Why Ram’s 2025 Super Bowl Ad Was One of the Funniest Commercials of the Year

Ram’s “Goldilocks and the Three Trucks” turns a bedtime story into a dragon-fighting, volcano-jumping truck fantasy. Here’s why the Glen Powell commercial worked—and what the audience data says about its humor and impact.

Ram’s 2025 Super Bowl commercial has a legitimate claim to being one of the year’s funniest ads: it turns Goldilocks and the Three Bears into a truck-action movie involving dragons, giant smokers, chainsaws, and active volcanoes.

Ram’s 2025 Super Bowl commercial has a legitimate claim to being one of the year’s funniest ads—not because it tells a particularly clever joke, but because it turns a familiar bedtime story into an increasingly ridiculous truck-action movie.

Officially titled Drive Your Own Story, the campaign’s extended online version is called Goldilocks and the Three Trucks. The 60-second broadcast spot, released for Super Bowl LIX on February 9, 2025, casts Glen Powell as an adult, action-hero version of Goldilocks. A 90-second extended cut was also released online.

Powell’s character does not choose between three bowls of porridge or three beds. He chooses among three Ram trucks, then uses them for increasingly absurd challenges: chainsaw carving, dragon combat, towing a cooked dragon, and jumping across active volcanoes. The joke is the gap between the calm logic of a children’s story and the wildly overbuilt world of a modern truck commercial.

What happens in Ram’s “Goldilocks and the Three Trucks” ad?

The commercial begins with Powell as “Uncle Glen,” telling a bedtime story to his real-life twin niece and nephew. That framing device gives the ad an immediately recognizable setup—and makes the later spectacle funnier. The children expect Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Instead, their uncle launches into a story about choosing the right Ram truck for a series of impossible adventures.

The three vehicles become the commercial’s version of Goldilocks’ three choices:

  • Ram 1500 Ramcharger: Presented as an electrified choice that combines electric drive with an internal-combustion engine. It appears in the chainsaw-carving sequence and is associated with the dragon adventure as the story escalates.
  • Ram 2500 Rebel: The heavy-duty option, used for the dragon-related sequence, including towing and the giant-smoker gag. Its role communicates strength and towing capability.
  • Ram 1500 RHO: The high-performance off-road choice, used for the spectacular jumps across active volcanoes. Its role emphasizes speed, suspension performance, and adventure.

The ad is not presenting these stunts as normal truck use cases. They are deliberately cartoonish advertising imagery. A truck does not need to tow a dragon or leap over a volcano for the joke to work; the impossible situations simply turn each vehicle’s intended positioning into a visual punch line.

Why the commercial is so funny

It subverts a story everyone already knows

Most viewers do not need an explanation of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The commercial can therefore abandon the original story almost immediately. The audience recognizes the setup, understands that three choices are coming, and waits to see how Ram will replace the familiar fairy-tale objects.

That shortcut gives the ad more room for escalation. It does not spend its runtime establishing a complicated fictional world. It takes an old story and swaps beds, porridge, and a cottage for trucks, dragons, volcanoes, and an enormous smoker.

The hero is comically wrong for the source material

Glen Powell is not playing Goldilocks as a curious child. He is an adult man with the presence of an action-film protagonist. The contrast is funny before the first truck even appears: this is a rugged, cinematic hero behaving as though a children’s bedtime story is an appropriate setting for a major stunt sequence.

Powell’s casting also creates a second layer to the performance. Inside the story, he is an exaggerated adventurer. Outside it, he is “Uncle Glen,” apparently embellishing a familiar tale far beyond what the children expected. The final return to the bedroom restores the original premise and makes the fantasy feel like an uncle’s wildly overcommitted version of story time.

Every scene raises the stakes

The escalation is the commercial’s central comic engine. Chainsaw carving is already a conspicuously excessive way to demonstrate a truck. Then the ad introduces a fire-breathing dragon. Then it adds towing and cooking the dragon in a giant smoker. Finally, the RHO is sent across active volcanoes.

Each new image makes the previous one seem almost reasonable. That is a classic action-comedy rhythm: establish an impressive level of spectacle, then immediately treat it as insufficient. The commercial keeps asking what the next “just right” truck challenge could possibly be, and the answer is always more ridiculous than the last.

The product demonstration becomes the punch line

Instead of listing specifications or having a narrator recite capability claims, Ram turns product segmentation into the story’s joke. The Ramcharger, Rebel, and RHO are not presented as one truck being universally right for everyone. Each is matched with a different kind of fantasy.

That supports Ram’s “power of choice” message. The underlying sales idea is straightforward: buyers have different needs and preferences, so they should choose the truck that fits their own story. The fairy-tale structure makes that positioning easier to remember. One truck is not simply too large or too small; the right choice depends on whether the adventure involves electrification, heavy-duty work, or extreme off-road performance.

David Leitch gives the ad an action-movie shape

The commercial was directed by David Leitch, whose credits include Deadpool 2, John Wick, and Bullet Train. That background helps explain why the spot feels more like a compressed action sequence than a standard automotive commercial.

Leitch’s involvement is not just a decorative credit. The ad depends on rapid escalation, oversized set pieces, controlled chaos, and visual exaggeration. Its humor is carried as much by editing, scale, character performance, and surprise as by spoken lines. The result resembles a trailer for an action-comedy that happens to be organized around three trucks.

The soundtrack: Van Halen’s “Panama”

The commercial uses Van Halen’s “Panama,” from the band’s 1984 album. The hard-rock track fits the spot’s loud, muscular tone and helps turn the fairy-tale parody into an action spectacle.

“Panama” is a particularly effective choice because it immediately signals speed, swagger, and excess. The song does not make the commercial funny by itself, but it gives the truck sequences the energy of a theatrical action trailer. The safest description is simply that Ram’s ad is soundtracked by Van Halen’s “Panama.” There is no need to claim that the commercial revived the song commercially without separate chart or streaming evidence.

Did viewers and advertisers respond to it?

The “funniest commercial” label is ultimately an editorial judgment, not a verified award. Still, available post-game measurement gives the claim more support than personal enthusiasm alone.

WardsAuto, citing iSpot’s assessment, reported that the Ram and Jeep 2025 Super Bowl ads each achieved 85% brand recognition. The same report gave Ram 48% positive purchase intent. iSpot also reportedly found the Ram spot 13% more likable than the norm, with viewers responding to its visual scenes and characters and describing reactions including “curiosity” and “funny.”

Marketing Brew reported that EDO gave the Ram commercial an 848 engagement score, placing it second in EDO’s Super Bowl LIX ranking. EDO’s index reflects online engagement, such as searches or visits after an advertisement, rather than a direct vote for the funniest commercial.

Those distinctions matter:

  • Brand recognition indicates whether viewers identified the advertiser.
  • Positive purchase intent reflects surveyed increases in stated interest in purchasing or visiting the brand.
  • EDO engagement measures online activity associated with the ad.
  • Likeability and “funny” reactions provide evidence of audience response, but do not establish universal agreement.

None of these figures proves that the ad caused vehicle sales or that it was objectively the funniest spot in the entire game. Together, however, they support a narrower and more defensible conclusion: the commercial was memorable, likable, visually distinctive, and commercially salient.

Ram’s merchandise extended the joke beyond the commercial

Ram’s February 6, 2025 campaign announcement also promoted merchandise connected to the ad. The announced lineup included stuffed dragons, stuffed bears, T-shirts, hoodies, blankets, and dragon-wing hot sauce. The launch announcement said the products would be available through RamTrucks.com beginning February 6.

That is launch information, not proof of current availability. Merchandise inventories, product pages, and promotional programs can change, so readers should check Ram’s live site before assuming that a particular item remains in stock. The most natural products are the ones that preserve the commercial’s central visual joke—especially the plush dragons and bears—rather than ordinary truck accessories.

For readers looking for official Ram Super Bowl merchandise, the brand’s current store or campaign pages are the appropriate place to verify availability. The merchandise should not be confused with official vehicle equipment, and the original campaign announcement does not establish that a current affiliate or referral program exists.

Is the commercial really the funniest of 2025?

There is no objective answer, but Ram’s ad has a stronger case than a merely amusing celebrity commercial. Its humor is built into the structure rather than added as a final punch line.

The ad starts with a universally familiar narrative, casts an adult action star in the wrong role, uses vehicle capabilities as story mechanics, and increases the spectacle until the premise becomes gloriously unreasonable. The final return to Uncle Glen and the children prevents the action from feeling like an unrelated truck demonstration. It reminds viewers that the entire adventure was a bedtime-story embellishment.

Its main weakness is also part of its design: viewers who dislike loud automotive spectacle or conventional brand positioning may find the humor overproduced. The commercial is not subtle. It wants the dragon, the smoker, the volcanoes, the rock song, and the cinematic heroics to arrive at full volume.

For the audience that enjoys that collision of fairy tale and blockbuster action, however, the excess is the point. Ram did not make Goldilocks more realistic. It made her—or rather, Uncle Glen’s version of her—choose a truck for every increasingly impossible adventure.

Verdict

Ram’s 2025 Super Bowl ad earns its “one of the funniest” reputation through escalation and contrast. It takes a quiet children’s story and fills it with trucks, dragons, volcanoes, hard rock, and an adult action hero who appears to have misunderstood the assignment. The reported audience metrics reinforce what the commercial’s construction already suggests: it was unusually easy to remember, visually engaging, and likable.

It may not be possible to prove that it was the single funniest commercial of 2025. But as a piece of advertising comedy, Goldilocks and the Three Trucks gets the important thing right: every truck is “just right” for a challenge that should never have appeared in a bedtime story in the first place.
