Best Free Music Apps for iPhone and Android in 2026

Spotify Free is the best all-round choice for most iPhone and Android users in 2026, while YouTube Music, Pandora, SoundCloud, and iHeartRadio serve more specific listening styles. This U.S.-oriented guide compares their free-tier playback, ads, stations, podcasts, background play, offline limits, catalogs, and regional restrictions.

Short answer: Spotify Free is the best free music app for most iPhone and Android users in 2026. Choose YouTube Music for remixes, covers, live recordings, and music videos; Pandora for personalized radio; SoundCloud for independent and creator-uploaded music; and iHeartRadio for live stations and podcasts.

These recommendations compare usable free tiers, not temporary trials. Expect connected streaming, advertising or other limits, and different features by country, device, account, and rights holder.

At a glance

Rank App Best for What the free tier does well Main limitation
1 Spotify Free Most people Playlists, recommendations, podcasts, broad catalog, and cross-device support Premium is required for downloads, ad-free listening, and full playback control; free mobile controls can vary by market
2 YouTube Music Remixes, covers, live recordings, and music videos On-demand songs, videos, podcasts, queues, repeat, unlimited skips, Samples, and Music Tuner Background music playback, ad-free listening, and downloads require Premium
3 Pandora Personalized radio Artist, song, and genre stations with simple thumbs-up and thumbs-down feedback Free listening is station-first rather than an unrestricted on-demand catalog; iOS service is limited to U.S. listeners
4 SoundCloud Independent artists, bootlegs, remixes, and niche uploads A huge creator-uploaded catalog with music from independent artists and major labels Rights holders decide what is available; some tracks are restricted to 30-second previews without Go+
5 iHeartRadio Live radio, local stations, and podcasts Free access to thousands of radio stations, music, and podcasts in one app It is primarily a radio-and-audio service, not a fully customizable on-demand music library

What “free” means here

This list uses free to mean a usable tier that does not require a recurring paid membership—not a seven-day trial and not an app that only plays music you already own. In practice, free music apps generally mean connected streaming with advertising, playback limits, catalog restrictions, or some combination of the three.

None of these services should be treated as a permanent free offline music locker. Spotify identifies music downloads as a Premium feature, YouTube Music lists music downloads and background music playback among its Premium benefits, and Pandora reserves offline listening for paid tiers. SoundCloud Go+ also adds offline listening, while the cited iHeartRadio description does not establish a free offline-download feature. If you need music on a flight, in a dead-signal area, or on a long road trip, check the paid plan and download rules before relying on any app.

#1 Best Overall
JBL Vibe Beam - True Wireless Earbuds - Black
  • JBL Deep Bass Sound: Get the most from your mixes with high-quality audio from secure, reliable earbuds with 8mm drivers featuring JBL Deep Bass Sound
  • Comfortable fit: The ergonomic, stick-closed design of the JBL Vibe Beam fits so comfortably you may forget you're wearing them. The closed design excludes external sounds, enhancing the bass performance
  • Up to 32 (8h + 24h) hours of battery life and speed charging: With 8 hours of battery life in the earbuds and 24 in the case, the JBL Vibe Beam provide all-day audio. When you need more power, you can speed charge an extra two hours in just 10 minutes.
  • Hands-free calls with VoiceAware: When you're making hands-free stereo calls on the go, VoiceAware lets you balance how much of your own voice you hear while talking with others
  • Water and dust resistant: From the beach to the bike trail, the IP54-certified earbuds and IPX2 charging case are water and dust resistant for all-day experiences

The comparison is primarily U.S.-oriented. Country, rights-holder agreements, account type, operating system, and staged feature rollouts can all change what appears in the app. Pandora is the clearest geographic exception: its official iOS help documentation limits the service to listeners in the United States.

1. Spotify Free: best overall

Choose Spotify if you want one broadly capable app for playlists, discovery, podcasts, and everyday listening. It is the safest starting point for most iPhone and Android users because its free mobile experience combines a large catalog, playlist creation, personalized recommendations, and cross-device support. Spotify’s official listings identify the app as free on both iPhone/iPad and Android mobile and tablet devices.

Spotify is particularly strong when you do not want to decide what to play next. Its recommendations and personalized playlists make it easy to move from familiar music to new artists. The app also combines music and podcasts, so you do not need a second service for spoken-word listening.

Spotify’s current free-experience materials describe Pick & Play and Search & Play features. Those labels should not be read as a guarantee that every free user in every country gets identical playback controls: availability and rollout can vary by market. The practical question is whether your account lets you start the particular song or playlist you want and how much control it gives you afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Spotify Free limitations

  • No free offline music downloads: downloading music for offline listening is a Premium feature.
  • Ads remain part of the free experience: Premium adds ad-free music.
  • Mobile controls can differ: do not promise unlimited song selection, uninterrupted background playback, or full queue control without checking the current behavior in your country.
  • Premium is more than ad removal: Spotify lists offline music and full playback control among the paid benefits.

Spotify’s Data Saver option is useful if you stream over a limited mobile-data plan. It does not make the service offline; it is a setting for reducing data use while connected.

2. YouTube Music: best for remixes, covers, and live recordings

Choose YouTube Music if your searches often end with a cover, remix, concert performance, DJ set, music video, or hard-to-find alternate version. YouTube Music is more than a conventional audio catalog. Google highlights official music videos, full albums, remixes, covers, concert footage, live recordings, and user-generated song content—exactly the material that can be missing or difficult to find in a standard streaming library.

Its free, ad-supported version has unusually capable playback controls according to Google’s official help documentation. Free users can use on-demand playback for podcasts, songs, and music videos, as well as queuing, repeat, and unlimited skipping. Discovery features such as Samples and Music Tuner give you additional ways to find something without manually searching through albums.

Apple AirPods Pro 3 Wireless Earbuds with Active Noise Cancellation
  • WORLD’S BEST IN-EAR ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — Removes up to 2x more unwanted noise than AirPods Pro 2* so you can stay fully immersed in the moment.*
  • BREAKTHROUGH AUDIO PERFORMANCE — Experience breathtaking, three-dimensional audio with AirPods Pro 3. A new acoustic architecture delivers transformed bass, detailed clarity so you can hear every instrument, and stunningly vivid vocals.
  • HEART RATE SENSING — Built-in heart rate sensing lets you track your heart rate and calories burned for up to 50 different workout types.* With iPhone, you will have access to the Move ring, step count, and the new Workout Buddy,* powered by Apple Intelligence.*
  • LIVE TRANSLATION — Communicate across language barriers using Live Translation,* enabled by Apple Intelligence.*
  • EXTENDED BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 8 hours of listening time with Active Noise Cancellation on a single charge. Or up to 10 hours in Transparency using the Hearing Aid feature.*

This makes YouTube Music the strongest choice for listeners who care about versions as much as songs. A search for a track may lead to the studio recording, an acoustic performance, a fan-made cover, a live set, or a video from the artist’s channel. That breadth is also the reason results can feel less uniform than in a traditional audio-only service.

YouTube Music free-tier limitations

  • Background music playback is a Premium benefit: free music may not continue when you lock your phone, switch apps, or turn off the screen.
  • Ad-free music is paid: the free tier is ad-supported.
  • Music downloads are paid: Premium is required for offline music downloads.
  • Podcast rules are different: Google documents podcast features separately from music, so do not assume that a rule applying to music also applies to every podcast.
  • Regional variation matters: Google says features can vary by country or region.

If your priority is listening with the screen off, YouTube Music Free is not the right choice unless your local app behavior specifically supports what you need. If your priority is finding a particular live or alternate performance, it is often the better choice than a conventional streaming app.

3. Pandora: best for personalized radio

Choose Pandora if you would rather start a station than build a precise queue. Pandora’s free tier is built around stations based on an artist, song, or genre. You provide feedback with thumbs-up and thumbs-down controls, and Pandora’s recommendation system chooses much of what plays next.

That station-based design is its advantage and its defining limitation. Pandora works well for cooking, working, driving, or relaxing when you want a particular mood without repeatedly choosing individual songs. It is less suitable when you expect to select any song, album, or playlist at any time with no additional step.

Pandora also offers podcasts. Its subscription documentation says free listening can sometimes unlock temporary Premium access after an advertisement. Pandora’s iOS help documentation further says free and Pandora Plus listeners may need to watch a short advertisement before playing on-demand songs, albums, or playlists. That is best understood as an ad-supported unlock—not as permanent free access to an unrestricted on-demand catalog.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pandora free-tier limitations and requirements

  • Station-first listening: free Pandora is not equivalent to unrestricted on-demand playback.
  • Ad unlocks may be required: on-demand access can involve watching a short advertisement.
  • No free offline mode: offline listening is reserved for Pandora Plus, Pandora Premium, or Pandora Premium Family subscribers.
  • U.S. limitation on iOS: Pandora’s official iOS help page says the service is available only to listeners in the United States.
  • Current minimum operating-system requirements: Pandora lists iOS 15 or later and Android 7.0 or later.

Pandora is a better free choice than Spotify for someone who specifically wants radio-style listening. Spotify is the better general-purpose choice for someone who wants playlists, search, podcasts, and broader control.

4. SoundCloud: best for independent artists and hard-to-find uploads

Choose SoundCloud if discovery matters more than a perfectly consistent mainstream catalog. SoundCloud’s catalog includes tens of millions of tracks, with material from independent creators as well as major labels. It is a particularly useful place to look for emerging artists, bootlegs, remixes, DJ material, niche genres, and creator-uploaded recordings.

Soundcore by Anker P20i True Wireless Earbuds, with Big Bass, 30H Playtime
  • Powerful Bass: soundcore P20i true wireless earbuds have oversized 10mm drivers that deliver powerful sound with boosted bass so you can lose yourself in your favorite songs.
  • Personalized Listening Experience: Use the soundcore app to customize the controls and choose from 22 EQ presets. With "Find My Earbuds", a lost earbud can emit noise to help you locate it.
  • Long Playtime, Fast Charging: Get 10 hours of battery life on a single charge with a case that extends it to 30 hours. If P20i true wireless earbuds are low on power, a quick 10-minute charge will give you 2 hours of playtime.
  • Portable On-the-Go Design: soundcore P20i true wireless earbuds and the charging case are compact and lightweight with a lanyard attached. It's small enough to slip in your pocket, or clip on your bag or keys–so you never worry about space.
  • AI-Enhanced Clear Calls: 2 built-in mics and an AI algorithm work together to pick up your voice so that you never have to shout over the phone.

The catalog is fundamentally different from a standard fully licensed music service. Each rights holder can determine how a recording is made available. As a result, one track may play in full for free while another recording by the same artist—or an alternate version of the same song—may be restricted.

SoundCloud free-tier limitations

  • Not every track is fully free: SoundCloud says some rights-holder-controlled tracks may be limited to 30-second previews without Go+.
  • Availability is inconsistent by design: rights-holder settings, rather than one universal free-catalog rule, determine access.
  • Go+ adds important features: the paid tier provides the full form of the catalog, offline listening, and ad-free streaming.

SoundCloud should be your first stop when you remember a mix, unofficial version, local artist, or creator upload but cannot find it in Spotify or YouTube Music. It should not be your only app if you need reliable access to every mainstream album or a consistent offline experience.

5. iHeartRadio: best for live radio, local stations, and podcasts

Choose iHeartRadio if “music app” means live radio to you. iHeartRadio’s official help page describes the service as free and says it offers unlimited music, thousands of radio stations, and podcasts in one app. The service is available through both the iOS App Store and Google Play.

Its strongest use case is broadcast-style listening: local or terrestrial-radio-style stations, genre stations, live programming, and podcasts. It is a good fit if you want to press play on a station and hear a programmed stream rather than manage a personal library of individual songs.

iHeartRadio free-tier limitations

Do not position iHeartRadio as a direct replacement for an unrestricted on-demand music catalog. The official free-service description emphasizes stations, music, and podcasts; it does not establish the same level of song-by-song control described for YouTube Music’s free tier. If choosing a specific track whenever you want is essential, start with Spotify or YouTube Music instead.

Which free music app should you choose?

Your priority Best choice Why
I want one app that does most things well Spotify Free It offers the broadest combination of music, playlists, recommendations, podcasts, and mobile support.
I want alternate versions, music videos, covers, and live sets YouTube Music Its content mix extends beyond conventional audio albums and includes official and user-uploaded material.
I want to start a station and stop managing playback Pandora Artist, song, and genre stations are central to its free experience.
I want independent artists, bootlegs, or niche uploads SoundCloud Its creator-uploaded catalog offers a different depth of discovery, although rights restrictions are common.
I want live radio, local stations, and podcasts iHeartRadio Its free offering is organized around radio stations, music, and spoken-word programming.

Check these four things before choosing

1. Do you need true on-demand playback?

“Free music” does not describe one standard experience. YouTube Music’s official documentation explicitly describes free on-demand playback for songs, podcasts, and music videos. Pandora’s free tier is station-centered, although an advertisement may unlock on-demand listening temporarily. Spotify’s free controls, including Pick & Play and Search & Play, can vary by market. SoundCloud depends on the rights status of each recording, and iHeartRadio is primarily station-based.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you need to select a specific album or track repeatedly, test that exact behavior with the free account before committing to an app.

2. Will you listen with the screen locked?

This is one of the most important differences between free and paid tiers. YouTube Music explicitly lists background music playback as a Premium benefit. Spotify’s free mobile behavior can vary, so it is unwise to promise uninterrupted background listening universally. The dossier does not establish a single background-play rule for Pandora, SoundCloud, or iHeartRadio; test the app on your phone rather than assuming that an iPhone feature works identically on Android.

3. Do you need offline listening?

If the answer is yes, the free tiers are generally the wrong tool. Spotify, YouTube Music, and Pandora explicitly reserve music downloads or offline listening for paid plans. SoundCloud Go+ adds offline listening. Free streaming should be treated as connected listening unless the service clearly says otherwise for your account and region.

4. Does your catalog depend on rights or location?

A song, podcast, video, or station can be available on one service and missing on another. YouTube Music features vary by country or region, SoundCloud availability depends on rights-holder settings, and Pandora’s iOS service is U.S.-only. Before recommending an app to someone in another country, verify the local app listing and help documentation.

A practical way to test the apps

You do not need to install all five permanently. Use the same short test on the two or three apps that match your listening style:

  1. Search for one mainstream song. Check whether the result is the official recording, a video, a cover, or a preview.
  2. Search for an unusual version. Try a live performance, remix, independent artist, or DJ set. This quickly shows whether YouTube Music or SoundCloud is a better fit for you.
  3. Start a station. Pandora and iHeartRadio are designed around this style; compare how quickly each gets to music you actually want.
  4. Lock the phone and switch apps. See whether playback continues. Do not infer background-play support from another service or another device.
  5. Check mobile-data settings. Spotify’s Data Saver option can help reduce data use. For other apps, review the app’s current cellular-data settings before streaming for hours.
  6. Test your normal listening location. Try the app in your car, on a commute, or at home, depending on where you listen. A service that works well on Wi-Fi may be inconvenient when your connection is weak.
  7. Verify the operating system and region. Pandora currently requires iOS 15 or later or Android 7.0 or later, and feature availability elsewhere can change by country.

One useful accessory for phone-based listening

Disclosure: The apps above work with ordinary phone speakers and Bluetooth audio devices; no particular model is required or implied to have been tested. If you listen while commuting, traveling, exercising, or sharing a room with other people, wireless earbuds for listening on your phone are the most direct accessory to consider. Prioritize a comfortable fit, physical or reliable touch controls, battery life, and an awareness mode if you need to hear your surroundings. The earbuds will not remove app ads, enable offline downloads, or unlock Premium features.

Final recommendation

Start with Spotify Free if you want the best all-round balance of catalog, playlists, discovery, podcasts, and device support. Install YouTube Music instead—or alongside it—if your listening depends on remixes, covers, live recordings, and music videos. Pick Pandora for hands-off personalized radio, SoundCloud for creator-uploaded and hard-to-find music, and iHeartRadio for live stations and podcasts.

Whichever app you choose, treat the free tier as connected streaming with changing limits. Confirm your country, device, account type, background-play behavior, and exact catalog before assuming that an iPhone and Android phone will offer identical features.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best free music app overall?

For most people, Spotify Free is the best starting point because it combines a broad catalog, playlists, personalized recommendations, podcasts, and support across iPhone and Android. Choose YouTube Music instead if remixes, covers, live recordings, and music videos are more important than a conventional audio catalog.

Can I listen to music offline for free?

Usually not. Spotify, YouTube Music, and Pandora explicitly reserve music downloads or offline listening for paid plans. SoundCloud Go+ adds offline listening, and the cited iHeartRadio information does not establish a free offline-download feature. Free apps should generally be treated as connected streaming.

Which free music apps play with the screen locked?

YouTube Music’s free music service does not include background music playback; Google lists it as a Premium benefit. Spotify’s free mobile behavior can vary by market. The available research does not establish one universal background-play rule for Pandora, SoundCloud, or iHeartRadio, so test the app on your specific phone.

Is Pandora available outside the United States?

Pandora’s official iOS help documentation says its iOS service is available only to listeners in the United States. Other apps also have country-specific catalogs and features, so availability should be checked for the listener’s country rather than assumed from the U.S. version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is SoundCloud better than Spotify for independent music?

SoundCloud is the better choice for independent artists, bootlegs, remixes, DJ material, niche genres, and creator uploads. However, rights holders decide how recordings are offered, so some tracks may be limited to 30-second previews without Go+.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Spotify Free is the best default choice for most listeners. YouTube Music wins for remixes, covers, live performances, and video-linked discovery; Pandora is better for station-based listening; SoundCloud for independent and hard-to-find uploads; and iHeartRadio for live radio and podcasts. Free does not normally mean ad-free, fully controllable, or downloadable offline listening.
