental demonstration of the weaknesses of text-to-video systems. Smith’s face changed from moment to moment. Hands and arms warped. The pasta did not consistently behave like a solid, flexible food. Utensils, noodles, mouths, and fingers failed to maintain a stable relationship with one another.
In other words, the original was funny because the model could not maintain the basic physical logic of a person eating. The spaghetti stretched, vanished, multiplied, and appeared to pass through objects. The scene was recognizable as “someone eating spaghetti,” but it was not a coherent event.

Will Smith’s 2024 video was real—not another AI generation
There is an important middle chapter in the meme’s history. In February 2024, Will Smith posted a real comedic spaghetti-eating parody on his official social account. He was deliberately imitating the viral AI clip rather than appearing in a newly generated synthetic video.
That distinction is easy to lose when the clips are discussed together. The 2023 video was AI-generated, the 2024 parody was a live-action performance by Smith, and the 2025 Veo 3 version was an AI-generated depiction or approximation of him. They are three different objects.
Smith’s participation also showed how recognizable the original had become. A nonsensical AI failure had turned into a reference that the person whose likeness appeared in it could parody for the audience.
Why spaghetti is such a useful AI-video stress test
“Will Smith eating spaghetti” is not an official benchmark maintained by Google, ByteDance, or an academic evaluation group. It has no fixed prompt, scoring system, required camera angle, or agreed definition of success. It became a useful informal test because the scene compresses several difficult problems into a few seconds:

- Identity: The person must remain recognizable throughout the shot.
- Hands and utensils: Fingers, forks, plates, and arms must keep their shape and spatial relationships.
- Deformable food: Long noodles must move flexibly without melting, multiplying, or passing through other objects.
- Contact: The fork, spaghetti, lips, teeth, and mouth must interact plausibly.
- Continuity: The scene must preserve the same meal, table, lighting, and body position from frame to frame.
- Audio synchronization: Chewing, slurping, speech, room tone, and movement should match what the viewer sees.
Food is particularly revealing because viewers understand its ordinary behavior without consciously analyzing it. A noodle that bends incorrectly, a fork that changes shape, or a mouth that seems not to contact the food can expose a synthetic clip immediately.
The real advance in 2025 was synchronized audio
The Veo 3 version changed the experiment from “Can an AI model draw a person eating?” to “Can it generate a believable audiovisual event?” A video model now has to make the visible motion and the sound agree in timing and meaning.
That does not mean the model understood eating biologically. A more cautious explanation is that it generated a pattern associated with the prompt and with audiovisual examples in its training data. Ars Technica’s coverage suggested that the crunchy or emphatic sounds could reflect a mismatch in learned media patterns: dramatic crunch effects may be more common in media than realistic recordings of someone quietly eating soft spaghetti. That is an informed interpretation, not a confirmed explanation from Google of the clip’s internal generation process.
The result illustrates an important difference between correlation and physical understanding. The model can learn that mouths, food, chewing, and sound often appear together. It can produce a synchronized combination that looks and sounds intentional. But synchronization alone does not prove that it has a commonsense model of texture, pressure, saliva, acoustics, or human etiquette.
How to try AI video generation
Readers interested in the technology can investigate Google’s AI video tools, including Flow and Veo, through Google’s current product offerings. Treat any recreation as a separate experiment: access, pricing, regional availability, model versions, safety filters, and permitted depictions of real people can change. Do not assume that a public demonstration means the identical celebrity prompt will be available to every account.
Is it still the newest “Will Smith eating spaghetti” video?
No—not if “newest” refers to the latest example available by August 2026. The phrase belonged to Futurism’s May 22, 2025 headline and should be understood as a description of the story at that time.

Google later identified Veo 3.1 as its leading Veo model. On February 12, 2026, ByteDance officially launched Seedance 2.0, describing it as a unified multimodal audio-video model with reference inputs, editing capabilities, and multi-shot outputs of up to 15 seconds.
Forbes reported in February 2026 that a Seedance 2.0 spaghetti-test example appeared to avoid many of the obvious visual errors found in earlier clips. That is a notable development, but it should not be treated as a controlled scientific result. Viral AI videos are selected by their creators and audiences; incoherent generations are less likely to be posted, promoted, or reported on. A single impressive clip demonstrates what a system can produce under particular conditions, not what it produces on average.
The fairest comparison would control the prompt, reference image, generation length, model version, settings, access tier, editing, and selection process. Without those controls, the spaghetti test is best understood as a cultural yardstick and an easy-to-watch demonstration—not a formal leaderboard.

Because the clips use a recognizable approximation of Will Smith, they should be labeled clearly as synthetic depictions. They are not recordings of Smith participating in a production, and the 2025 clip should not be presented as evidence that he made or endorsed it.
AI-video services apply different rules to real-person likenesses and copyrighted material. Safety controls, regional restrictions, account requirements, and product policies are not uniform across providers and can change over time. A creator should check the current rules before attempting to generate a public figure, and should not use a synthetic clip to imply a person said or did something in real life.
The enduring joke of the spaghetti test is that each generation exposes a different boundary. In 2023, the boundary was basic visual coherence. In 2025, the images improved enough that the uncanny soundtrack became the central problem. Later systems may reduce those visible and audible errors, but a carefully selected demonstration is still not proof that generative video has solved physical reality, human likeness, or authenticity.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 2025 Will Smith spaghetti video real?
No. The 2025 clip was an AI-generated depiction or approximation of Will Smith made with Google DeepMind’s Veo 3. It was not footage of Smith eating spaghetti or participating in a production.
Why do the sounds make some people feel sick?
The clip may be unpleasant for people with misophonia or other sound sensitivities because it emphasizes wet chewing, slurping, smacking, and squelching sounds. It should not be described as medically harmful to viewers in general.
Is the Veo 3 clip still the newest spaghetti-test video?
No. The phrase “newest” described Futurism’s May 22, 2025 article. Google later identified Veo 3.1 as its leading Veo model, and ByteDance launched Seedance 2.0 in February 2026 with unified audio-video generation.
Did Will Smith make an AI version of the meme himself?
No. Smith’s February 2024 video was a real-life comedic parody of the AI meme. It should not be confused with the 2023 ModelScope-generated clip or the 2025 Veo 3 generation.

The 2025 Veo 3 spaghetti clip was historically important because it paired a more coherent AI-generated image with synchronized audio—not because it was literally the newest example forever or because it proved the model understood eating. Its exaggerated squelching and chewing sounds are a memorable reminder that realistic-looking video can still produce deeply unrealistic, and potentially unpleasant, sensory details.
