If Apple Music is blending the end of one song into the beginning of the next, turn off Song Transitions.

  • Mac: In the Music app, choose Music > Settings > Playback, then turn off Song Transitions.

What to turn off: Song Transitions, AutoMix, or Crossfade?

Apple Music now uses Song Transitions as the main setting on supported Apple devices. That setting controls two different transition styles:

  • AutoMix dynamically chooses a transition for eligible songs in the Apple Music catalog.
  • Crossfade uses a set duration: the current song fades out while the next song fades in.

Changing AutoMix to Crossfade does not disable transitions. If you want songs to stop blending altogether, turn off Song Transitions rather than simply selecting a different transition style.

Turn off transitions on iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap Music.
  4. Tap Song Transitions.
  5. Switch Song Transitions off.

Apple uses this same settings path on iPhone, iPad, and Apple Vision Pro. With the setting off, neither AutoMix nor Crossfade should remain selected as the active transition style.

Turn off transitions on Mac

  1. Open the Music app.
  2. In the menu bar, choose Music > Settings.
  3. Click Playback.
  4. Turn off Song Transitions.

On Macs with Apple silicon, the Playback settings may also include AutoMix. AutoMix is not available on Intel-based Macs, but the Song Transitions control is still the setting to check when you want to prevent songs from fading or blending.

Check HDMI Passthrough if songs still do not fade

If your Mac is connected to an audio receiver, the Prefer HDMI Passthrough option can affect fading. When it is selected, songs no longer fade in or out according to Apple’s Mac playback documentation. If you are trying to restore ordinary transition behavior rather than disable it, check this option in Music > Settings > Playback.

Turn off crossfade in Apple Music for Windows

Apple Music for Windows uses different wording and a different menu path. It calls the relevant control Crossfade songs rather than Song Transitions.

  1. Open the Apple Music app.
  2. Select the Sidebar Actions button at the top of the sidebar.
  3. Choose Settings.
  4. Select Playback.
  5. Turn off Crossfade songs.

This disables the effect that fades one song out while the next song fades in. Apple also notes that crossfading is automatically disabled when consecutive tracks from the same album are played, so the effect may not appear consistently even when the Windows setting is enabled.

Why AutoMix does not blend every pair of songs

AutoMix is not simply a permanent crossfade. It evaluates whether a dynamic transition is appropriate, so its behavior can vary from track to track. Apple identifies several situations in which AutoMix may not create a transition:

That is why AutoMix can appear to work for one playlist but pause normally between other tracks. If your preference is always to hear a clear separation between songs, do not rely on AutoMix to make that decision—turn off Song Transitions on Apple devices or Crossfade songs on Windows.

Availability and platform differences

Apple describes AutoMix as a feature for eligible Apple Music catalog content and associates its availability with an Apple Music subscription. Availability also varies by platform. Apple’s documentation lists limitations for Intel-based Mac computers, Apple TV, Apple Watch, HomePod, Android, and Apple Music for Windows. Windows does have its own Crossfade songs setting even though AutoMix is not available there in the same way.

These controls can change as Apple updates its apps and operating systems. Use the current labels—Song Transitions, AutoMix, and Crossfade songs—rather than looking only for an older, generic “Crossfade” switch.

  • Using a Mac? Make sure you changed the setting in the Music app under Music > Settings > Playback, not in a different audio app.
  • Using Windows? Look for Crossfade songs under Sidebar Actions > Settings > Playback.
  • Does the behavior vary by album? Sequential album playback and certain purchased, downloaded, or uploaded tracks may not use AutoMix in the first place.
  • Connected to an audio receiver on Mac? Check whether Prefer HDMI Passthrough is affecting fades.

Do you need new hardware or an accessory?

No. Turning off Apple Music song transitions is a software setting on the device or computer running Apple Music. You do not need new headphones, speakers, an iPhone, a Mac, or a physical manual to change it.
