Older analog television
An older analog set cannot normally decode today’s digital over-the-air broadcasts by itself. The FCC identifies a digital TV converter box as the equipment needed to connect an antenna to an analog television. In that setup, the antenna connects to the converter box, and the converter box connects to the television according to its available video input.

What to do if ABC does not appear after scanning
- Confirm that you selected antenna or broadcast mode rather than cable mode in the TV’s channel setup.
- Check every cable connection, especially the coaxial connector at the television and antenna.
- Move an indoor antenna closer to a window or to a higher position, if practical, and scan again.
- Rescan after moving the antenna. The FCC notes that viewers may need to rescan if a station changes frequency.
- Check local ABC availability. An antenna cannot receive a station that does not serve the area or whose signal is blocked by local conditions.
- Consider an outdoor antenna if indoor reception is consistently unreliable and the installation is practical.
Could you stream the 2025 Oscars for free?
Hulu streamed the 2025 Oscars live, marking the first time Hulu carried the ceremony live. However, that was a streaming alternative, not the free over-the-air television method. ABC’s viewing guidance also referenced ABC.com and the ABC app, as well as live-TV services including Hulu + Live TV, YouTube TV, AT&T TV/DIRECTV STREAM, and FuboTV.
